In 1927, Maharajah Jagatjit Singh had ruled his state of Kapurthala for fifty years. Lavish parties were given in honor of his jubilee which were attended by the principal maharajahs of Punjab, Kashmir and Rajasthan, as well as personalities from the English crown such as the viceroy Lord Irwin. In addition to entertainments such as garden parties, the main ceremony was that of the durbar in which princes and vassals paid homage to the Maharajah.
