I saw this musical in the spring of 1985 on a class trip to New York City, I managed to get an autograph from Desiree Coleman who played Doris and it was just a wonderful moment in time for my 9-year-old self. Great times!!!
I share your enthusiasm I went when I was much younger a pre-teen I saw mama I want sing too‼️🙏🏽🤩The theater is now renamed El TEATRO AT EL MUSEO DEL BARRIO NEW YORK, NY‼️ I just saw the 40th anniversary performance‼️ It was still so amazing‼️😍 I still have my old program signed by the whole cast from 1985‼️❤️🔥🗣🎙🎶🎵
An unforgettable moment in my life - seeing this musical. Seeing Doris play her own mother. I am making it a central scene in the novel I’m writing about race and class in the time I came of age in upstate NY - 1967-1988.
My first play I ever saw an Awesome play with a wonderful story line!!! The Cast sang all they wanted and not to mention Mrs. Desiree Coleman-Jackson's Angelic vocal performance!!!!!!! #CLASSIC PLAY.!!!!!
I saw a matinee at the Heckshire Theater on April 26, 1985. Doris was played by Deidre Hicks (now known as D'Atra Hicks). All I can say is, I see why they eventualy chose Miss Hicks for the lead role. That woman sang the paint off the walls, and the plaster off the ceiling.
I never saw this play when it came out back in the day but my cousin did and she would always go around the house trying to sing the title song...she sounded horrible. Smh lol

Many people don't realize that this is what gave Tyler Perry his ideas to do black gospel plays many years later.
Yes D'Atra is a vocal BEAST! Her voice is unique and her lung game is FIRE!
I remember seeing this in San Francisco in the mid-80s. I was about 8 or 9 years old. It was the first play I had ever seen live.
I saw this play when I was nine years old in 1983. It was a great show and heartfelt at the time I saw it at Saenger Theatre in New Orleans.
I'm 13 and this was the best play I've seen so far. I've been to Broadway shows and mama I want to sing was better
I had the plasure to join "mama" in Germany , it was awesome!!!
I saw this at the beacon theater as a class trip in NYC.
Loved it back then!

Or is Doris Troy at 4:05? Either way I am just in awe of this woman. This story is HER'S!
At 1:29 is that Doris Troy? The inspiration for this amazing musical?

Black buffoonery at its worst. Horrible strained whistle notes.
Troll...
And you are missy?
I agree. Sounds a mess.
