That was a great review and you managed to express many of my thoughts about this book when I read it last year. I thought it was brilliant but deeply uncomfortable and I think you are exactly right about being made to feel so close to the character and action which was an amazing thing to achieve. I could never say I 'enjoyed' it but as a reading experience it was amazing - in fact after finishing it I could not pick up another book for two weeks after, and my mind still goes back to it.
Exactly. I feel my interpretation of the star rating system breaks down with books like this - how could one not give five stars to a book which so affects the reader, but I gave it four because I didn't love it!
A really great review on a difficult book , one l often thought of reading but this review as it helps me understand why l don't want too Thank you and well done !
Your story about how you came to read this book is just the best! On more than one occasion, I have purchased a book because I (mistakenly) thought I remembered a recommendation. It is always an adventure when you realize that you have made a mistake, but you feel that karma has somehow led you to this book.
haha, misremembered recommendations are the worst. I got a book, fully convinced the Poptimist made a full lenght video review about it and that he liked it. I didn't like the book and when I wanted to see what he liked about it it turned out I had imagined that whole thing, he never read the book!
Emer O'Toole was one of my teachers at Concordia. Have yet to read her book but this book I'm reading in our new course and it was pretty confusing at first but you get used to it as you keep going and you learn to understand it. Very good review on this difficult book to read through writing and themes wise.
I've never been interested in reading this and I don't think you have changed my mind. Haha :') Does not sound like something I want to spent time with.

Agreed, it kept my thoughts busy after finishing as well. It was hard to let go easily and move on to something else.

Thanks for these kind words. Also glad I could help you make this decision.

So true.

That is perfectly fine, I'm not sure I would've if I had known what I was getting myself into.
Great review! I just can’t help it, I hate this book so much!
Thanks, and I can totally understand this. I think I appreciate it for what it does more than like it.
