DC Comics new Batman creative team is freaking insane!

I think the best era of Batman was with Denny O'Neil as editor, with Doug Moench, Chuck Dixon and Alan Grant writing the Bat titles. Nothing will ever top that in my opinion.
Absolutely!
Yes, I have to agree. I quit DC end of last year. I'm almost at the end with Marvel.
Agreed. Denny O'Neil was the one who created the modern dark batman in the early 70s as a writer alongside Frank Robbins and artists Neal Adams and Irv Novick. He truly understood what Batman is meant to be.😊
Can't argue with that at all. A couple years ago, I received a gift subscription to DC's online catalog and went back to read all Batman titles as far as around 1966 and it blew my mind to see the steady decline in quality when the mid-2000s hit, and forget about the 2010s.
I didn't love Denny as a writer but I always thought he was a top-notch editor and I agree that the writers you named all had excellent runs on Batman. I just wish we had more writers and editors of that caliber today.
Jim Lee is my favorite artist 😁
Let Jim Lee make comics again! Replace him with someone who has more business sense
Nah, his level is nowhere near what it was in Hush
He could have been dropping books for a long while now. No one is holding him back. He just didn’t want to do it.
What exactly is Jim Lee busy with? I can’t see what exactly he does at DC. He should just be an artist.
Absolutely right !
Jim Lee will probably last a single story arc.
single issue
Half an issue
No issue
12 issues at most... 🤞🏻😏
The last 2 times he was announced: Immortal Men - 1 or 2 issues. Before that: Suicide Squad - a few pages of 4-6 issues.
Based on this trendline, he draws 6 pages for 1 or 2 issues and is done.
we've seen this before. 🙄 he comes back, he draws 4-5 (late) issues, and then dips out. this is just to bait fans to pick up sales for a few months.
So is this a story they want to tell, or are they doing it because they were offered a dumptruck full of cash each?
If it's the former, it could be great. If the latter, it's gonna be Dark Knight 2.
As long as Zdarsky is gone, I'll take it. Lee needs to step down. His heart is in drawing not being a president over DC.
My wife picked up a Creepshow issue and asked me if Chip Zdarsky is a good writer. By most accounts, no, but these are little self contained stories. Later she told me that no, he's not a good writer.
His heart is not even in drawing anymore. His level is nowhere near it was in Hush
@@bradhogue2029 I strongly disagree, I admit that his Batman was not what was expected, it was decent but not memorable, however what he did in Daredevil was incredible. So, while no at the same level of this team, he is not a bad or great, but he is good.
@@owenharrison761 I haven't personally read anything by him. Doesn't sound like he's for me. I did spend $4 on Creepshow and my wife said it wasn't worth it. It's subjective and if he wrote some Daredevil you enjoy, more power to him and to you!
@@owenharrison761 his batman is atrocious.
Been a comic fan my entire life and Jim Lee is the GOAT to me. Like most teenage boys chasing girls i fell out of comics in high school. When i got back from boot camp i was in my early twenties with some cash in my pocket. I was a fan of smallville and heard it was based on Loeb and Sale's Superman for all seasons which had released while i was out of comics. So i went to a shop to buy it. Employee there said the writer is on Batman with Jim Lee and there's some buzz on the book. Issue 610 was out at that point but he sold me 608 and 609 at a good price as they were already going for well over cover price. I thought i was going for a one time purchase, but thanks to that Hush run ( and Y the Last man if im being honest) here i am over 20 years later grabbing books every Wednesday. Also led to me owning the best comic covers of all time in Batman issue 608 2nd print and issue 612, in color and black & white sketch
The fact that Jim has been drawing the comics already is incredible. It’s about time DC actually does something fans are interested in.
That’s exactly my first thought. There’s no way Jim will stay on schedule. But here’s hoping 🤞🏽
How about Jim Lee finish his unfinished projects, not be lazy DC president
Great move by DC. The Batman comics really need this
The last ten years have done as much damage to Batman as Denny O'Neil did to build him up. I love Jim Lee as an artist, he was the best artist in comics throughout my childhood from X-men to Wildstorms. But it's going to take some brilliant writing to fix the mess that the Batman mythos is in.
bruh that thumbnail is nightmare fuel
I was pretty close to dropping out of comics again. hanging-on by a thread, really. but I will definitely hop back in for this! thanks for the heads-up!
As long there is no Damian, then I'm in.
I just want less to none Batfamily melodrama, no more Failsafe shenanigans, and just Batman doing his crime fighter stuff.
Yo, what's your problem with Damian?
He is not Batwoman, or Red Hood, or stupid Signal, or some Lucius Fox child, Damian is cool.
Honestly, at this point they need to relaunch the entire DC universe and erase everything so far.
Twelve issues of Lee and Loeb would be cool.
For however long it lasts, Jim’s art will be incredible. The guy doesn’t half ass anything he puts to paper and his work has improved even when his previous work sits comfortably among legendary status. He has never been complacent with his skills.
An ongoing might not be a comfortable format for him and in all seriousness, I hope he doesn’t hurt himself. He had a hand injury a year or two ago and I’d hate him to push himself like he was as young as when he did X-men or even Hush.
Hope the writing is a bit more polished and planned out than Hush and All Star. When Jim is a part of a book, he’s never the weak link, take that as you will…
This is good news? Another step back for the caped crusader. More bait and switch, brother.
This is a Jim Lee mini series, that he will still be late on. He will not last beyond the first arc. It will also be $5.99 an issue.
1:21 Well since Jim really doesn’t do anything as CEO he has lots of time to draw a comic.
Jajajajaja true
Nah Wes, Damian still exist.
Maybe it's just me but I feel like Jeph Loebs best days are behind him.
Fact IS even his worst days are probably better thatn most of current writers work.
@@samokuma9596 debatable. He wrote Ultimates 3 and Ultimatum; two of the worst 2000s stories ever. They both revole around incest.
Totally 😐
Also Jim Lee's. His level is nowhere near what it was in Hush
@@devanbarrios9216his DC work was always better than Marvel
I'm not sure I share your excitement. Yes Lee and Loeb are legends for their work in the past, but let's not forget that DC has taken the overall direction it has over the past few years while UNDER Lee. So he's coming back to a monthly to tell (draw) Batman in the current swiss-cheese of a universe? Sorry, they've made me cynical and skeptical at best.
Despite his Batman descent from space unscathed the worst thing Chip did was really work with Tini. That and how many freaking DC events ran in the middle of his run? 😑
I love Loeb and Lee! This will be awesome!
What is this really good for?
two issues before it goes off the rails? Three?
Mr Lee cannot produce monthly output
this is fools gold
man Im excited for this team to be back! Hopefully Lee can keep up w the schedule
Are the last several years going to be retconned? Probably not, but we'll see of they can do anything worthwhile. It honestly can't be much worse. Bringing in creators who actually know how it's supposed to look is a good thing (I wish Alan Grant and the late Norm Breyfogle were still around, as far as Batman creative teams) but the problem is the last several years of continuity. If they infuse it with any of that, it's going to suck.
Ugh, Loeb is a 100 years old, and has done nothing good SINCE the last batman. Jim Lee is exciting though
Hell yeah. Looking forward to jumping back into the main series.
I had until recently never read Batman, I just cleared Hush TPB as my first book in the last two weeks and loved it so this is great news for me.
6 issues of jim lee is better than most things these days lmao
Not the current Jim Lee. His work hasn't been great since 2011. His level is nowhere near what it was in Hush.
Jeph Loeb, now this will make me check out the main series, don't really care that much about the artist as long as he's decent.
Haven't read Batman in 2 years. That would be the time to jump in. I'm excited!
So basically Jim Lee needs to get off his ass and do something to help the company he has tanked. I'll still buy it but Jim Lee should be doing other things than drawing
Thank god, Chip has been horrible. Honestly he’s been pretty bad since he started writing about Daredevils white privilege.
Don’t recall that ever being a plot point in either part of his run.
@@CoreyAdolfi I think it was issue 28. When he was in jail. There was a black prisoner lecturing daredevil about his white privilege.
First PKJ on Batman & robin, and now freaking loeb & Lee?!
It’s been so long since I’ve read Batman regularly, so hats off to dc for getting my attention.
Whatever they’re working on needs to be the next classic!
I'll take Waid and Samnee's Batman and Robin series over those. It's probably going to be the best Batman in a while. And no, I do not care about Waid's politics, he's still one of the best.
This is great news! And I'm sure Jim Lee won't be around too long on this book. but that's okay because if Jeph Loeb sticks around for a "long" run that's a big win for Batman fans. Loeb can write rings around Zdarsky. Batman will start acting like "The" Batman again. Hopefully Bruce will leave behind all the self-doubts and become the the "world's greatest detective" again. And bash a few skulls along the way to solving incredible mysteries!
my only concern with this is how long will it last ?
Definitely exciting news... but... knowing how DC operates I have multiple questions and concerns.
Is Jim Lee still able to deliver quality interior art? His covers in recent years have not been great.
How long does that particular run last?
What version of Batman are we going to get?
What is the follow-up creative team?
Jim Lee and Jeph Loeb coming back?
Sure Jan. 😏
Kinda depends on which Jeph Loeb we’re getting. Long Halloween Loeb is great. Ultimatum Loeb is somewhat less so.
I would say Ultimatum Loeb is an enormous outlier invisible career. He tried being edgy and it didn't work.
Yessssss!!!
The best new IS not that Loeb and Lee are coming back (this IS a great New) but that zdarsky IS leaving.
As long Morrison trash take has no consequences on it then I'm definitely buying that.
seems like your going to hate the dcu.
What do you mean?
@@gabrielcarrasco9078 some of the Dcu projects will be inspired by Grant Morrison works
To be fair, Batman has been buried with a shit ton of cross over events in the recent years. It is kind of reminiscent of the era when Dennis O'Neil retired as the Batman editor and the brand of Batman almost got completely destroyed by low quality events after events, until Grant Morrison came in and brought it back on track.
I still have faith in Zdarsky's writing. His Avengers: Twilight is darn good. Much like G Willow Wilson found her footing in the ongoing Poison Ivy after the very mediocre run of WW, Zdarsky should be given something more akin to his style: street level character without too much cross-overs.
Grant Morrison's run was garbage. He project his mommy issues on Talia, made Joker edgy and created his self-insert Damian.
@@Dion1605x ok so according to you which Batman run is great, other than Joeh Loeb and Tim Sale?
Zdarsky run was quite disappointing so far.
@@Dion1605xWRONG
@@Dion1605x It was unreadable and full of pretentiousness, just like everything Morrison writes.I encourage everyone to check it out: Morrison isn’t really an expert on the Batman universe; he just lifted stories from the 80s anthology The Greatest Batman Stories Ever Told published by Titan. He clearly hasn’t done much research.
I'd try it if it was out of current continuity, maybe like Sylvestri's Batman & Joker. I just don't care and it's hard to get excited about an initiative Waid is part of.
Waid is still one of the best lmao, people care too much about politics, they are the same as the wokesters
I've never read Batman Hush.
The only comics I've ever read by Loeb are...
...The Ultimates 3 and Ultimatum.
Errr...
Only DC Loeb I've read is Long Halloween and it's amazing. Some of Loeb's earlier Marvel work is good too. He did some Cable issues, wrote some issues of Age of Apocalypse. Wrote a good 5 issue mini after Civil War ended but he hasn't been writing a ton lately because apparently Marvel didn't want him to write when he was working on TV for them.
A lot of excitement for "limited backgrounds."
Jeph Loeb better unemployed.
so Jim Lee doesn't actually have creative control at DC then, otherwise he could've just assigned himself to Batman instead having to use leverage to be able to work on it
Wait, is this really happening? Jim Lee will do one or two arcs I am sure but if this is true, I can't wait for the deluxe hardcover or absolute!
I’m a little disappointed the new team isn’t entirely new, but it’s Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee, a classic Batman writer and artist team. Can’t wait to see what they’ll be cooking up and how long their run lasts
Yes but Lee is nowhere near as good as he was during Hush
@@MaxP_88 That’s kinda true. During Hush, it looked like each issue kept improving from the last since Jim knew how to draw Batman now and got better. Of course I haven’t seen a lot of his recent works so not sure if it is better or worse
It's Still going to be A Long Decade till Batman goes Public Domain but these people will certainly give the Dark Knight a moment of Lucidity in his Terminal Decline.
If this does end up happening I think the best case scenario is we get Jim Lee for 12 issues and the Jorge comes back to the book as the ongoing artist
Who in the name of sanity thinks involving tini howard in anything is a good move?
In the Catwoman subreddit some people said that she has friends in high places at DC.
It's a relief that she is no longer involved in Catwoman
@@TheBatman39 I’ve been trying to read it, and it’s incomprehensible how bad it actually is - but then you could argue that I did it to myself, because I knew how bad she was from her Excalibur run.
More exited for Rob liefeld returning to youngblood than
Jim Lee returning to Batman comics
Loeb and Lee? Back on Batman? I'll take it!! After 10 straight years of the worst back-to-back Batman runs ever, we need this.
Because he’s working with Jeph Loeb this time. I really want to believe that Jim will deliver on 12 issues in 12 months. Back when Hush first started everyone was weighing against them making it. But they delivered.
Even though that was over 20 years ago when Jim had a lot less on his plate. I’m going to choose to be optimistic about it this time.
i know my brother got to report this... BUTTTTTTTT ...... my Face is twisted Bro... give me 8 issues back to back LOL
It does sound exciting. But immediately my skepticism backed by cynicism kicks in and questions and doubts start forming.
Is it for the long haul? Is it just one story? Is it bait and switch and issue three will have a different team on? Can I trust DC to deliver and not pull the rug from underneath?
But questions and doubts aside, this may convince me to pick up a new issue of Batman. It's been a while.
Jim Lee returning to draw Batman will be like a mini-series. Unless he has at least 6 issues already done he will likely not make it to 12 without being late. I am excited about it - more because of Jeph Loeb - I really enjoyed Hush and pretty much all Loeb Batman.
NOOO Do not start the numbering over!!!
If this will be the new batman creative team i feel bad for jorge Jimenez cause if his contract still is in, where do you put the guy? Maybe they'll put him on AC after waid's weekly run or world's finest cause after dan mora left for it's been a quality drop
Or hear me out……..we build up new talent………….
Exciting news, hope it's true.
we already have a Batman #1 this month. we don't need another one. we need to stop catering to the numerologists. Jim Lee swooping into save Batman seems like a retread to me. somehow I don't feel so excited about Jim Lee as I did 20 years ago. I'd rather see some new talent
Honestly Wes, this is definitely cool news but a little scary. You know in comics it can be really hard to go back to something you did before.
What's the difference between a miniseries and Jim Lee working on the main book and leaving after 6 issues?
Wes, I don't understand why you are so excited about this. Jim Lee's history on Batman have never been a positive one. "Hush" was incredibly underwhelming to say the least, the storyline was weak and only served as a vehicle so Jim Lee can do pretty splash pages of every Batman character. And his collaboration with Frank Miller in All Star Batman and Robin is one of the biggest pile of crap I ever read. Jim Lee is a great splash page/cover artist but not a good story telling artist IMO. This just reeks of desperation from DC and Lee, due to poor sales across the board.
Lee’s work on All Star Batman and Robin was phenomenal. It’s Miller’s writing that was atrocious.
Loeb and Lee back?! 😮
Wes or someone on the team has been having a little too much fun with AI, haha. These thumbnails are wild.
I’m installing the browser app that makes thumbnails disappear.
This calls for desperation Jeoph Loeb with Jim Lee means we are desperate for cash
Now i am interested in batman and robin with new batman creative team
Awesome
Desperate Comics?
Naw I’m good
Jim Lee? So 6 months between issues?
I loved that creative team, it's too bad DC comics is trash at this point, so I'm going to have to pass.
Hi Wes! I was blown away by the news! However, do you see a bait an switch here? Your insight. BTW, wher are you in the Philippines? Greetings from Meycauayan City Bulacan.
If Jim actually tries, this could be good. Unpopular opinion maybe, Loeb is easily in my top five favorite comics writers. Not just for stuff like Hush and Long Halloween, but for my all time favorite DC comic, Superman/Batman.
Jim Lee has a lot of responsibilities as DC President… that he has basically abdicated. I guess Zaslav decided he finally needed to get some return on all that money they’ve wasted on him?
Too little, too late.Nothing has weight anymore. Anything done will just be retconned or multiversed. The only things comic books had going for them was good art and continuity. Good stories happened but even they were not absolutely necessary. Comic books didn't shoot themselves in the foot they amputated both legs.
Yeah... No. Not falling for it. I'm sorry you are, Wes. But I hope you're right.
Hot take, I think Jimenez is better than current Jim Lee, sadly Joker War was the best thing he had to draw and his later arcs just got worse and worse. We know Loeph will give Lee all kinds of cool stuff to draw. Jeph is very good at writting to the artist strenght, Hush , the Sale books, Superman/Batman for McGiness and a Supergirl story for Turner.
Jorge Jimenez and Dan Mora or Daniel Sampere and Clay Man, both with Tomeu Morey colors would be AWESOME art teams, they have similar styles at top tier level.
Why delay the current run just because of a new team ? Shouldn’t you finish it sooner ? To get that going
This is indeed great news. The sooner chip zdarksy is gone the better
I’m excited for the return but how long will it last?
Jim Lee has already drawn Batman.
Let's try something new. Jim Lee drawing Lobo. Jim Lee drawing Justice Society of America. Jim Lee drawing Hawkgirl.
How much does the name Jim Lee move books? Let's find out by putting him on something other than Batman or Superman. But especially Batman.
I don't know, Wes, for me the good news is that Jim Lee was fired and that Jeff Loep was the president of DC, that would be good news.
Cool but will the woke it up?
I call bullshit. Lee is president of DC comics. He cannot do two things at once. Run a company AND draw and write a comic
I like Jim Lee, but more as a cover artist. While I thought Hush was beautifully drawn, I think he draws every character pretty generic. Many characters look the same. I rather read with art that is special and help the story emotionwise (Tim Sale for example) than reading art that is technically beautiful but doesnt do much for the story. I would love Xavier Dorison as a writer. Thats what I would to recommend them. Loeb is great though
I picked up the new Creature Commando's book.
It's ok, I guess.
This should have been the All Star Batman and Robin team like 20 years ago. I love both of them but they should be retired now. Also not a fan of chip zdarsky and what he did I'm Batman the Knight, like how that was allowed by DC is insane and he should be kicked out of DC forever
Its probably going to line up with 950
This legit? It would rock to have Jeph Loeb as the main ongoing writer on Batman, that could actually save the title!
Lol aren’t y’all getting your panties in a twist prematurely?
I bet anything Jim Lee will do half an issue or 2 and then he’s back to sitting at his cushy desk, making gobs of money doing fuck all and doing g commissions for millionaires.
