Bian is probably the most influential person who has helped to shape my classroom managment philosophy. He came to Mercer County WV 13 years ago and it was my first and most challenging year. I felt so overwhelmed and hopeless. I honestly belive if I had not learned many of these strategies I would not have learned to love my job and love my most challenging kids. I wish I could say I feel like I have always succeeded with every kid, but I can honestly say I have done my best, they all know I love them, and I have planted the seeds that maybe will grow later. I don't know if he reads these comments, but if so, thank you Brian. You have changed my life and the lives of over 200 of my students for the better.

I am using your videos to drive change and flip our behavior culture at school (I'm a school principal). You're using language I've used for years and that they are looking for.❤

A colleague put your book in my hand two days ago and told me your videos were great. I read this strategy yesterday and this one strategy is profound. Thank you for changing my life for the better. Thank you for your insight and delivering it quickly. My students are going to have a better year because of you.

Brian, this is an excellent strategy! I am going to attempt the question challenge today to see how well I can do. As a veteran with only a year and a half now of teaching experience I can often find myself thinking the same thing about time and why did I waste it just now on an argumentative conversation with a kid that obviously is expressing the symptom of issues at home. I feel like this is a great opportunity to improve my teaching and my ability to control my veteran impulses to demand control and respect through firmness.

Thank you, Brian! I just saw one on your reels on FB and thought, "Yes! This is what I call, 'a twisted compliment!'" That is when a student behaves so badly towards me, but something tells me that it's because they feel safe enough with me to let out their frustrations and to speak their mind.
Regarding the question about asking them who talks to them that way, etc., I learned that before and when I tried it, it backfired horribly. They got really defensive about what I was implying about their family etc., especially since I'm Caucasian and they are Latinx. Now, I do have some training outside of education that would allow me some skills to work through such a question, but as a teacher, I shouldn't go there. So, what could I do? Fortunately, I was able to respond by saying something about all of the influences we have in our lives, which can even be what we hear at a friend's house, in movies, songs, media, etc. However, I'd love to hear what you suggest.

Thank you. I just started working in an SUD inpatient residential treatment program 3 days ago. I want to give up because i don't have the tools to deal with a couple of kids in there, especially THAT ONE KID.... lol seriously, though. I was having a stress headache thinking of going to work tomorrow when I found your videos. I see that I'm off to a good start, because I don't do power struggles and I do ask questions. Also, I like your style and I will incorporate it. 🤞 I look forward to hearing more of your work

I see so much of this with a student that I have this year! At the same time, she is the first to volunteer to help, and will give her last if someone else doesn’t have. I’m capitalizing on that, but being a “2nd to last word” teacher has helped as well! She’ll pout for a little while if I don’t engage, but then get right back to business!

Asking questions is a great way to show that you are engaged in a conversation and not just trying to controll them.
Although this may be off putting at first, if they aren't used to it ; in the end they will appreciate it.
    This is great advice !

@ Summer school all June....THIS, yes THIS strategy was immensely helpful today! Your #1 is "gold," without demeaning my students. Thank you, thank you.....carry on! BTW, your visit to Lawrenceville, IL and CUSD #20 was where we met, as I wrote the grant to pay for your PD lesson. #FollowingEverSince #gold #useful #respectful #hooray

Today was a work day for teachers and I put this on for some background PD :) I think I'm going to try the questions only method and see what happens.

Do you have any videos to help school bus drivers deal with student behaviors while driving a big school bus?

A lot of kids wondering the halls who just don't seem to care. Many are not cared for at home. Motivating them & lovign them in a way to get them to want to be in class??

Omg I needed this for my twin girls 14.... it’s non stop and I hate feeling like I’m being mean or taking sides 😭 but they are mean. We have structure with cheer. But they always want to complain when I ask them to do something 😭
