    I agree with the “don’t buy me something I don’t want” point. It’s so frustrating to get gifts that I don’t need, want, or know what to do with and I’m not interested in inflicting that stress on other people either.

    Great list, though I disagree on two item: seasonal decorations and books. I've moved around a bit in my life, but its always fun finding new spots for old Fall and Christmas decorations. I don't mind storing them for the year because they really help me get into the holiday spirit when they come back out again. Books are lovely to have around like pictures of family, you look at them and have fond memories of the adventures and characters. To each their own, thanks for sharing!

      Christmas ornaments were always the perfect vacation souvenir! Trimming the tree always brought back great vacation memories. Let's see if this new baby doesn't impact that choice!

    As for trying things with new hobbies, I always find renting the items for the first season is the best option. If I decide I really want to do it next year, I will buy it. You'd be surprised how many "hobbies" are one season things. It's not bad, but it saves you LOTS of money and clutter. It's great to try new things. And, when you rent it each time, you feel the cost of getting into that hobby (ex. skiing, ice skating, kayaking, biking, boating etc) before making the full commitment of several thousand dollars.
    I also agree that library cards are a great way to save money on books. My mom was a librarian so maybe I'm biased ... and frugal. Also, most libraries have free apps like Overdrive, Hoopla, and Libby that work with iOS and Android to rent ebooks, audiobooks, music, and movies. There are so many free resources at our public libraries.

    That’s a valid point you made about books. I too utilize the public libraries and they recently got rid of late fees and are very convenient when the books are available. Also, I enjoy reading books again that I own because sometimes I find myself gaining a new perspective or understanding of certain topics.

    One thing I do to save time and money is make a list of shopping and errands in a certain area. My dry cleaners, Costco, super walmart and super target are in a certain area. These businesses are a little farther away so I do all my errands and shopping at one time to save gas and time instead of making multiple trips.

    Also she means spending money not wasting it. If you are buying things you consider valuable how is that a waste of money. If people want to spend money on a good hair cut and they get value out of it. Then it's not wasting. If people got value out traveling and paying for flights then it's not wasting. I went to see my family in st Louis and Miami both when my uncle died and my mom. Trips not wasted. And I'll go down to see my grandmother who is 93 year old this winter. Not wasted money either. She won't be alive for me to say "I'll wait to I build up points on my credit card sorry granny I'll have to wait till your funeral". If you have the money and you get value out of it. It's definitely not wasting. If that was the case many people would never invest in weddings, children or wedding rings. Cause you aren't getting ROI on all those things. But there is definitely value in all those.

    Great info. Careful with some of those travel credit card monthly fees. Being handy saves a lot of money too. I bought a new house (new subdivision) that has high radon in. All the neighbors said they paid about $1,500 for their system, and I bought all my supplies for around $400 and will do it myself today.
    A guy i use to work with from CA asked me how much a deer tag cost. I told him $24 and you get a buck and doe tag. He asked me how much meat you get, and i said maybe 50 pounds, and his response was, that's a good deal, a hundred pounds for $24. I laughed and said plus the cost of the bow/gun, new camo clothes every several years, new stands every several years, gas, cost of my hunting land, etc. So Beef is way cheaper.

    • @jeffreyrowe6580
      @jeffreyrowe6580 7 месяцев назад

      I am not a hunter but my dad is. He gives us all of the meat. He has been using the same rifle for 40+ years. He hunts the land that a friend owns and does not use a tree stand. He usually gets 2 deer per year. So all he pays is the tag and butcher fees. So the cost per pound is much less. It’s free for us but since my mom passed my wife cooks dinner and usually gives him enough to last 2-3 days at a time so it works out well for both of us and is cheaper than buying at the grocery store.

    • @ehderguyyashootadeerorno2313

      @@jeffreyrowe6580 Sounds like he has a good setup. I bought 80 wooded acres in Feb this year, and I tend to buy a thousand or so dollar rifle each year. My land is 35 min away so there is gas involved. I cut up my own meat which saves some, but overall I could have bought a ton of beef for what I spent on hunting in my lifetime lol.

    Great list I agree on all you mentioned. I would add cigarettes, bottled water, extended warranties and lottery tickets. Also almost all of the addons that car dealers want to put on cars they are selling.
    I also use the library but when I want to own the book I usually buy it off Ebay or often under $5.00.
    Years ago I walk passed the kitchen of a restaurant and saw gallon jugs of wine. I had a good laugh since I NEVER order drinks at a restaurant.

    • @jeffreyrowe6580
      @jeffreyrowe6580 7 месяцев назад +1

      Those are great points. I have only bought an extended warranty one time. And that was because it gave you a store gift card for the amount of the cost of the warranty if you did not use it. I’m sure most people forget about it and never claim it. I just put it in my calendar. Got the gift card and was able to get something I needed. Other than that I can’t think of a time where I would have actually used an extended warranty. I also don’t buy insurance on my phones. I have 3 kids so there are 5 on my plan. That would be $50 a month on phone insurance. $600 a year adds up quick and so far I would have never been able to use it. So over the years I have saved thousands on that.

    Please consider a video on the new BLS consumer expenditure survey that came out last week- I look each year how our spending compares to our income cohort (by major categories)- for example we spend much less on transportation- I personally like reference numbers to force us to explain why we spend more or less than average

  • @derekhudson3462

    Interesting video. I’m guessing you get called frugal all the time. I think the better question here is “what do you spend your left over income on?” Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for maximizing 401k’s, Roth IRA’s, and putting money into brokerage accounts, but at some point you have to have a hobby/something to spend your hard earned money on. To each their own, but I would be pretty bored if I just sat at home all the time and didn’t spend any money on anything/some sort of entertainment. After all, when you retire, you’re going to have 8 extra hours each day to fill, and you’ll want to spend your hard earned money on something. I saw someone else mention this, but make sure you’re living for the now as well as the future.

    Great reminders, our largest savings has been cutting back eating out at restaurants to a bare minimum, we was spending a small fortune especially when analyzed on a monthly basis, we like giving cash or gift card for presents for younger children, adults we will send a greeting card or caring message, we prepare gourmet style coffee at home and work for pennies on the dollar, I perform a lot of my own maintenance and repairs on home and cars when possible!

    Great advice. My wife buys running shoes every 3 months. It drives me crazy but I don't say anything as she runs 5 miles a day. But she is awesome when it comes to clutter, she just hates it so other than shoes she is on board with you.

    • @jeffreyrowe6580
      @jeffreyrowe6580 7 месяцев назад

      If the average running shoe is good for around 300 miles maybe more. She is right on track buying new shoes. Consider this if she is running everyday and she runs on worn out shoes that could lead to foot, ankle, knee, and hip issues, which depending on your health insurance could end up costing you more in the long run. No pun intended.

    You sound like us. We don't waste money with anything that isn't essential. The one area that we differ is hair cuts. My wife wont' cut my hair as he is afraid of doing it wrong. I'm always uh, it grows back who cares. But she won't do it. So I found a barber where I get a haircut, beard trim and a hot towel facial massage for about $50. I trim in between but go every couple of months. She goes to her hair dresser about twice a year.
    Other than that, we simply don't spend money on useless things. I guess our wine club is kind of a waste though. We meet with friends and have a nice afternoon of wine tasting. once a month and enjoy the fellowship more than the wine. Just a fun afternoon over looking the ocean and having good conversation.

    More or less i do the same as you said, except for the credit card, i don't have.
    I don't have bad habits like smoking or drinking, not even coffee because I don't like it.
    So I don't go to cafés and because I like healthy food very rarely i will eat out.
    I don't like driving, i have a car just to move around because it's difficult without it so I am not obsessed to have the latest model, a second hand car is enough.
    Generally speaking iam frugal in my way of living.
    Last but not least, what ever is broken in the house i will repair it or replace it on my own, without calling the handyman.
    Electrical and plumbing stuffs, windows, doors, locks, shelves, broken furnitures, appliances etc, almost everything i will do it myself.
    Last month i saved up to 75% of my salary, thanks to the fact that I paid off the mortgage (was 50% of my salary) and now I can save and invest.

    Good video, very good advice! I might add one -- may step on some toes -- but consider "pets". They ain't cheap. Go ahead, have one if you want, that's fine! If Mr. Peanut or Mrs. Catnip brings you joy, or doggie is security, etc, great. But, add up the total expense, and know what you're spending. (I like nice dogs and fun cats, I just don't want to spend my $ on one.)

    If you want to travel cheap - road trips are much less than flying, even with gas prices being $5 a gallon. If you’re going to need a rental car anyway, you save on that too. Plus you get to see a lot on the way.
    Obviously it won’t work for every trip, but we’ve been hitting up the national parks and honestly it was nice to not waste 2 days at airports and flying. Just get in the car and drive there..

    It's interesting. My wife and I think basically along the same lines as you but I believe we're in the extreme minority. Most of my friends spend more, even when they earn less and have no problem carrying debt, etc. I look at any product or service as if it is asking me for my hard earned dollars which, of course, it is. I need sufficient justification to part with them so the product or service had better be a good value or otherwise worth it.

Once when deployed, it was under $10 and came with an amazing scalp massage. Then once at my first permanent duty location at the on base barber, $20 and screwed up a buzz cut.... I bought a set of clippers and have never looked back.

So sad that Americans have to pay $30-$50 for even crappy fast food. One of the many reasons why I left the U.S. The whole country is, frankly, a ripoff 😬

    not spending on x doesn't mean you are saving anything; it only means you aren't spending on x. Paying less for something or doing it for free as an alternative does mean you are saving by not spending more for the same thing. I grew up on bowl cuts. I don't buy presents because everyone else sucks🤣 The whole "experience" thing is amusing and annoying to me. Paying to have an experiene is paying for a one time use thing. Whenever I hear someone say experience, it is like hearing scraping against a chalk board: it's annoying, grating, and sounds extremely pretentious. We went to three very expensive restaurants this past couple of weeks, and everyone of them constantly overused the term "experience", I suppose to justify charging the $300-$500 per person plus mandatory idiotic 22-25% service charge. I just want to eat, not listen to a diatribe of superlatives about the ingredients. I mean, the alterantive to a wonderful, fresh arugula would be the restaurant had a choice to serve me a crappy bunch of rotted arugula? Paying for experiences normally include folks in this social media age spending an undue amount of time and effort to document the experience to later publicize the experience to demonstrate the wondersousness of the experience. So basically, people waste money on experiences which are really intended for other people's consumption. I have terabytes of photos I took that I will never actually look at again, so I've just stopped taking photos during an "experience" because I would literally be spending money for an experience to show other people that their life sucks, so who am I really spending money on an experience for? The tip/service thing in the US has gotten out of control. Stupid cities like DC allow restaurants to include a fee now that they say isn't a tip, even though it is a tip, because it covers increasing minimum income transition. As if the restaurant is going to save the money to pay their employees, rather than just increasing the prices by the same percentage to actually pay their employees.

    While I completely understand where you’re coming from, this may be an aggressively joyless approach to saving money for some people. I think that there is a subset of savers who get joy from extreme frugality, and that’s probably a great life hack for them. And for other people, they would actually like to get their haircut by a professional and not feel like a bad person for making that choice. I don’t think that you’re suggesting that everyone emulate your lifestyle choices, but I do think it’s worth calling out for those in the audience who may need to hear it that they are different ways to achieve your goals. As long as you’re hitting your monthly savings target, and practicing good, general financial hygiene, please don’t hesitate to do some guilt free spending on things that bring you some joy or may make your life, and your family’s life, easier.

      Get it brother. The rule is simple IF you can afford it, buy it as long as your future planning is in order. Money ain't gonna go with you. The real problem with ppl is discipline. Collecting all these millions aint gonna do any good when you can't even drag your arse when you are 70 unless you are in good shape and that again goes back to my point of discipline. So bottom line - IF you can afford it, get it. I got mine at 34 and don't regret a thing. Many would say you should have invested that money and my logic remains same. I got enough shit in order per year for future. I save enough and rest I am gonna have fun with. Not gonna live thinking abt shit like haircut 😂.

    Erin has turned to a debbie downer hate to see it. Erin at the middle of year was great to watch covering things about spending and budgets. But now shes falling in the trap of what other finance experts fall in. Bragging about what they do, telling others how they are making mistakes and it should apply to their finances. You were in the middle now we are just at the extreme. Extremes are bad. I know people will feel this is a great advice. But its really not. People know what they are spending on money on. And erin already said she doesn't go to concerts. People have to quit thinking they are smart and getting a value out of thing sand wanted to save a buck at every aspect in their live. Its life enjoy it. I have a plan on being a million dollars but im 45 and i surealy have had so much fun in 20s and 30s. Two military branches, partied, drank, danced. And now my bank account looks great, my 457b looks great, my hsa is going smooth. But it doesn't give me the feeling like dancing all night with a woman who can dance (i said who can dance). Nor does it give me the feeling of going to the pool and hitting double backflips. Nor does it give me the feeling of doing backflips off walls or on concrete. As well as the experience of all the weapons i shot in the Army. Saving money is great for the future. And i think gambling is one of the worst things you can do, its never on any of these list. Neither is affairs. Like these list really aren't wasting money. Its just if you want to become a millionaire and have that kind of wealthy success you can't enjoy all those things at once unless you are on a super rich salary and even then you wont keep it for long. But these videos are suggesting that their way is the right way and the way you doing it is wrong and a mistake. Its not, when i go to watch the olympics next summer i want you to win that gold i don't care how much is in your 401k or 457b. I honestly don't care about your credit score no i care about you brining America home the most golds. Bonnie Blair is a legend to me, Bill gates is not. Coco Gauf is more interesting to me and shes only 19 elon musk will ever be. And im sure her father spent alot of money getting her in those tennis camps. Same with tiger woods dad. Its gotten so bad her and bo from money guys are talking bad on home decoration. Like somehow having pictures of your family and making your own home yours and not living like witness protection is wasting your money. The advice in the financial genre has gone from "here are the secrets to be wealthy" to criticizing people for spending money on things and telling them on how they should live their lives day to day. You people are married and worried about you finances and probably in by 10 pm at night. Vegas is open 24 hours and makes billions of dollars. There are many ways to make money without these so called list being mistakes and living your live like Monk the TV show. Why don't you guys do studies on what gambling has done for divorces and finances and stop convincing people that they are making mistakes with their money. If they want to use credit cards and pay 20% interest next month, let them. You told them not to do it, move on to a new subject.
