Completely agree. For a long while Loki has been my favourite chararcter in the MCU and the only reason why I even got into it in the first place. I was very excited to watch the Loki series but also completely stumped by what they did to the character - he definitely did NOT behave like Loki at all. It wasn't a bad series by any means but this is legitimately a different character altogether. This Loki was just too nice, not cunning enough, barely used his magic and didn't behave like Loki would have in any of the previous movies. It was just entirely baffling. I would be fine with this nice version of Loki if they actually showed us the transition to how his character grew and developed but he behaves like this right from episode 1. It was a huge shame and so much wasted potential

I have to share my own opinion and say that I thought the reason why he was like this was because of the “wake up call” he got when seeing his life flash before his eyes. That’s enough for you to change your ways or even question your ways. I don’t believe he changed from the first episode. I think it was a gradual thing. Again just my opinion. I thoroughly enjoyed the writing for this show and they wrote Loki in such a deep, emotional, complex way.

      Late, but.. I agree.
Loki acted so out of character, it was crazy.
Also the inconsistencies are wild, so many plot holes and Loki isn’t even the main part of his OWN series! He became the side character and was barely moving the plot. Sure, things happened to Loki but he didn’t make any decisions that would make a big change to the plot in any sort of way. Also I hated the Sylvie x Loki ship. It was so one sided!
Everytime Loki expressed his feelings to Sylvie, she either looks uncomfortable or is weirded out.
She treated him like absolute trash!
And the fact that Sylvie is just another version of Loki is just… Gross! They portray Loki as narcissistic which isn’t true at all! Sure, he is arrogant but it’s been shown multiple times that it was all just a facade and that he doesn’t think very highly of himself.
The writers keep putting the excuse of “They’re not the same!” But at the same time, they say that “Self love is important” and Loki falling in love with Sylvie will make him learn to love himself or some shit I don’t know!
Also, going back to a previous point. The inconsistencies and plot holes are CRAZY, also the people working at the TVA are complete morons. Like.. The guy working at the desk doesn’t know what a tesseract or infinity stone is! You’re telling me that someone who works at the MOST POWERFUL FORCE IN THE GODDAMN MULTIVERSE DOESN’T KNOW WHAT AN INFINITY STONE OR TESSERACT IS?
Also, not to mention that the WRITER TWEETED THAT HE DID NOT WATCH A SINGLE MOVIE WITH LOKI IN IT! That’s why he was so out of character!!
Yeah, so that is my rant. Thanks if you read it all.
I’m bad at explaining stuff so if you don’t understand anything that I said, I can try explaining it better..
PTG Reviews has a good video explaining all of the flaws. I reccomend checking it out.

The more I watch Infinity War the more I dislike it. They really made Loki die like a chump. In Ragnarök Thor tells Loki he could be so much more than *just* the God of mischief, but because Loki dies almost right after he says that we never get to see that come to fruition.
In Ragnarök I really wanted to see what Loki ruling Asgard looked like. What did the people think of him? What did he think of the people? Apparently he didn't think very highly of them because he was 1000% willing to let them die at the hands of his sister. Did he ever get homesick on Sakaar? He talks about staying there and overthrowing the grandmaster, but he learned the security codes to all the spaceships, so was he planning on leaving at some point? There are so many layers there that should have been dissected but they never were.
Also, for someone who's a master of magic he almost never uses it. What a waste.

Actually, for Avengers exists a deleted scene where it is heavily implied how Loki was influenced. He telephatically talks to the Other in that scene. It's on RUclips. Let's just say that characters are allowed to be complex and change over time. He can be evil in the past and not so evil and then maybe do some more evil stuff again and then decide he wants to not do that anymore. Had to pause watching this video to say how insanely good your analysis of Ragnarok in relation to Loki's character is! I've always loved the movie, and Loki in it, and watching this video made me realise it's not just because I love the humour of it - it's because, as you say, once you accept the movie for what it is tonally, Loki is still SO Loki in it and I LOVE that :)
Edit: also completely agree with you on TDW - that did SO much for Thor and Loki's relationship, and if you don't have that escape scene in the ship between them, I don't think their relationship in Ragnarok would have worked half as well - the comedy between them would perhaps have felt as though it came out of nowhere, and could have been too jarring if we'd seen no interaction like that previously.

Most other villains are some varient of terrorist, and Loki is just a great villain.
Infinity War is kind of a wild ride with Thanos basically stopping anyone and anything from living just by existing. I mean, "he's got into Tony's head, so why wouldn't he have gotten into Thor's?" The answer to that potential question from the writers is this, Loki's a Spy, and Thanos is Heavy from Team Fortress 2. He should have waited to backstab him like he usually does. He would've been a great teammate with Dr. Strange, which he knows exists! He could've played the patient game again and waited to go down to Earth and immediately pretend to be on Maws' side up until he backstabs him and helps Peter, Strange and Tony to get on the ship! That would've led to a more satisfying ending to his character.
They could've made him think more and more about his circumstances.

Honestly, I stopped watching anything Marvel after I bought a yearly subscription to Disney+ just because of the LOKI tv show. This character is wasted potential personified. I wasn't the biggest fan of TR Loki because it felt a bit like Taika Waititi just wasn't a fan of the character at some parts, but honestly, TR Loki wasn't half the bumbling lost boy that his is in 'his own' show. Yeah, I'm a little bitter about it. And the fact that they completely overlook the shitty treatment he gets from the other characters, ignoring it and making him suddenly develop a great relationship with them. How does this guy think of Mobius as a friend after he basically tells him he killed his own mother (the only person Loki feels loved by) and then lies telling him Sylvie is dead (again, the only person Loki 'loves' or feels any connection to) I don't get it.

This is my main problem with Spiderman No Way Home, because they quite literally dumb down Strange in that movie in order for the plot to be able to happen. Because we'd rather have teenagers back talk to the Sorcerer Supreme in opposition to Peter possibly getting told no and him deciding to fool around trying to find a way for himself (which I would rather that, if I'm entirely honest and would be a bit more in character).

He just wanted to be seen as Thor's equal and respected by Odin similarly. The fact that we got a throne-craving Loki in Avengers 1 made it very obvious that Loki wasn't in his right mind, holding onto the mind-spear and being tormented even in his dreams by The Other. Him being mind controlled made a lot of sense to me, watching it way back when. And the fact we didn't get Loki in the final Avengers movie, fighting alongside with Thor against Thanos with his magic... Yeah, that super sucked. DX

    Great video, got some thoughts.
    First, the feedback:
objective quality is a myth, so I suggest you don’t call something “objective” unless it actually is-like, Thor is in Thor: The Dark World. It’s a can of worms not worth opening.
Second piece of feedback is people are trying to throw around words like “crazy” a bit less these days-it kinda is symptomatic of wider casual ableism. Plus, there’s often better words to use! Depending on the situation, you could use: frustrating, strange, evil, off-putting, odd, divisive, alienating, and so on.
    Now, the positives!!
Absolutely inconsistency is a big problem in the MCU. It always has been, but due to the near-constant stream of MCU content we’ve had over the last two years people are actually starting to notice the cracks. It’s been helped greatly by remarkable actors maintaining a continuity via a consistent approach to the performance, but looking back it seems inevitable it was always going to catch up to marvel. Loki is one character I’m willing to give a bit more slack to because he is by his nature someone with a flexible identity. But yes, there’s some odd moments-for instance the “I don’t enjoy killing” line in Disney+ Loki, considering what an absolute blast he was having in the avengers which as you noted wasn’t very long ago. And yes I too wasn’t fond of plopping Loki down in front of Disney+ to binge the MCU and then acting like he actually experienced all of that. Loki from the show felt so weird because he acted like the Loki that went through all that growth but actually was the Loki who just “killed 80 people in 2 days” and lead an alien invasion straight into the heart of NYC. I think my biggest frustration with his growth as a person in the show was because it felt like it ignored just how important Thor was to his arc in the films. I get what they were going for and I do think it is one of the strongest MCU Disney+ shows (kinda a low bar) but it felt so off to have so little of Loki’s growth be tied to Thor considering how important that relationship has always been.
I can’t wait to see what you do next! I definitely do recommend getting back into RWBY as it has been for me a fantastic antidote to the MCU.
Oh! And did you get my invite to my discord on instagram? No pressure, just thought you might enjoy it in my community.

I imagine this was so there weren't any outside distractions in his show, but I think it was a great disservice. So much of Loki's journey is intertwined with Thor's and the fact that he was barely mentioned is a mistake in my opinion.

Thank you for this. You've made a lot of great points. Personally, having so many multiple directors, hasn't always been in the best interest of a lot characters. Also, based on interviews, I suspect Tom Hiddleston himself had a say in Loki's evolution. I believe he's involved in the script/story line in the series. He's made a fantastic Loki, however, I suspect he wanted to bring about Loki's good heart and less villainy. Also, Tom is getting older like the rest of us., He'll have to turn Loki over to the next generation, he's had a fantastic run, it may be hard to say so long.

He made the MCU a heck of a lot of money. That might have been incentive enough to let him have a certain degree of say and be involved in production , contract/wise.
      MCU is about the money.

I actually think his portrayal in the show is pretty good. Maybe a few odd moments, but overall, it's really good.
The only issue I have is that he seems weaker than usual. I'm fine with him being defeated and taken by the tva because he was out of his depth with their abilities, and he couldn't use his powers. But whenever he does have them again, he seems less powerful. It's annoying but doesn't ruin the show for me.
Most of what you mentioned is a result of him being weaker rather than being out of character, so I think this is the only issue. In the end, he becomes the most powerful being in existence, so I'm at least glad about that 😁

The only part I could accept is him getting caught at the very beginning. Why? Because right before this he came out of a portal looking far more injured than he did at the end of Thor 1 falling in the void (dude doubles over in the portal room), has various fights, gets thrown & manhandled by Thor, and got Hulk smashed into the floor. The last couple happened within hours. He may be walking but he is way more injured than the makeup dept ended up showing him. Once he heals up tho it feels real strange.

@teresar6348 Ya pretty much. That's why I don't mind him getting caught at first. But ya, it feels very strange later on when he is at "full power" again.

Consistent characters should be the absolute priority, the story should bend to fit the characters, not the other way around. That said, I have heard some nonsense about the Loki in the series being one from a timeline other than the official one in the movies as a justification for him being so different. Still, sounds like a lame excuse for mutilating a character we love so much.

You'd think each role would have a file on their characterization and major influences so that this wouldn't happen all the time, it doesn't feel like it.

The series itself had some cleverness about it (albeit too slow paced) but ‘Loki’ was ‘absent’ in all episode other than S1E1 and S2E2.
