I really like the Toa Mahri. I like how they are all different from each other, unlike the Inika, which were extremely similar. Personally, my favorite years were 2006-2007. I also loved the Piraka and Barraki. Even the titans were awesome.
Hewkii is one of my personal favorite Toa Mahri. The mask looks great, the cordak blaster is actually well integrated into the build, the decorational spikes on his shoulder looks really cool, the chains adds some extra diversity to posing and I'm always up for a staff-wielding Toa. He is also one of the few Mahri who manages to integrate the red Cordak blaster and rounds into his color scheme since he uses red as an accent color throughout (eyes, headspike, red thigh pins, blaster and rounds). Plus I really enjoyed building his Cordak arm, it's a simple enough construct (it does make clever use of the Piraka left arm piece though), yet it is Hewkii's most unique trait that you won't get with any other Mahri. I do wish his torso was better armored, that his thigh armor had a more appropriate color, that the Cordak arm wasn't so heavy, and that the mask combined with the shoulder armor didn't restrict movement as much as it does.
I also like how he’s the only set that integrates the extra cordak missiles into his design as a sort of armor, whereas the other sets just add them on anywhere where they sometimes get in the way
There's one con I can think of that wasn't listed here: His left arm is both Keetorange and black, but his right arm is just completely Keetorange (Not counting that piece connecting the blaster to his arm). I can take the asymmetry in the shape, but the lack of black on his right arm is jarring to me.
Firstly, I'd like to say, that what you are doing - is great. I mean - reviewing old bionicles. Secondly, I disagree with the evaluation for the Hewkii Mahri. I'm collecting bionicles since 2001 and I have many of them. And this Hewkii, for me, is one of the best, on the same step with Onua Mata, Chirox, Skrall and Ehlek. In the childhood, symmetry was the most important aspect to decide, what is beautiful and what is not. Like, how could I like Kopaka Nuva, if he is not symmetrical? Of course Gali Nuva is better, it is completely symmetrical. I felt, that I like Kopaka more, and he is cooler, but at the same moment I understood, that it's can't be in this way, symmetry rules and that's all. But when I got Hewkii Mahri, sth changed in my mind... after a fight, of course ) It looked so great, that I began to look at things from a different angle, now I can understand the beauty of dissymetrical or even asymetrical things. Thanks to Hewkii for all these metamorphoses )
We complain every time when they use the same build for a character and when LEGO try to make someone like Hewkii unique we complain that he is "weird and ugly" ....
***** I'd hardly say the set is awkward enough to be objectively branded as "not good looking", at least not when sets like the Klakk still exist. To be fair though, the arms are extremely out of proportion thanks to his shorter legs.
If I was in charge of the drawing board for Toa Mahri Hewkii's design, Things I would keep: His Kanohi Garai, his colour scheme, his arm-mounted Cordak launcher and his chain aspect. What I would've changed: Let him stick to the Inika build, give him an oxygen pack on his back similar to Nuparu Mahri, give him symmetrical arms so it's balanced out and give him a hand :D
What I do with the chains is i wrap the one on his spear-holding arm around his arm, and connect the one on the blaster arm to the open pin hole on the piece that connects the blaster
I'd actually say Mantax' resemblance is more of a manta ray than Hewkii, hence the name MANTAx maybe, and Hewkii Mahri's mask definitely looks more like a stingray.
I like how Hewkii's mask in his toa mahri form is black in the middle like his torso and Keet orange ( sorry I don't know the correct spelling) on the sides like his body.
Ah yes, Toa Mahri Hewkii. I remember when I was young and started mocing, I almost always used the pieces from this flathead. Another thing I remember is that Hewkii and Gadunka seemed to have a grudge against eachother, given that they fight 3 times over the course of two comics * Feel free to correct me if i'm wrong *. All in all, a nice set with a few oddities.
Had this guy as a kid... Still have Most of his parts, but I revamped him and made his legs longer and gave him a hordika chestplate as left arm armor, and gave him metru lower legs as lower arms, gave him glatorian hands and made him hold that damn gun normally :)
Another con I discovered: See those blades on Hewkii’s shoulder? Because they are connected by one blue pin each while a long black axle, used to connect the two Cordak rounds storage on his right arm, keeps them in place; the blades are slightly wiggly if you move them.
Funny Story, I purchased this guy about a year ago and he just now arrived. I mean, he was in perfect condition, And I guess it was a pleasant surprise because I wasn't expecting him to come. On a side note, I actually like this set, minus the lack of an appendage
Now kongu, matoro and nuparu are a little more difficult to guess what Animals are they suppose to represent, i think that matoro is based on some abyssal fish, while nuparu is not technicaly a animal but a scuba diver insted, thanks to his mask, and kongu... I have no idea of what kongu is.
I've said and asked this before, but what in the Bionicle universe even counts as a hand to begin with? The 01, 06, and 07 comics had shown the characters using the ball as the hand, and the "hand piece" simply being a connector.
Sevenizer1 Huh. Isn't completeness an opinion? Either way, I don't think that saying a model is incomplete for using the open ball as a hand is fair, as the comics have been using them for at least 3 years.
@Jason Eikenverg I can't tell if you are trolling. It's called gunmetal grey, and Hewkii is the toa of STONE. Just because he has a color from another toa doesn't mean he is the same element? You need to wise up and do better research.
The real irony is I remember putting a black hand on Hewkii's right arm and that actually helped keep the blaster from falling all the way out in a lot of cases.
i replaced Hewkii's yellow Piraka Arm with black one and put one keeorange socket as hand to keep the cordac blaster from sliding from the pin, looks much better now.
One thing about the blades on Hewkii's shoulders. There the only large Bionicle weapon piece to not be used as a Toa's Toa tool. If I'm wrong feel free to correct me.
this is the only Toa Mahri I ever purchased. so I may be a little biased as to how much I like the set, i did however notice right from the get go how wonky him only having 1 hand was.
Can you maybe put the disclaimer in the video description? You say the same thing every time (we KNOW they're not your opinions by now) and it's annoying having to listen to it over and over.
I love this set but I don’t know why they didn’t just save the production of one part by placing a hand at that joint and putting a red axle on the hand then attach the blaster to the had to give it one more point of articulation and one less part to the parts count
That mask is intimidating with the sweeping, rounded cheek guards (remind me of mouth mandibles of some sort). Also, I have a sneaking suspicion the mask was somewhat alluded to via the design of Furno XL's helmet from Hero Factory (I might be wrong, look it up and see what you think).
Great video! I really like your reviews. It is great to know what the old sets were like and if it is worth getting them. I was wondering, do you record your intro skits before or after the review because sometimes it seems like the sets are in better condition that some may think such as when you hit the green visorak with a broom, or when you cut the piraka with a sword. Thanks again for the great reviews.
Hewkii and nuparu were the only two sets I got back in 2007 and I really liked them both me being a fan of aquatic life and gladiators I felt they fit that look pretty well although I feel like hewkii could of had a shoulder mounted cortex blaster by mounting it in the middle of his left upper arm... (But none will ever replace my no.1 my first bionicle I ever got .. *BOOMANGA.* )
] I would always edit him a bit get rid of the spiked leg armor, replace it with black armor pieces, add a black forearm and a yellow hand on his blast hand.
normally a Toa Metru head has a red axle in the head to connect the eye stalk to the head, simmilar to the gen 2 head. Hewkii here uses a 4 long axle to connect the mask to the head and the eye stalk, kinda like a piraka mask.
It would've been neat if they acknowledged his set's lack of a hand in the story. Like, maybe he got it bitten off by one of the Barraki or something, but he isn't letting it slow him down, thanks to an arm-mounted Cordak Blaster that doesn't need a hand to fire.
Naim Mazlan He will most likely review all of the Toa first and then the titans (Hydraxon, Maxilos and Gadunka). Gadunka one of the only titans I have :(
I really like the Piraka build, its simple, might not be too amazing to look at, but it gets the whole body in like, two pieces. The thing I dont understand and HATE is how they somehow decided that the body would look better backwards so you can see where the hip piece lays over the torso piece. A lot of the sets from here to the end did that, and it looks terrible! They could have at least put some armor on it or something. Look at Mistika Tahu (if you can stand to look at him) and the silver hips over the red body is just disgusting. I dont know, it might just be me, but I dont see why.
I don't mind how This Hewkii looks, but understanding why from the fans, but shouldn't we revamped him to be more fitting but stay faith inspired from Inika form?? I'm planning to do that someday.

Hewkii is one of my personal favorite Toa Mahri.

Andy I actually like hewkii too
Ditto. I love his design too.
Hewkii was my sixth Inika and third Mahri. I still feel that the secondary launcher of '07 was better than the primary launcher.
I agree with this and Hewkii was my 4th Inika and final Mahri
He looks so like cool titan, accept he is canister
You do the Hewkii Pewkii and you turn yourself around...
In order to do the Hewkii Pewkii, or Hewkii Pukii before someone gets on our case, you'll have to turn yourself around so unbelievably fast.
That's what its all about
*WOAH* Hewkii Pewkii Pewkii!
Knees bent
Arms stretched
Ra-ra-ra
I like the part when Hewkii says "It's keetongu oranging time" and keetongu oranged all over the place. Truly a keet-orange moment of all time.
I always thought his blade weapon was a harpoon. I'm pretty sure in the comics he attaches the chains to it and throws it like one, anyways.
TheYargonaut He also did that in the Command The Toa Mahri game.
TheYargonaut An Aqua Warblade, to be exact.
Looks more like a halberd to me
"You just Keetoranged all over the place!" Eljay 2015
Sounds like Hewkii just came all over the place.
I also like how he’s the only set that integrates the extra cordak missiles into his design as a sort of armor, whereas the other sets just add them on anywhere where they sometimes get in the way

I Like him to but...his holding arm is so baaad.
We complain every time when they use the same build for a character and when LEGO try to make someone like Hewkii unique we complain that he is "weird and ugly" ....
Stratos 420 There are plenty of ways to deviate from the inika build and still make a good looking set.
***** I'd hardly say the set is awkward enough to be objectively branded as "not good looking", at least not when sets like the Klakk still exist. To be fair though, the arms are extremely out of proportion thanks to his shorter legs.

That would be much better! I don't like the way Lego designed this one.
I love this guy.
Hewkii's shoulder blades inspired me to use the dagger pieces the same way on a build I did when I was a kid. 2 years later, Lego did Akar.
Whenever I look at him I get a harpooner or a pirate vibe, so I think heavily armed and the lack of a hand works very well.
He can't hold crap on his right arm. You kinda need that right hand.
Sevenizer1 Pretty sure Bionicle are ambidextrous. Jaller and Hewkii Mahri both use their left hands to carry their weapon.
Minigun101 Like I said, be nice to have the other hand.
Sevenizer1 Yes, but I don't mind it as much, because it makes him look like a pirate and arguably more badass.
***** Yeah, but still, nice to have the other hand.
I'm pretty sure the gun hand is supposed to be like Megaman's arm cannon.
At first, I thought I was missing a piece when counting the pieces before building, then I saw the instructions. Facepalms ensued.
I personally have no problem with his lack of a hand. It doesn't really look bad atheistically, and can be easily remedied if you want to.
Exactly
I like his color I think its fine
i love his new look, its amazing
I like how Hewkii's mask in his toa mahri form is black in the middle like his torso and Keet orange ( sorry I don't know the correct spelling) on the sides like his body.

Ah yes, Toa Mahri Hewkii. I remember when I was young and started mocing, I almost always used the pieces from this flathead. You know, the funny thing is that having a hand on that piraka arm would've helped tremendously with that loose cordak blaster
absolutely one of my favorite sets. i love it!
This Hewkii looks too evil(but also badass)
He is one of the most interesting Mahri
It’s between him and Hahli
why do people still complain about how long their arms are?
Horseshoe Crab.
I actually kinda really like hewkii’s color scheme and his mask
I always treated the extra cordak rounds for the Mahri as armor pieces and only used the six set aside for the blaster
Hey Hewkii let me give you a hand 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
2007 is one of the best years ever
Another con I discovered: See those blades on Hewkii’s shoulder? Because they are connected by one blue pin each while a long black axle, used to connect the two Cordak rounds storage on his right arm, keeps them in place; the blades are slightly wiggly if you move them.

All hail Solek
You can make a chain mace out of his leg pads.
The Mahri were supposed to represent animals? I can't see it. With any of them, except maybe Jaller, but that's only because he has a crab.
Well as Far as my imagination goes,i suppose that hahli is a lionfish because of her fins, hewkii is an eletric Ray due to the shape of his mask

Unpopular opinion: Hewkii Mahri is my favorite of the six Toa from 2007.

The 01, 06, and 07 comics had shown the characters using the ball as the hand, and the "hand piece" simply being a connector.
The movies replace the connector hands with actual hands so the connectors constitute as hands.
Sevenizer1 But still, wouldn't exposed ball just be the hand? Even 2001 used them

I like the fact it has all those extra weapon pieces and chains, since they can be turned into other weapons with the set pieces.
The real irony is I remember putting a black hand on Hewkii's right arm and that actually helped keep the blaster from falling all the way out in a lot of cases.
Were the toa mahri actually based of animals?
I was 4-5 when these were released so i wouldn't know.
i replaced Hewkii's yellow Piraka Arm with black one and put one keeorange socket as hand to keep the cordac blaster from sliding from the pin, looks much better now.

I always thought hewkii mahri was supposed to represent a manta ray with the flat head and his long spear that's connected to him with the chain.
One more comment saying that he is one of my favorites
The main thing I don't about this set is just how exposed his torso is, like he's missing some armor
He is a cool set.
if you change the arm pieces by the ones in the legs he will be much more better
Oh, the Garai is a Toa now?
I really like the Piraka build, its simple, might not be too amazing to look at, but it gets the whole body in like, two pieces.
