Damn, the author is really hitting us where it hurts huh? She's probably the most relatable character so far, her emotional reactions to the negative comments and the feeling like your being cornered while the whole world is against you is too real bruh.

The scene of the reality show `Terrace house` went like this: Hana tipped a participant's hat off their head for ruining her (really expensive) wrestling costume. And that made people retardedly mad. Throughout the season's episodes she was constantly made to look as a villain and a bad person. These scenes were, of course, all staged, and the producers wanted her to, originally, smack the actor but she refused. Purposefully crafting the narrative to make her look bad, all for ratings.
The internet still went crazy until she couldn't handle it anymore. The comments shown in the Oshi no ko episode are one to one with comments from twitter and instagram that have since been deleted. The situation is pretty similar, which makes this episode so much darker than it already appears. Knowing something could happen in reality and knowing it actually did happen are different things...
And the production team, much like shown in this episode, didn't clarify the scene was made up, nor tried to help Hana. I believe only after the fact, the other participants had to say and expose how bad the production was, and how much they pressured them to create these personas and scenes, even editing in an specific manner without any care for their image.
If anybody wants to know more about this, on the chapter 25 of Oshi no Ko's fan translation by Ai's Fanclub, they do a really good job to summarize everything in a real respectful manner, more than I did here. It's at the end of the chapter. The ending of chapter 25 is exactly like on the anime, so you can check it without getting any spoilers. The chapter was written a month later if I'm not mistaken, and it's believed by most people that it was to shed more light to this whole situation.
The good thing that came out of this is that the law regarding cyberbullying was changed to a harsher one in the second semester of 2022. Before you could do all that and only pay 50 dollars of fines, no jail time which was basically a free pass to do it. Now it's 5000$ + up to a year of jail. I believe her mom was the one that leaded the whole push for the new law.
Another thing. On the subreddit r/manga, on the thread to chapter 25 of the Oshi no Ko manga, you can find comments with the links to a bunch of archived threads of the r/TerraceHouse subreddit, and even there, outside of japan's celebrity sphere and cultural context, people were being absolutely fricking degusting, it's bizarre to read. I'm not gonna cite anything there, because it's honestly hard to read knowing what happened.
What's bizarre to me is that all of this happened very recently. Like, WHAT THE FUCK!!!

The scene around 2:46 where Akane says 'I am a vegetarian' and grills meat for everyone. I think the English translation is incorrect. In Japanese, she says "syouzinnnomi," which is a Japanese Buddhist concept that translates to something like "Pursuit of personal growth" or "Dedication to self-improvement."
In Japan, there has always been a society where seniority rules, and this is particularly prominent in the entertainment industry and the theatre company where she belongs. Grilling meat for others, as Akane does, is a prime example of this, and there are other instances where the younger pour beer for the elder. Of course, this is an outdated custom, and in recent years, it has been widely discussed on the internet and elsewhere.
In other words, this scene symbolizes how hardworking and serious-minded Akane is (though one could also say she is not a worldly person.) and serves as an important foreshadowing for the tragedy that occurs later.
P.S. I apologize if my explanation is difficult to understand. I'm still learning English. If the dialogue in that scene carried such connotations, please let me know. It would be educational for me.

so I did a little search on google, shojin ryori is the traditional dining style of Buddhist monks that is generally eaten by vegetarians in Japan, so it seems the translation is not wrong

    • @claire5113
      @claire5113 Год назад +8

@@ky8252 Hi Thank you for your comment.
I have re-watch the anime and re-read the original comic once again. And indeed, she used the term "shojin-no-mi," which is a word used to refer to people, and it is different from what you are saying, "shojin-ryori." Both terms undoubtedly have their origins in Japanese Buddhism, but "shojin-no-mi" only carries the meaning of "making efforts" and does not imply being a vegetarian. Additionally, the term "shojin" in "shojin-ryori" refers to restraining desires for food, practicing frugality in meals, and undergoing spiritual training. In other words, it adheres to Buddhist teachings by refraining from indulgent feasting, abstaining from animal products, and consuming only vegetables and grains, thereby regulating one's own desires regarding food. And in modern times, this cuisine seems to be served often on specific occasions such as the night before the day of the funeral or the Obon which is the most important Buddhist festival in Japan. It takes place in July. It is a time when Buddhists remember people in their families who have died.
In short, while the etymology of the term "shojin" is the same for both words, their meanings are different. I don't know why their translation became "vegetarian," but as a Japanese person, I can only see this translation as incorrect. I have never used the word "shojin-no-mi" Akane used in the sense of "I am a vegetarian" and heard anyone say it in that context.

”精進の身”: "syou-zin-no-mi" (This is "shojin no mi")
"精進あるのみ": ”syou-zin-a-ru-no-mi” (This is almost synonymous with ”精進の身”. In my experience, this phrase is used more often in everyday life.)
"精進料理": "syou-zin-ryou-ri" (This means Japanese Buddism vegetarian cuisine)
note: Japanese sentence is indicated with Japanese pronunciation by a letter of the alphabet, called Romaji text in Japan.
When entering text on a PC (or even on a smartphone for some people), Japanese people use romaji.
For example, if I want to type "の", I type "no".
I hope it will help you.

ngl i love how they're able to actually implement social media in a way that feels so real. the internet is going to internet, just like it always has. and i love that they're so unapologetic with the no filter of trying to explain how the internet is. it's a shitshow. there's good parts, but a lot of it is vile and hateful. people spew BS takes at the drop of a hat, and most of them don't really care what they say is bad. half of the time people just do it just to say something bad. and the people who truly get hurt are the people who can't take the heat and can't stand the useless, and cruel insults.
the dude who mentioned how all of the insults turned so sexual, that's such a real thing for especially women celebrities and it's so upsetting to see that often if people have no actual trait to criticize, they immediately go calling them sluts despite their sex life being completely unrelated to the conversation at hand. i really respect oshi no ko for this authentic portrayal. we all know it's happening, but a lot of us don't like paying attention to it

Este episodio realmente no me produjo algo grande hasta la parte del final.
Ese momento donde te ponen a Akane subida a la barandilla y empieza el ending me pone los pelos de punta y ya encima el mensaje al final del episodio me da un pequeño escalofrió.

Since this episode I've long since fell on the "Terrace house" rabbit hole. This episode is tough and dark, darker than I thought it was when I watched it, but necessary. Holy shit man.

You can tell people still haven't gotten over Ai, Ai's death raised the stakes of the story to the point of where the story could have had Akane actually die if it weren't for Aqua. Worst part is, as everyone else will tell you, real life wasn't so fortunate.

Of course, Twitter in its current state is barely moderated at all which makes it worse.

      @@HanabiraKage Thanks for the reply.
My concern is that it changes the meaning of what Akane is saying in this scene.
The word "精進の身(Sho-jin no mi)" means I am willing to do chores because I am still a novice", but when translated as vegetarian, it means "I am a vegetarian, so I don't eat meat".
There is a similar term, "Sho-jin Ryo-ri" (meatless cooking), so perhaps they confused it.
