      I did this once in an MD-11 while ferrying an airplane from SJC to LGB. Just us two pilots aboard, minimum fuel plus reserves for the 50' flight. The SJC departure calls for leveling off at 5,000 feet (at least it did in the early 1990s). Right after takeoff we were climbing at 8,000 feet per minute. It made for an interestingly aggressive level off, which we began doing out of about 3,000 feet.

    I remember when Finnair operated MD-11. Usually after major services they used them in domestic routes like for one hour flight with few passengers and no cargo. MD-11 was a beast. Amazing aircraft. When they were replaced with A340-300, we joked all the time here in Finland that there's no four engines, just five APU's. That was clear with Asia routes, where MD-11 took skies quite rapidly with nice climb rate. A340 was so slow and used whole runway to get airborne. Wonderful plane and workhorse that was killed by ETOPS and outdated interior look.

    I flew MD-11s for WGA, I took off out of Miami with enough gas to go to LAX, no freight. 9 minutes from the time I pushed the thrust levers up for takeoff to leveling off at FL 350. I miss these rockets.

      Back in early 1982, I flew on Northwest DC10s from MSP to PDX and then back a few days later. Great plane and great service (back in the day). This was just a few days after the Air Florida crash into the Potomac (I think it was) and everyone on board paid close attention to the de-icing process (it was snowing like crazy in MSP that day).

      I love this plane. I’m new to the aviation world and don’t recognize too many jets yet, but when I saw this one with an engine on the vertical stabilizer I had to find out what it was… never seen that before on a plane. I hear they’re one of the hardest airline planes to land

    • @orion45
      @orion45 8 месяцев назад

      @@henry3397 They are, due to the smaller wings and reduced aerodynamics. The approach speed is much higher than other planes it's size, and especially when it's stuffed to the brim with cargo, approach speeds become almost unmanageable on tough approach patterns. Spacing also becomes a problem when the plane in front of it can't land at the speeds the MD-11 behind it has to approach at.

    Someone I knew, told me that he was on a C-141 as FE. They were at Oceana NAS, on the parallel runway was an F-14. The -141 was empty and light on fuel. They drag raced to 10,000 feet. The -141 beat the F-14. Don't know what the F-14 was carrying. He was FE and couldn't see. Probably had the 3 full external tanks for TDY. The power to weight ratio of an empty -141 is quite spectacular. I was riding in one in lightweight condition.

    • @Orion-ir9fi
      @Orion-ir9fi 7 лет назад +1

      I crewed 141's also, and that sounds like a fish story that just keeps getting bigger every time it gets told. 141s were able to scoot along pretty well particularly when light, but there is no way one could beat an F-14 to FL100. Assuming the story has some basis in reality, I could only surmise the F-14 jockey didn't know they were racing.

    • @raoulcruz4404
      @raoulcruz4404 7 лет назад +1

      According to the story, both aircrews were in on it. The tower called the countdown to take-off. Assuming an F-14A, 5k lbs below gross (65K) has a wt/thrust ratio of 1.54 in afterburner. A C-141 with enough fuel (Oceana to Dover), I estimate has a wt/thrust ratio of 1.90. In that scenario the Tomcat is a better performer. However, I would assume that at some point the Tomcat has to come out of afterburner. After all, he still has to get to his destination (afterburner consuming tremendous amounts of fuel). In MIL power the wt/thrust ratio becomes 2.20. So the -141 has the advantage for the remainder of the climb. The FE that told me the story was a real decent fellow. I worked with him for a year or so. He was known to be a straight shooter. He couldn't tell me by how much they won. 10ft, 100ft..??

    Might not be the fastest...
    I was a Delta employee on an MD 11 ferry flight from MCO to ATL in the early '90s. As I understand it, we were returning one of Delta's early leased MD 11s, that were overpowered, due to certification requirements, to the Atlanta maintenance facility. It was "overpowered". It was also an after 11pm departure from MCO. I was riding jumpseat. The 1st officer was flying. The tower said, " due to sound abatement regulations, please exidite yor climb to 10k feet". The captain told the 1st officer, " watch your tail on rotation." We were light on fuel...just enough for ATL. No cargo...no bags...no passengers...lightest ship the pilots had ever flown...expediting to 10k feet. It was a rocketship. AMAZING!

    The acceleration from the completion of the turn was so fast, I suspect the plane was light or empty of cargo.

    I flew the DC-10-30F for 10 years. Also a rocket at light weights, and not bad on cold/low elevation days at max t/o weight of 572K lbs). When down below max landing weight (421K lbs), an all-engine missed approach was was a busy maneuver--especially with a low level-off altitude (we said "all a-holes and elbows"). In the sim, where approaches were normally made with at least one engine failed, 2-engine go-arounds were actually easier to handle.

    We had MD-11 service out off YVR for years to Amsterdam. Every time as a passenger
    it was a thrill to be on them. Even just sitting in them, you could feel that they were fast.
    Very sweet indeed. being old sucks, I know, but at least I have been able to grow up when Comets, VC-10, DC-8 and Caravelles were common. Even those lame Electras were nicer than anything these days. We had at Schiphol lots of Russian stuff but few 727 and 707.
    Thanks Miami Airborne.

      Yup, remember the common KLM flights to YVR as a kid. The Canadien DC 10s and the Air Transat L1011s!
