This was my inspiration to rescue my cat who got stuck on the other side of a security rail fence …I couldn’t go over but I could go under playing this while building the great escape cat tunnel 😂😂 no soil down my trouser leg though and relieved I now have a safe kitty ❤️

I'm French, i was in Saint Etienne for the Euro football game between England and Slovakia on June 20th. I was surrounded by English fans, and for the last 15-20 minutes of the game they were just singing the Great escape theme ! I asked one of the English guy who was next to me why they couldn't stop singing this and he told me : " Cause in three days we will escape from the EU!"
Like so many, my father turned me on to this movie back when I was a kid. I've loved it all my life and for my 60th B-day my daughter took me to Sagan Poland to see the site of Stalag Luft III. This music ran in the back of my head the whole time there. For fans of the movie and history buffs of the whole story it is an incredible trip.
When on long hikes with heavy packs as a boy scout in the '60's, we used to whistle THIS IDEAL tune as best we could, on an endless loop which I guess now, after military training, along with breath management, puts one into a light and positive mood and trance that melted our awareness of fatigue, boredom, hunger and pain - and bonded us together very pleasantly over the long miles and time. We were our own radios then, so to speak, and it was the BEST show in town at the time and we knew of no better.

Many of the music cues heard in the nighttime shots of the men moving between prison barracks or out in the forest at night reflect the influence film composers Eric Korngold and Max Steiner had on Bernstein's music. That was the Hollywood "sound," created by refugees from Hitler's Germany, and powerfully translated in this film by Bernstein.

I remember there was this school camp I went to at the start of Year 8, and at night, because everyone honestly wasn't tired on the first night, we all left our cabins and began running amok the entire camp-site. It was interesting, because eventually the staff caught onto us, so they were walking around torches as large as spotlights. It was very fun, just sneaking around the dark, one-by-one, we were getting caught and being sent to write lines in 'the cooler'. This theme was in my head.
Just watched this movie again for upteenth time! Such a great tribute to the 50 killed and "the Greatest Generation". Love it; even if I do know most of it by heart. This is the era they really knew how to put a great movie!
The point of the movie is not the war. It is the soldier; the warrior.; the voracity of man when frustrated by a nearly demonic adversary. The final survival is the smile after a seeming loss. It is the battle against tyranny that counts.

I like how the theme of this movie is uplifting patriotic when just about everything went wrong in the story.
Probably because, even if they failed to escape, they were still tying up enemy resources to stop them.

I'm 22 and I like this film. But it more strange and at the same time cool that my brother is 10 years old and he loves it too! And this music is so positive.Thanks for it!
I remember there was this school camp I went to at the start of Year 8, and at night, because everyone honestly wasn't tired on the first night, we all left our cabins and began running amok the entire camp-site. It was interesting, because eventually the staff caught onto us, so they were walking around torches as large as spotlights.
It was very fun, just sneaking around the dark, one-by-one, we were getting caught and being sent to write lines in 'the cooler'. This theme was in my head.

Just watched this movie again for upteenth time! Such a great tribute to the 50 killed and "the Greatest Generation". Love it; even if I do know most of it by heart. This is the era they really knew how to put a great movie!
One of my top movies of all time. Love it.
The point of the movie is not the war. It is the soldier; the warrior.; the voracity of man when frustrated by a nearly demonic adversary. The final survival is the smile after a seeming loss. It is the battle against tyranny that counts.
Couldn´t have phrased it better, that is why I love the scene with Steve McQueen in the whire after the motor bycicle crash so much
