Thanks for this! I kept getting an ER-1 error with a new pitboss and had to return 3-4 smokers to the store because no one could tell me what the problem was. Finally, the customer service people sent me a temp probe and I can install it. This video is extremely helpful. Even their customer service pointed me to your video lol.
Wow! Your video is way more helpful than the official Pit Boss video they have posted. My RTD temp probe is bad and is needing to be replaced. They said they are sending me email instructions with the part by snail mail, but your video makes the whole thing so very much more understandable. I can do this! Thank you!
Well I'm glad I could help! That's actually the reason I made the video, they sent the parts with no instructions. I'm glad I could help you and I hope your smoker gets back up and running in no time. Thanks for the comment!
Sweet deal mine is having temp spikes and i need to clean mine instruction book didnt even show where it was located i bought it of someone so this was very helpful
Thank You so much you really saved the day! Didn't even know we had an internal probe and kept getting ERH code while smoking. Tried cleaning the probe after watching your video and now its working like a charm!
Great video! I had trouble with my series 5 spiking in temps of 100+ degrees. Pit Boss sent me the control panel and probe. I replaced them both at the same time, so I’m not sure if it was one or both things giving me the problem. However, I did notice that the wire on the new probe was slightly longer. I smoked a pork ribs after the fix and this baby cooked like a dream. Keep the videos coming!
I had the same experience, they sent me both parts and afterwards it worked great. I'm glad it was still under warranty so I didnt have to pay for the parts
Thank you for making this video!!! I have already taken the unit apart to replace the control board. Knowing that I have to do this again is frustrating to say the least. Your detailed instructions made this simple for me to do on my own. Women watching this, you can do this. Do use a piece of wire or a strong string to help you guide this through makes this easy. My question on this video is ... do you have to remove anything from the back of the unit to remove the original probe wire? When you push it through the back of the unit, where does it go and how do you disconnect it? Then reconnect the pin and send it back through the unit? After watching two videos on the same procedure, I'll try this one first and if that doesn't make sense, I'll turn the unit over and follow instructions from the first video I watched. I'm hoping this one works without all the hassle. I'll post a reply when I get this done (8-4-21). Good luck ya'll.
I'm glad I could help, this is probably the easiest way to do it in my opinion, but it may be easier to try a different method of some. Either way I hop this video helps! Thank you for the comment!
I wish I had watched this earlier. I just finished disassembling and replacing the guts of my Pitt Boss Copperhead. The control panel, the heat element, and probes. After I was finished I noticed and extra part in the new box of guts. Hmmm? What's this? It was the thermostat. It would have been so much easier to replace when I had the smoker on it's side and dissembled. I am hoping the old one will still work after polishing it up because there ain't no way this 73 year old weakling woman is going to do that job again lol.
I hope yours never has the issue, they ended up sending me 2 parts to replace because they weren't sure which it was. This video shows the temp probe, and I made another video replacing the controls panel.
@@BuildStuffwithAJ So far my vertical Pit Boss has not had any problems. I did have to replace the RTD probe on my Pit Boss pellet grill but it was much easier than replacing the one that you did on the vertical.
Heu mate, im having problems in my series 3, too. It looked like it had water running through the probe cabe and rusted the connections. The probe works but doesnt read the temperature properly. What was the problem with your probe?
im not sure the exact problem with the probe, but it wouldn't keep the correct temp. The company sent me both the probe and the control board because they didnt know which one was actually causing the problem
@Build Stuff With AJ how do you know when your heat sensor is not working correctly? I have the Lexington smoker/grill. I've felt like the grill is not heating up (enough) properly. 25° to 50° makes a big difference in these smokers. So I thought maybe mine is not working correctly
Well to be honest it's been over a year since I've had the problem so I'm not sure I'd remember what the guy on the phone told me lol. But I ended up replacing both my rtd temp probe and the control board. It would heat up a couple hundred degrees higher than I had it set and then it would shut down and show the ERL code. The guy on the phone said it could be either one so he sent me both.
Ok so on mine the probe connector on the end is to big to fit through the hole and it doesn't have any additional screws to undo or room to do anything else can u make a suggestion on how to get it in..
The guy makes it look easy What he don't tell you is those two little screws that hold the probe in if they've been in for a while they could be rusted or stubborn and there are tiny it could make for a job.
your right, mine didn't have too much rust on them making the job fairly easy, but if you've had it for several years I could see it being pretty difficult.
To be honest, I called the pit boss help line and they told me it was either the temp probe or the control unit, They sent me both since it was still under warranty, but they arrived about a week apart so I ended up making two different videos for it. So moral of the story is, be prepared to buy both because apparently they don't even know how to tell which on is the problem lol
That's funny, because I had replaced the main control unit already, so they sent me the temp probe, and that ended up being the fix. Mine was years out of warranty as well BTW. So props to Pit Boss for still taking care of me.
I replaced both the rtd probe and the controls unit. My pit boss was over heating. I'd set it for 300 and it would reach upwards of 500 before shutting off its self off
@@michaelnance5236 it did for me, when I called the help line they sent me both so I figured I'd try one at a time. The control panel didn't help my issue but the rtd probe did.

Not that I know of, you would have to extend all the wires for it to reach. And I'm not sure it would be beneficial, heat rises so it would get more heat that before. And it wouldn't be protected from the weather on top like that unless you built a housing for it. About the only advantage, other than not having to bend over lol, would be avoiding drippings. But honestly they wipe right off if you clean it after every use.
I highly recommend not buying the pit password or smoker mine went out ignition starter went out in less than two years maybe using it five times more than that
Wow, that's crappy! I've had a few issues out of mine, after owning the smoker, id prefer the grill style pellet smoker. My dad has had his for 6 years or more and hasn't had a single issue
I know that this is an old video but I just replaced my probe according to your suggestion and it worked flawlessly. Thank you
Glad it helped!
