One of my favorite things about my conversion is being able to shoot .22 through a faster twist 5.56 AR barrel. It stabilizes the Aguila 60 grain SSS .22lr very nicely, and is awesome to shoot suppressed.
With a 1:7 13” barrel what kinda distance could you expect with these 60gr .22? I plan to use it for steel matches but there’s a few special .22 only matches that sound high speed enough to me that go out to hefty distances some of them even 230yds. I figure a 5.56 barrel probably won’t be able to reach those distance? What ab the 60gr ammo??
@@Marksman5147 I think any 22lr is going to be dropping like a rock at that distance. But a 60 grain at 1000 fps will certainly have an advantage over a 40 grain at 1000 fps. I bought one of these CMMG kits about 10 years ago for 25 bucks used in a shop. Came in a brown plastic box that was cracked with two steel 10 round mags. Worked fine in a rifle I put together. I later put a dedicated pistol together and reversed the gas block blocking the port omitting the tube to keep the gasses out of the upper. Stays a lot cleaner. I use several different plastic manufacturer mags in it no issues.

I bought this set and had a ton of problems in my Ruger AR556, specifically failures to fully eject with the brass getting caught up in the ejection port. I did two things to resolve the issue and now it runs great. 1. Put a little fuzzy side velcro on the top front of each magazine to take up some of the slop, and 2. Purchased an aftermarket charging handle for this kit that does not have the long groove on the underside.
So, update on my kit: CMMG sent me three new mags to try out. On first inspection the springs seemed more stiff than the originals, so I was hopeful this would solve it. Unfortunately, it did not. Same feed issues as with original mags, even with sturdier springs. I even swapped out the factory springs with Bore Buddy replacements, to no avail. I also tried CCI Stinger ammo as well as Tac-X designed for AR-15/22 setups...no go. At this point, I'm convinced it's the loose fitting magazine in the mag well throwing off the feed ramps causing it to bind up. I guess I'll try other mags at this point. I hear S&W 22 mags are stellar so might pick one up to see. Shouldn't be this annoying...

Here is an update to my cmmg 22LR conversion kit. I wanted to build an AR pistol without the buffer tube. Realizing that this kit does not use the buffer tube. I thought it would be perfect for my build . Turns out that I had problems with misfire. The reason is because the buffer spring keeps the cmmg conversion bolt carrier held firmly forward into the chamber. Soooo, I made a threaded plug in my Lathe that threads into the lower receiver and tightens with the buffer tube castle nut. In this plug, I also threaded a 3/8 -16 thread in the center using a shortened hex head cap screw so that after pinning the upper to the lower, I can tighten the cmmg conversion bolt carrier into the chamber. (Only finger tight of course). Wow! I must Give Cmmg a big 5 Star for their design. I just built an awesome semi-auto 22LR pistol that I love in every way. It's much more compact than any other AR pistol. I'm using a 9" barrel. Blocked off gas tube. And it is quite accurate too. Other than what I described about the plug and gas tube , there are no special modifications to the upper, lower, barrel or Cmmg conversion kit whatsoever! This ain't a hard build if you can make the rear plug as I described. I would like to post a pic but I don't think it's possible in this comment section. She's a black beauty without a tail. Thank you Cmmg! Couldn't have built a buffer tubeless AR pistol without you. ❤❤❤
I must say that I'm thoroughly impressed. I figured out that this would be the perfect setup for a buffer tubeless AR pistol. Sure is nice to knock off 6 in off the back of this AR pistol by not having the tube there at all. I just cut the threads off of the tube and still use the castle nut for several obvious reasons. It doesn't work perfect because it's only a 7 inch barrel and maybe it's a gas pressure problem. I'm sure I can fine tune this. First I'm going to try a weaker hammer spring. If no luck then I will try opening up the gas block a little bit. But it works well enough that I know that I can get this to semi auto perfectly. Nice job cnmg.
You shouldn't have to adjust gas since the conversion is blowback. If you continue with complications, please reach out to our customer service team. They can better help you trouble shoot it.
@@CMMG that may be true. I think it's an incredibly great conversion kit. But remember I'm using it on a pistol with a 7 inch barrel so maybe I'm not getting enough gas pressure because it's a 22 caliber LR anyway
Oh wait a minute... So in other words, it does not use the gas tube at all even though that it is still left intact and it is all solely relying on the recoil of the cartridge?
@@CMMG thank you and that is very helpful to know. And I just want everybody to know that I think you are offering an excellent product and I have heard nothing but good about it. I would like everybody who is reading the comments to know that I am actually doing something a little bit different. I am using your product to create a pistol that has no buffer tube. attached. I am expecting to have to do a little bit of tweaking. However knowing that I think I'm just going to shoot quite a few rounds through it and see if maybe a break-in will help. And even if I have to tweak something... I feel confident that I will not have to modify the cmmg kit in any way. You folks do have an impressive design Thx.
They are awesome. I have a very old edition and the magazine WAS horrible to deal with, but two days ago cmmg told me how to fix that issue and now it drops like butter. I will definitely be picking up some of those newer mags for extra. My bolt still works flawlessly. Also, great idea as gifts! A true 2a supporter.
@@MrSoonermadman good to hear! Amen brother!! 2A all the way!!! I am anxious to try the new mags aswell, even tho i never had any problems with mine 🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
Even more fun when suppressed! I have the Adam Arms piston kit on my MSR and it cycles the bolt with no issues. Using standard velocity 22LR the action and hitting the target is louder than the report of the shot.
I’ve had mine for nearly 20 years. There’s a lot of good reasons to use it. It’s your weapon, your optics, your charging handle, your trigger. Sort of think of it as dry firing on steroids
Just got my first AR-15 yesterday. Looking forward to installing this first to learn and then to save some bucks practicing. I'll shoot some 223 and 556 from time to time but this kept me from needing to buy both the Z-15 and the M&P 15-22.
This what I SHOULD have done.. spent hundreds on ammo (.223/5.56) and feel like it was a “waste” as training was so limited and duration between sessions were so far apart. This should definitely help me out!
I've been thinking of going this way. One of the video;s I saw was to add a Presser Buddy and an insert on the charging handle. One is to take up slack in battery, and the other prevent gases from blowing back in your face. I did not notice when the video was made, so maybe the new stuff is already incorporated!
If your having trouble try adding an extra buffer, quarters or something to take up space in the tube and tighten the spring. It helps stop the spring from causing bounce back. Then get an extra charging handle and fill the back inch with hot glue that will help with powder burns. And don't run for crap I'm ati polymer
I'm watching this video because I'm planning on buying this next week and I'm just a little bit skeptical. I don't see how it's not going to damage the barrel but I'm here to learn
I've had mine for a few years now and these things shoot as about as good as any other semi-auto .22, other than maybe an accurized rifle. My favorite thing about it, other than it's accuracy, is that it allows me to shoot 2 calibers with one gun so I have more space for steaks and beers in the truck.
I bought my kit a few years ago, it was buggy, the magazines fit lose in the well. Kept jamming, I had to add epoxy to them for a snug fit. Haven't used the modified magazines yet....
boonie packer better mag adapter, allows you to use s&w 22lr mags. i never have issues. also recommend using a 22lr charging handle and tacom pressure plug.
The only thing this video really told me about this product is that it exist. Is it accurate? Is it reliable? Is it or isn’t it depending on the ammo? Idk but it exists 👍
I was so about to buy that upper receiver off ur website till I noticed the plastic deflector. Man wish yall kept that metal I would have ordered on the spot.
My experience is that these are jamomatics in any rifle with a mid length or longer gas system. Carbine length gas systems and under, they run like a dream. Now I just wish they'd build one in .22 WMR.
sorry to hear about the problem with your conversion kit. please contact our customer service department as they'll be the best way to troubleshoot the issue directly with you and they can get more details. Sometimes it's as simple as making sure the conversion is lubed well, other times it can be ammo selection.
Good one, but you should say it won't work if someone got notched hammer, it isn't compatible. To make it work you need to replace hammer, or grind the notched one.
We specify that on the product pages. Sorry we forgot to mention it in the video as notched hammers aren't as commonplace anymore. Most manufacturers currently run rounded hammers.
If i simply start immediate actions slap that mag like a latina with attitude rack the slide like your pulling her hair will it cause issues? Basically every reload practice immediate procedures for a malfunction?
i have one of the new kits, i dont know about it! first price was insane but i found it on PSA for like $160 with 3 mags(by the way are a pain to load), then spent shells keep getting stuck even with the special charging handle, a few failer to eject and after about 500 rounds holy crap is my gun dirty, looks like a 50 year old gun thats never been clean lol,
I bought this about a year ago, while it hasn't had any failures, I just don't use it that much. I'm not putting the product down or talking bad about it, I just wish I had gotten a 22LR rifle.
Can you elaborate why you don't use it much? I'm on the fence, a Ruger 10/22 is not much more money or a Rossi RS22 is actually cheaper. On the flip side this allows you to practice more with your AR, if the goal is to get really good with the AR.
@@SSid-or8rv While it does let you go to the range with 1 less rifle, to me it's just not that accurate and the 22lr really dirties up the gun. I'll eventually get a 22lr rifle, it's just not in the cards yet. I do have a Rossi RB22m 22 mag and it's a very accurate rifle. Hell, it makes me look good at shooting. In my personal opinion, get the 22lr rifle, I think you'll be happier.
I really wonder if you guy’s could pull off a .300blk conversion to 9mm kit. Then I’ll never be able to deny .300blk because I could utilize you guys 9mm conversion kit with same reasons for the .22lr kit. 9mm AR bcgs already exists for the AR platform could you guys modify one, I’m just saying lol. It would definitely get me into .300blk knowing I could use another caliber with one barrel. That would be sick!🤯💯 … or maybe it doesn’t have the correct circumstance for bullet projectile fitment?
I have only one regret about my CMMG Bravo .22LR AR-15 Adapter. That regret is, "That I didn't invest in it a lot sooner than I did." Member of an Indoor Caliber Restricted Range, where Center-fire rifle is prohibited. Nearest Outdoor Range is 2+ hours away. Buying CMMGs Adapter makes my AR legal for use at my club. Our lanes are 60' long, and at that distance, accuracy is as good as any Semi-Auto 22 I own. At the outdoor range, accuracy is still adequate out to 50-75 yards. At 100 yards, the groups start to widen up a bit more than the other semis I own. Is it Match Grade Accurate? No, but neither is a stock 10-22. If you own an AR in 5.56/.223, I highly recommend investing in CMMG 's Bravo Kit. Running a little Rimfire cartridge that costs $0.05 - 0.10 compared to $0.50 - 1.00+ per round means a lot more economical trigger time. The only issue I had was some 6 or 7 year old Remington Thunderbolt ammo, and I blame that on the ammo. It's given me issues in my other .22 self loaders. That's why it's 6-7 years old. I don't buy Remington .22LR at all because it only works consistently in single shot or revolvers in my experience. Has a lot more fouling too. Mexico's Aquila ammo is better than Remington's.
It's fun when it works. The most frustrating thing is, the kit is not consistent when it wants to work. Somedays I can go 500 rounds without a malfunction , but others I can't shoot 5 rounds without a jam.
It's been out for quite some time. We'd have to look for the exact release, but with magazine restrictions, we had to adapt early. We'd estimate every bit of 8 years.
I keep seeing different answers to this question: What grain and type of ammo have you used and what tends to work best? Id love to keep the price under .08 cents a round with todays prices but i just keep seeing conflicting answers. i have a 16" Stainless Steel Barrel PSA built rifle.
The kit is great but there are approximately 20+ mags on the table. At $20-25 each there is about $400-500 in mags which can get you 1000 rounds of 556.
Mines a single shot mostly, fails to charge, eject, I've never shot a magazine wo errors, I literally let new people shoot it so they learn safe clearing practices cause that's what they mostly doing when shooting it 😢 tips or tricks to actually get it to work well?
I bought this set and had a ton of problems in my Ruger AR556, specifically failures to fully eject with the brass getting caught up in the ejection port. I don't have to convert my barrel? Will the round wobble down the barrel if I don't have the correct bore (the bore being bigger due to it being spec for .556/.223)?
It's minimal difference in bore. The biggest differential will be the twist rate. The conversions aren't going to be for accuracy, more for cost effective training.
I own and have used your conversion kit in the past with good results in general. I stopped after picking up a 15-22. Been looking at your dedicated 22lr uppers which I assume work just like conversion kit without the chamber adapter. Couple questions, since I have a bunch of 15-22 magazines I was wondering if you have tried the Better-Mag adapter in your conversion kits and 22lr upper? Also, with the dedicated 22lr upper what kind of accuracy can you expect with something like CCI MINI MAGs? I ask because with the conversion kit I have noticed I get some back and forth movement inside my upper which seems to open my shots groups up somewhat.
We've not tested with the Better-Mag adapter, but know a lot of people run them with little to no problem. Regarding the dedicated upper, the main thing is you will have the correct twist rate therefor a more stabilized projectile and it will be more accurate. While the conversion kit is decently accurate, dedicated is the way to go if you are wanting the best accuracy.
i use that mag adapter, it's awesome. last round bolt hold open, easier to load mags, never have issues. it's on my 4.5" cmmg 22lr upper and after 5k rounds i still can shoot out a bullseye
@@CMMGhey there. I just purchased one of the conversion kits. For some reason and Ive tried it in two different rifles. You either have to hold pressure up on the mag or bench rest it or it will not feed when pulling the charging handle or feed while firing.
@@CMMG I tried it in a Ruger 556 and a PSA lower. The mags are tight no play thats what makes no sense. My buddy has a conversion kit feels the same as mine but his works great. It runs great when I bench rest but I cannot chamber a round unless a lil upward force on mags.
The .22 conversion is straight blowback, so there's no need to worry about the operation. As long as the piston is removed from the system it should work just fine.

There isn't one specifically for that. It depends on the side charger. If the side charger it meant to work with a standard mil-spec BCG that has no alterations, then it's very likely compatible. It all depends on how the charger engages the BCG.
nope. the cmmg bolt inserts into the chamber snug and has a smaller chamber to hold the 22lr, allowing it to fire easily and safely from the 223 barrel

Try CCI AR Tactical rounds. They're about .08 a round everywhere.
Probably the best thing I bought for my AR by far.
This is actually so cool!
Cmmg has the best customer service in firearm industry from my experience
Love this product, I have purchased 2 for me and 1 as a gift for my brother in law, he loves it. Saves me a bunch of money
Great to hear!
I love the AR lower you have multiple uppers for one lower, what's not to love 😁
@@JoeSmith-zi3bi that is correct
Just bought my 2nd one.many pluses.few minuses.really good for wearing in New parts in New builds. Thanks.
I’ve had a couple of these over the years and I love them.
Just ordered this bad boy, cant wait. 22lr from a 16" barrel AR with red dot and magnifier. This will be a cheap way to have a blast!
Thanks for letting us know
I have one and it runs great in a shot out m16 upper I picked up at scrap prices. Very reliable.
Got one of these and love it, told two other guys about it and both were "really?" and went out and bought them.
Just got mine still in the package ready to get it out and try it
How was it?
Best kits ever!!! I give these out as stocking stuffers for Christmas, they are so great!
@@MrSoonermadman they are priced very well for what you get out of them! Its an amazing deal! If you live in SWFL, Yes i will.
Okay I would like to know if this conversion kit changes the zero of the rifles sites red dot and iron?
Great question! Do you know the answer?
@@mnrodriguez well I used both and it doesn't change. The. 22lr and 5.56 stay the same.
@@russellleavitt4449 , good to know, thanks!!!
@@mnrodriguez anything to help
This is part of buying an AR15 in my view. A 100% must have for sure! You also should buy a Lightin' Grip speed loader.
I’ve had mine for nearly 20 years. There’s a lot of good reasons to use it. It’s your weapon, your optics, your charging handle, your trigger. Sort of think of it as dry firing on steroids
bought one of these last week, can't wait to use it.
Great to have saved me big time 💲 training during cov id🇺🇲👊
If you have a .22 conversion kit fitted to your AR can you use a .22 suppressor or do you have to use a .223 5.56 suppressor?
You can use a .22 supressor. Just don't shoot a .223 or 556 through it
If your having trouble try adding an extra buffer, quarters or something to take up space in the tube and tighten the spring. It helps stop the spring from causing bounce back. Then get an extra charging handle and fill the back inch with hot glue that will help with powder burns. And don't run for crap I'm ati polymer
Are these full auto rated for binary trigger setups ??
I fell in love a lot harder when I got that cmmg conversion
I'm watching this video because I'm planning on buying this next week and I'm just a little bit skeptical. I don't see how it's not going to damage the barrel but I'm here to learn
I've had mine for a few years now and these things shoot as about as good as any other semi-auto .22, other than maybe an accurized rifle. My favorite thing about it, other than it's accuracy, is that it allows me to shoot 2 calibers with one gun so I have more space for steaks and beers in the truck.
Great explanation thank you
How do you recommend maintenance of the conversion kit and barrel?
I bought my kit a few years ago, it was buggy, the magazines fit lose in the well. Kept jamming, I had to add epoxy to them for a snug fit. Haven't used the modified magazines yet....
boonie packer better mag adapter, allows you to use s&w 22lr mags. i never have issues. also recommend using a 22lr charging handle and tacom pressure plug.
The only thing this video really told me about this product is that it exist. Is it accurate? Is it reliable? Is it or isn’t it depending on the ammo? Idk but it exists 👍
Are those new magazines with the red follower any different than previous generations?
Primarily in design. Function is the same, but with an added piece on the follower to better actuate one of the old bolt hold open kits.
This runs great in my hoffman tactical made parts.
Hi, I just had my conversation kit delivered. But it keeps misfiring every 4-8th shot (casings getting stuck). What could be wrong?
sorry to hear about the problem with your conversion kit. please contact our customer service department as they'll be the best way to troubleshoot the issue directly with you and they can get more details. Sometimes it's as simple as making sure the conversion is lubed well, other times it can be ammo selection.
Do the Paul Harrel, shoot until you have one round left. Drop mag, put in another and keep shootin'
and if i buy the 22 version, can i buy 5.56 bolt? i ask because in my country we cant get the 5.56, but i can import the 22 version
If used with the Catch 22, will the newer magazine engage the catch?
Have one for a few years and never used it yet.
Great addition to my rifle..gives me a lot of hands on for cheap
Good one, but you should say it won't work if someone got notched hammer, it isn't compatible. To make it work you need to replace hammer, or grind the notched one.
We specify that on the product pages. Sorry we forgot to mention it in the video as notched hammers aren't as commonplace anymore. Most manufacturers currently run rounded hammers.
If i simply start immediate actions slap that mag like a latina with attitude rack the slide like your pulling her hair will it cause issues? Basically every reload practice immediate procedures for a malfunction?
i have one of the new kits, i dont know about it! first price was insane but i found it on PSA for like $160 with 3 mags(by the way are a pain to load), then spent shells keep getting stuck even with the special charging handle, a few failer to eject and after about 500 rounds holy crap is my gun dirty, looks like a 50 year old gun thats never been clean lol,
I got one of the kits but discovered it's a pain with my side-charger. Wish I could use the kit easily.
In my personal opinion, get the 22lr rifle, I think you'll be happier.
my bolt doesnt like to seat all the way with hollowpoints. is this normal for your conversion kit?
Is that legal in Canada?
Where can i find the mags alone?
part number 22AFC2B on our website or your parts dealer
Are the 10/25 mags convertible if legal?
That regret is, "That I didn't invest in it a lot sooner than I did."
Member of an Indoor Caliber Restricted Range, where Center-fire rifle is prohibited.
Can you guys make a conversation kit for 308 to shoot 556 like the colt 901 did
It's fun when it works. The most frustrating thing is, the kit is not consistent when it wants to work. Somedays I can go 500 rounds without a malfunction , but others I can't shoot 5 rounds without a jam.
Do you need to shoot a certain grain such as 40 gr?
What year did you guys release the 10 round conversion kit? Its awesome!
It's been out for quite some time. We'd have to look for the exact release, but with magazine restrictions, we had to adapt early. We'd estimate every bit of 8 years.
It's worth every penny!
I just wish they still included them in the brown hard cases.
I have 3 of these and currently buy additional mags for them.
Btw, is this legal against the California AWB? Other than the 10 round mag version?
do you offer it in 22wmr?
I keep seeing different answers to this question: What grain and type of ammo have you used and what tends to work best? Id love to keep the price under .08 cents a round with todays prices but i just keep seeing conflicting answers. i have a 16" Stainless Steel Barrel PSA built rifle.
The main thing is to go for copper jacketed ammo. It just feeds better. We see a lot of 36-40gr running great.
Mine doesn't like Winchester 36g golden bullets. It does 36g CCI Mini Mags just fine.
You make a speed loader to go with those mags?
We don't make it, but we highly suggest the McFadden Lightnin' Loader. We have them on our website. Makes events we go to so much more manageable.
The kit is great but there are approximately 20+ mags on the table. At $20-25 each there is about $400-500 in mags which can get you 1000 rounds of 556.
valid point, but you'd also have $300-400 in magazines to have 1000 rounds of 5.56 loaded in magazines...
I wouldn't throw away the rubber protector..good to put on if you're keeping in your traveling bag or whatnot
I did two things to resolve the issue and now it runs great. 1. Put a little fuzzy side velcro on the top front of each magazine to take up some of the slop, and 2. Purchased an aftermarket charging handle for this kit that does not have the long groove on the underside.
How to buy
I don't have to convert my barrel? Will the round wobble down the barrel if I don't have the correct bore (the bore being bigger due to it being spec for .556/.223)?
I have a stock Sig Sauer M400
It's minimal difference in bore. The biggest differential will be the twist rate. The conversions aren't going to be for accuracy, more for cost effective training.
@@CMMGLink to conversion kit?
So this kit wont work with my mkgs banshee 9mm? Only the 5.56 ?
Correct. These are only for 5.56 chambered ARs (and there is also one for our Mk57 uppers), but nothing with a larger bore.
@@CMMG ok thanks. Will need a .22lr option at some point! Ty
So the bullet is fired through a 223 barrel correct?
correct. this conversion adapts the chamber to accept the .22LR cartridge, and allows the magazine to feed properly
Does it work with a folding stock?
Yes. The bolt’s travel is only the length of the conversion unit itself.
The S&W mags hold open when combined with catch22 gen2 😢 Too bad i have to mix venders because lack of forethought in cmmg mag design.
Wouldn't say lack of forethought. Our .22lr magazine interface has been out since before the M&P15-22.
This doesn't gunk up the barrel? Say you have a really nice, expensive AR-15.. Would you suggest against using this in that expensive rifle?
we wouldn't recommend it for prolonged use without cleaning. even just switching back to 5.56 on occasion will help that from building up
I own and have used your conversion kit in the past with good results in general.
@@tlc239 what kind of lower? That sounds excessively loose
@@CMMG I tried it in a Ruger 556 and a PSA lower. The mags are tight no play thats what makes no sense. My buddy has a conversion kit feels the same as mine but his works great. It runs great when I bench rest but I cannot chamber a round unless a lil upward force on mags.
Will this work with a piston ar? An Adams Arms piston to be specific?
It should. We modified them many years ago to work with most pistons. Looking at the Adams Arms, they're similar to our old ones and should be good.
Is this kit compatible with PWS rifles with long stroke gas piston system? Specially PWS MK111 Pro?
The .22 conversion is straight blowback, so there's no need to worry about the operation. As long as the piston is removed from the system it should work just fine.
Will it work in a AR Ruger 5.56? Thanks!
Do they make one for a side charging AR-15
There isn't one specifically for that. It depends on the side charger. If the side charger it meant to work with a standard mil-spec BCG that has no alterations, then it's very likely compatible. It all depends on how the charger engages the BCG.
I’m so confused on the battle situation lol , so u don’t need a 22 barrel ?
nope. the cmmg bolt inserts into the chamber snug and has a smaller chamber to hold the 22lr, allowing it to fire easily and safely from the 223 barrel
Great video. I am going to try to get a couple of those new mags. They look a lot better than the grey beast of a mag I have. Thanks again! Cmmg is an awesome company.
Will this damage a 5.56 suppressor?
We would advise against using it with a suppressor as the rifling for a .223/5.56 is a different twist rate and doesn't stabilize a .22lr properly.
@@CMMG Placed my order today thanks for the reply!
