@wut If you want to experiment the serie as a whole , i recomend 1st to play Ace Combat 2 for see how it start and the how it evolves. AC3 has probably one of the most awesome story telling , and even branching path even if is set in the "future" of the strangereal timeline (2045). If you want 2 but with more actual Ace Combat story telling , play the remake of 3ds. The ones i most recomend are the holy trinity from PS2, particulary Zero.

It has WWII style aircraft although they're fictional. 2nd: There are a few Ace Combat games that have real flyable WWII aircraft. Ace Combat: Joint Assault being the first, followed by Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy and the most recent: Ace Combat Infinity as part of an update. Although Namco and Project Aces haven't released an Ace Combat-style WWII game, it would be pretty cool if that were a thing.

Like almost every first ace combat mission.

Ace Combat 2
Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere
Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies
Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War
Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War
Ace Combat X: Skies of Deception
Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation
Ace Combat: Assault Horizon (should this one even count? -_-)
Ace Combat 3DS (3D Cross Rumble)
Ace Combat Infinity (sort of...)
All except Joint Assault. JA is the odd one out apparently. :P
Glacial Skies was my favorite with Sitting Duck in close second.
The majority of those had such a mission as the first one in the game, even JA had a similar mission only with fragile fighters instead.
