I read somewhere they broke up because ian was ready for kids, nina wasn't and she wouldn't keep him from living his life and so they went their separate ways. Might be bullshit tho but sounds realistic given their age difference

I was very active on the fandom at the time, and definitely the rumor of Ian has cheated on Nina never happened. The rumor was that Ian wanted to settle down and Nina wanted to pursue her career. I think it’s proven to be true, because Ian got married and has a baby, Nina on the other hand, hasn’t been (at least on a public) relationship for years.
As someone who worked on this show for 5 seasons, I can 100% say there was no weird drama on set that I ever saw. No one ever acted anything other than professional. And there was no beef between Nina and Ian or Nikki. That was all drama that simply didn’t happen.
See how hard it was for Ian to do sad scenes, Paul and Nina and Joseph and Kat Graham are obviously the better actors BUT he still did great in that “ I wanted my mother” scene.
Those two scenes are some of my favorites, especially the roadside confession scene. One thing I do agree with the actor about is how easily everyone forgave all the atrocious things Damon (and especially Klaus) did. They never even had to make sincere apologies for them. Like a cutesy smirk and a half-assed oopsy my bad, was all it ever took for bygones to be bygones. Whatever it may say about me I wasn't so forgiving of their characters. Especially when Damon killed Jeremy without knowing he had a Gilbert ring on. That should have been unforgivable.

Yeah, everything from there on out was rape. Then he was emotionally cruel to her especially the time he compelled her to throw that party at the Grill to give her the opportunity to get Emily's necklace back from Bonnie. She approached him at the bar to have a normal, regular conversation with him and he tripped balls because she wasn't able to get it and he just responded in the cruelest way saying that she "Was the only thing stupid there. And useless. And shallow." My heart broke for her and I didn't even like her character yet.

I don’t think because Damon turned into a good guy that he was soft. Damon was always the leader of the group that handled and took care of everyone. He always went head to head with every villain a lot of times by himself. Damon was never soft.

The Ian and Nina situations isn’t that complicated I believe, you gotta keep in mind they had a 10 year difference in age, so if Ian was ready to marry her and have kids maybe she wasn’t. A lot could have explained their break up, I don’t believe that Ian cheated on Nina at all, it would have caused more fights I believe. On set they stayed professional and where friends afterwards. If cheating was the case I don’t believe it would have ended that way. Ian thought we gave damon too much leeway really DAMON, we gave Stefan and Elena to much leeway, not Damon all I hear from people is “Damon is the meanest, he’s impulsive,he kills for no reason, Damon’s has no humanity Inside of him”. When Stefan is able to go on a killing spree and people will say “hes the ripper he’s not thinking straight” like come on. While Damon when he goes on killing sprees everyone is like “he’s mean, he did it for nothing” like really. Someone commented this in a video and I’ll copy past it: I feel like the only character the writers have the guts to give proper development is Damon. Whenever the other 2 screw-up there’s always an excuse or is brushed under the carpet. *stefan* Stefan stalks Elena for 3 months - brushed under the carpet Stefan doesn’t tell Elena she’s Katherine’s doppelgänger before sleeping with her - swiftly brushed under the carpet Stefan risks elena’s life when he doesn’t have his bloodlust under control (1x18-1x21) - oh it was the bloodlust clouding his mind Kills tons of people in the summer - he had no control, he was the ripper Stefan calls Elena a human bloodbag - oh he was the ripper, he wasn’t himself back then Stefan tries to drive Elena off wickery bridge - he was having blood-control issues Stefan let’s Elena die - he was “respecting” her choices (even though he fails to do the same three episode later when she decides to ask Damon for help) Stefan can’t accept vampire Elena - she’s not herself anymore so maybe he’s justified. *elena* Uses Damon as her whipping boy, pushing and pulling him, giving mixed signals - NEVER MENTIONED EVER AGAIN ON THE SHOW Elena chooses Stefan yet again but it clearly is a mistake since she goes to Damon 6 episode later - never even mentioned, let alone be treated as a mistake for which she needs to redeem herself in Damon’s eyes. Elena turns off her humanity and goes down a dark path after all the pain she’s been through - it wasn’t her her choice, Damon made her do it. Stefan and elena’s mess-ups are always left ambiguous which restricts space for their proper character growth Now Look at Damon Comes in town to destroy it and release the tomb vampires on the town people - no excuses, he was evil. He spends the rest of the season redeeming himself by protecting the town from those tomb vampires, almost loses his life in the process. “ I came into this town wanting to destroy it. Tonight I found myself wanting to protect it. How does that happen?” Snaps Jeremy’s neck - no excuses, spends the rest of the season protecting Elena and trying to be her friend to redeem himself. Let’s his humanity back after an intense internal conflict because SHE wants him to feel. Forcefeeds Elena his blood (to save her life, but even so) - no excuses, realizes his mistake, apologizes to Elena and spends the next few days running around doing damage control to prevent the sacrifice. Snaps Ric’s neck - no excuses. Apologizes to Ric and spends the next few episodes trying to get back his friend. Every mistake Damon has been treated as one. This has led to further character development for him. The writers don’t fear to completely break him down to build him back up again. As Damon says in 2x21 - “it was ALL ME”. Someone else said this: The thing about Damon is he never acts like anything then himself. He’ll admit the horrible things he’s done, and some of them he doesn’t regret but when you look at what he puts himself through on a daily basis for his brother and the people he loves I can’t blame him for snapping. It seems like every character loves making him the bad guy so he just embraced it because why show the good of no one sees it anyway. He dragged his brother back after each bloodlust he became a vampire so Stefan wouldn’t be alone. He’s always there and that is what makes him selfless. Comment from Laura wood. I know this comment is 2 years old but this video just stumbled across my feed (probably because I’m rewatching TVD for the billionth time on Peacock 😂). BUT. I wanted to add something about Damon’s character that was said by his character that was said during an episode in season 4 (which I’m currently watching) that resonates with your comment. Damon was locked in the Salvatore basement cell because he was compelled by Kol to kill Jeremy. Klaus was babysitting and they were talking about how Elena seems to look past his wrong-doings and Klaus wants to how/why. They go back and forth and then Damon says to him: “I don’t mind being the bad guy, because somebody has to fill that role and get things done. You do bad things for no reason. You do them to be a dick. If you’re going to be bad, be bad with purpose. Otherwise you’re not worth forgiving”. That’s exactly who Damon is. At the end of the day he repeatedly risked himself to take care of the people he loved and cared about, right down to Tyler and Matt. And that is why everyone forgave him time and time again.

If Nina didn't leave, then Julie and Kevin said that they would have played with the idea of love triangle. Not necessarily ending up Elena with Stefan. If they really wanted Stelena endgame, then the memory loss of Elena in s6 was a perfect opportunity. But they didn't. Instead, they made Elena fall in love with Damon again.
