Sawyer had a knack of using simple ingredients to great effect. His patterns have certainly stood the test of time. I often tie on a PTN when struggling to catch - remarkable how often it works!
Yep, he was a poor man that worked hard, there is a film of him tying on youtube, what I notice was his hands, hard physical laborers hands! he used inexpensive readily available materials, such as pheasant! A lot of pheasant shooting was being done in season where he lived! As for the PT, a size 18 is one of my go to nymphs, I tie it the way he did and in the American version!
Barry- I know you probably haven't watched this one in a while, but I'm researching some of Sawyer's river nymphs and I read in a Taff Price book that he wrapped the fiber body and the rib together, effectively hiding the rib. On this pattern and the Swedish. In this one you did wrap the rib after the body. Have you ever come across any literature stating how Sawyer did these? Probably not a big difference in the end result, but it did make me curious. Thanks! -Matt
Hi Matt, good hear from you. I am having lunch at the fly fishers club in London today so I'll do a little research while i'm there and get back to you.
Boy that guy was ahead of his time. Great job. Tight lines Barry, thanks for sharing.
You got that right Stan!

@@Thefeatherbender Thanks Barry. No rush at all. I was just a bit curious. 👍
DMagnifique, regrette d'avoir été assez bête pour ne pas y avoir pensé. Merci du partage
Barry, did you use a size 8 for demostration or is that a common size for the geo-location? In Coloado I rarely use a nymph large than 12-14 ish.
Hi Dan, no its quite common here to fish with nymphs up to a size 8, especially in still waters.
Thanks Master.
