#3 got me. I started training in the early 2000's. I wouldn't tell my employers or my girlfriend's family what I did at first. Eventually I had to answer for some black eyes at work. They accepted it but still treated me as if I were some sort of madman afterwards. My gf's family seemed to tiptoe around me after they found out, as if I was some sort of bronze age barbarian, which, come to think of it, would be pretty cool. Overall it came off okay, but I'm glad I didn't lead with it. It's pretty amazing how differently it was viewed back then; definitely lost some of it's cool when it went mainstream, but overall, things are much better now. Okay #1 is the best. I had to rent the damn things, hopefully as soon as they hit blockbuster, but still nowhere near the event. In fact, the first time I had anything resembling an MMA fight was after some friends and I rented UFC #1 at my friends house who was a big kung fu guy. Sh*t talking happened, and by the time the video was over, we went down in the basement to square off with the closest size guy, except for the 1 or 2 p*ssies who wouldn't fight. I stunned my buddy with a right hand and made him submit from mount with a bar arm choke. I think I seen it in the event so I tried it. My buddy hit me at the same time and cracked my tooth. We had no mouth pieces and kung fu knuckle protectors, probably for bag work. The Kung Fu guy kicked the brawlers ass. He did some kind of three touch kick that looked like Chun Li from Street Fighter. He really was good at practical kung fu, but admitted that any sort of grappling would probably f*ck him up. I knew I would always love this sport from the first night I saw it and attempted to experience a simulation of it.
#5 is especially me. My dad raised me on the sweet science and I always thought of MMA as “rasslin but real tho” now I watch more UFC than anything. Thank God for growth
@@carphucker2973 Usman vs Woodley was more wall and stall if anything. Usman liked to use the cage to wrestle-fuck his opponents to dominant decision victories. Was it entertaining? Not really. Was it effective? Absolutely.
The old days of searching every mom and pop video store. Hunting for the newest VHS tape of fights. And you would have to wait a month till it came out. And if your even lucky enough to have cable back then. Watching it live on PPV was hard. Only a certain few cable companies had it. And of course none of those were in my area of California. So all you had was the tapes.
Martial arts used to be a "mythological secret". Only rich guys who've (claimed to have) been to exotic sounding countries knew it's secrets. Phoneys were considered legit kungfu masters after just 2 weeks holiday trips abroad. Anyone who doubted that was collectively considered as "just a brute who didn't understand true martial arts", and often treated as an outcast. I mean, who can forget the whole Frank Dux and Bloodsport debacle, which took almost 2 decades to unravel? Now those same masters are called geeks and skinny wierdos with long ponytail. They're laughed at. No respect whatsoever, even from their peers. MMA, internet and smartphones had made martial art gossips and rumours verifiable; with burden on proof on the pretender. Thank god for this.
My homies and I would all talk about UFC fights, in early days we all watched WWF/WWE and we loved early UFC so I never experienced anyone putting it down or being ashamed to admit they liked it 🤷♀️
Honest question; has MMA actually surpassed pro wrestling in popularity like this video claims? I’m a huge MMA fan, but I have no idea how popular pro wrestling is. It was a huge deal when I was in high school….before I discovered MMA.
@@soonerborn7603 As a whole, MMA is definitely bigger than pro wrestling but if we're talking WWE specifically then I say no, only the UFC is bigger but not MMA. UFC is the only promotion that has ever surpassed WWE in market value and popularity.
You forgot about the middleweight belt being available again after the undefeated GOAT Chael P Sonnen retired after getting bored of defending his belt, thus giving a chance to the rest of the division
I remember back in 2011 some kids on the school bus were saying that WWE was way better than UFC 🤦♂️ (Although looking back they might've said WEC instead of WWE, which would've made more sense)
Also also, the whole being mainstream isn't always that good, since PPV is just insane at 75 dollars. We in The Netherlands had it good for a year or 2. We had a channel called Veronica(use to be illegal radio, now it's also a tv channel) that had the rights, and streamed the main card, and when you watched it back by event or separate video's, you could maybe find some fights form the undercard jammed in. And all for free. But now they don't have the rights anymore. Just saying that no-one pays that high a price for PPV.
I remember when one had to wait four months in order to get a UFC PPV and when the videos would come out on VHS almost a year after the event. Also, I miss Blockbuster.
My brother and I would find replays on late night cable as teens in the 90s and were hooked. He still buys the DVDs so that he can watch older fights that the streaming services remove. People always seem shocked that I like at all though.
Blockbuster didn't hide UFC tapes in the back next to Faces of Death and porn. It was near the front door next to the WWF and WCW tapes as soon as UFC 1 came out on video in 1994.
It's kind of bizarre that in many ways boxing and MMA have traded places All my buddies and coworkers are always talking about the next big UFC fight yet I haven't heard someone mention boxing outside of the "meme fights" for years.
Been a fan of MMA and the UFC for years I remember watching tuf season 1 with my dad when I was a kid. The reason I started going to martial arts in the first place too been doing it for a long time now and still love it.
#10 is most definitely still a problem (for me) and it’s funny because I was able to talk more about mma years back because of transcending stars like Brock Lesnar and Kimbo Slice. I know there are stars of the same magnitude now but with there being so much more to look at than just one or two guys it makes it harder for someone who doesn’t follow mma that much to keep up. Plus talking about mma with today’s casual and even hardcore fans is just a pain. Too many biased opinions and false narratives created about certain fighters that usually prevent me from having decent conversations with others.
@@destroyerofmorons they are bigger in a worse way though. They may be bigger but its not healthy and its fouled and fraud and possibly are less deserving of it. That is undeniable that they are different even if the stars today are bigger doesnt mean its ok or good thing

Been an mma fan since back when the ufc events where not yet numbered in the double digits. I often look back at the ‘wildwest’ Era of, no weight classes and single disciplined fighters, with rose colour glasses. That being said the “lay and pray” aspect was one of the most problematic issues as far as trying to sell the sport to new audiences. I remember getting hyped for a certain match and then being incredibly disappointed with the complete lack of action during the 30 minute/no rounds, format of some of the early fights.
9:02 the Moment Dana looks at Ngannou.. . "If you win, I'm not putting that strap on you" -- That was the exact moment it entered his head.. the look is obvious LMAOO
This is kinda crazy, as a huge fan of MMA and Joji, I've felt the whole "I can't share this interest with others" thing about both and seeing the clip from his Slow Dancing in the Dark video did something weird in my brain. Idk what compelled me to leave this comment but yeah. As always, love the video and keep up the great work
I dunno man, I’d say UFC has been accepted as a sport for at least 20 years. Even in in the late 90’s people were starting to come around. Granted, it was still quite niche and not particularly popular, but it’s been a LONG time since it was considered “human cockfighting”. I’ve been watching since 04’ and it wasn’t a dirty little secret back then.
I love watching MMA on Point but you guys don't seem to help the false monopoly you say they UFC holds on the market. You guys have one of the biggest MMA youtube channels that's not hosted by fighters so you guys could 100% be using that influence more to try and push more people into watching promotions beyond the UFC. Telling everyone that the UFC holds all the best fighters is basically telling everyone who isn't already a die hard fight fan theres pretty much no reason to watch any other promotion. Its the fans that cause this monopoly the UFC is just taking advantage of it.
What year do you think was the best year for mma fights? 2021 was awesome and I've been going back looking at old fight cards it would be so hard to make a top 10
That is hilarious. I remember renting UFC 1, 2 and 3 on VHS from my blockbuster and it was literally in the special interest section beside faces of death.
Very interesting at UFC 217 (GSP vs Bisping), at msg an usher was telling our section how he felt what we were watching was fake like pro wrestling. You never saw a group of people unite and tell him otherwise, and to shut up, luckily his manager moved him away
It’s hilarious how boxing, where guys die in the ring every year & beat eachother into Parkinson’s, that has the most corrupt judging of any non-Olympic sport, and who’s fighters are only willing to go agains MMA guys where they have all the advantages, think they have any right to hold their nose up about any other combat sport at all.
I actually see pretty often people claiming that specific fights were staged. Often really bloody ones as well. It's bizarre the logic leaps people can make their brains go through when they're salty about placing a losing bet.
Small story about the first point - I was working in a welding shop in Canada. Everyone here has a huge boner for hockey, I watch MMA. One night we were all in the lunch room and someone asked me if I watched sports. I said not really but I watch MMA.... I was immediately treated like I thought I was some tough guy douche bag because I watch MMA. And I'm like, so you watch hockey does that mean you believe you're Sidney Crosby? No? ...
Great story man. I thought hockey fans liked "fights". I guess only when both guys are on skates, wearing helmets and grabbing collars. Btw, I'm a Penguins fan. Used to pretend I was Jaromir Jagr but I never pretended to be Urijiah Faber. You can blame the assholes in Tapout shirts for the misperception of MMA fans. Tbh, that is one thing of several that kept me from even giving MMA a real look as a fan. I've just been a huge fan of the four major North American sports my whole life. Soccer wasn't even on my radar until 2010. But when the pandemic hit and everything else shut down for several months and the UFC was back in 6 weeks, I got an ESPN+ subscription and went all in. I don't train, I don't think I'm Barney Badass. I just enjoy the skilled violence. Especially now that hockey is basically just dudes figure skating with sticks and the NFL has become two-hand touch.
If you understand what real fighting looks like, you understand it's not a work like pro wrestling. But the matchmaking is definitely done in a way to push certain people if they think money is to be made. Fixed fights have obviously happened outside of the UFC, or guys just giving up and taking early dives(late career Bob Sapp), but I can't think of a UFC fight that seemed obviously fixed.
@@feebypeels2883 I appreciate you taking the time to reply, but it would seem you are not familiar with Gematria and how it can be employed to "foreshadow" results that occur to us as "haphazardly". @@feebypeels2883 Wrestling is obviously fake, that defeats the betting aspect. Funny thing was I was doing an earlier version off mma by doing valetudo after boxing 10 years then muay thai for 6 years. So needless to say I never really learned grappling of real jujitsu. The Tudo guys would meet with matter Mendez from 8pm to 11 after the young ones finished there karate lessons. All 8 of us would go in this back room learn a technique or two then fight round Robin style with no weight classes. I was like 19 0r 20. Stayed until I was 23 but didn't realize the natural ability I had and now kick myself for not keeping with it. I would have been pretty decent with some wrestling and jujitsu classes mixed in there. Smh missed opportunities. Plus I had a tough city life that back in those days would have given me a shot no question. Lesson to anyone doing what they love... NEVER. EVER. GIVE UP. THAT'S THE ONLY TRUE FAILURE IN LIFE.
#9 is slowly becoming less true, the UFC has the best marketing and biggest money fights, but to say it has the best talent isn’t really the case. One FC has a huge talent pool, and often has the best fighters sign to them (look at the past three UFC fighters performance after signing to them) Bellator while horrible at marketing is also making moves and signing very talented and young prospects. The UFC really isn’t the top in terms of talent, it’s the top in terms of marketing.
@@feebypeels2883 remember when Sage, Eddie, and Dj went to one and 2/3 of them got dominated in their debut, and the third got knocked out in the championship. Honestly, I found mma easier to follow back in the day because there wasn’t that many guys. There was a time when I essentially knew everyone’s backstory who fought under the pride and UFC banners.
Lay and pray is still very much a thing. Examples that stuck like a sore thumb are Usman vs Woodley and the recent Nganou vs Gane.
Ngannou v Gane was the most satisfying lay n pray to watch lmao
Usman vs Woodley was lay and pray? Since when?
@@carphucker2973 Usman vs Woodley was more wall and stall if anything. Usman liked to use the cage to wrestle-fuck his opponents to dominant decision victories. Was it entertaining? Not really. Was it effective? Absolutely.
Neither one of those fights were lay and pray.
We had a hot box and they replayed fights all the time. Got to watch a bunch of old ufc/pride/k1 growing up before I knew what was what.
Yeah that whole was hilarious lmao 😂 There is a channel called Viking Samurai that talks about all that old stuff from back in the day.
I mean, WWE is STUPID hype
@@MrDanielNguy3n Yeah it is. I can see why people like it, but I don't.
Nah you're just poor

I love the small salad fingers reference that whole series is nightmare fuel 😂
I remember when one had to wait four months in order to get a UFC PPV and when the videos would come out on VHS almost a year after the event. Also, I miss Blockbuster.
Blockbuster was an experience unto itself; picking the move took as much time as watching it 😬.
You miss Blockbuster? 🤔 It's true then, MMA fans ARE sick in the head. Some moreso than others apparently 🤣🤣
My brother and I would find replays on late night cable as teens in the 90s and were hooked. He still buys the DVDs so that he can watch older fights that the streaming services remove. People always seem shocked that I like at all though.
Those days sucked lol
Blockbuster didn't hide UFC tapes in the back next to Faces of Death and porn. It was near the front door next to the WWF and WCW tapes as soon as UFC 1 came out on video in 1994.
Man, gotta love your channel! A MMA freak feels home here
It's kind of bizarre that in many ways boxing and MMA have traded places
All my buddies and coworkers are always talking about the next big UFC fight yet I haven't heard someone mention boxing outside of the "meme fights" for years.
Lol the salad fingers reference though
I still find it hard to talk to friends and family about mma. I am an old lady and I still get shite for enthusiastically enjoying the fights. Fook em
I'm happy that the problem with fighter pay no longer exists
Thank you guys for all the videos! Watch y’all everyday for hours

was wanting for this video for a long time thanks for making the video man
#10 is most definitely still a problem (for me) and it’s funny because I was able to talk more about mma years back because of transcending stars like Brock Lesnar and Kimbo Slice.
NOPE! THE STARS OF TODAY ARE *FAR* BIGGER
@@destroyerofmorons they are bigger in a worse way though. They may be bigger but its not healthy and its fouled and fraud and possibly are less deserving of it. That is undeniable that they are different even if the stars today are bigger doesnt mean its ok or good thing

Great job Bay and team!
Good video with a stellar amount of pop culture references, including salad fingers, well done!
The best Balian video so far, id say
I’m 25. I remember being a kid in the early 2000’s and my dad having to rent the ufc tapes behind the velvet curtain. That was very real
The no more real lay and pray was one of my favorites on the list. Nice!

You had to bring up Jason's Mom!😄🤔😄
20 years ago, MMA-tracker was probably the best way to get your hands on any MMA event.
How long will it be before the PPV cost is $99.99? It’s coming soon. Keep working hard, pirates- we appreciate you.
Hopefully they do more free fights on ABC, I now have to choose between eating food or watching the fights and my girlfriend is tired of not eating :)
A salad fingers reference? I wish I could sub 100 times
2016, 2012, 2009 and 2004 were pretty epic years in UFC that I can think of off the top of my head.

Right.

No? ...

@@devinburkett9036 And then call out another tradesmen in my post fight interview with the HR department.
How great would a list of champions who fought non title fights be?
"Is it fake" vs "is it fixed" did not seem to be discussed nor covered or contrasted.
Why no hard hitting questions?
If you understand what real fighting looks like, you understand it's not a work like pro wrestling. But the matchmaking is definitely done in a way to push certain people if they think money is to be made. Fixed fights have obviously happened outside of the UFC, or guys just giving up and taking early dives(late career Bob Sapp), but I can't think of a UFC fight that seemed obviously fixed.

Just because you didn't pick up on cheating means nothing, the UFC is in the business of making money, not providing an even platform for all to test their competitive edge. Don't kid yourself.
@@cognitivedissonancecamp6326 You ever fought in a cage before? I have. Had to do it at least once. Lot of fun. Not fake. Does it get fake when it gets to the UFC? Like amateur wrestling compared to the WWE? I think at this point, some former UFC fighter would have come out and said something. I'm not opposed to the idea, I just would love to have some kind of proof. Not sure if I would classify numerology as proof, either. Maybe it is somehow. Help me out here.
@@feebypeels2883
Wrestling is obviously fake, that defeats the betting aspect. MMA is clandestinely fake, which preserves the betting racket for the mafia and allows them to fix fights to build fighter brands and extract max amount of hype and profit.
Numerology is just part of the toolset to foreshadow the result, don't assume I'm saying all fights are fixed, that wouldn't make sense to try to do, the point is that the industry is built on entertainment and not on facilitating an even platform to see who is best.

Faces of death I forgot all about those movies 😂
#9 is slowly becoming less true, the UFC has the best marketing and biggest money fights, but to say it has the best talent isn’t really the case. One FC has a huge talent pool, and often has the best fighters sign to them (look at the past three UFC fighters performance after signing to them) Bellator while horrible at marketing is also making moves and signing very talented and young prospects. The UFC really isn’t the top in terms of talent, it’s the top in terms of marketing.
