    Both Rebekah, who is biracial, and Emily, who is bisexual, pass for an identity that is not their own. Often mistaken for the wrong race or sexuality, the two work through what it means to have "passing" privilege as well as coping with the feelings of not being seen on their own terms. Though the two are inadvertently passing, there is a long history of people intentionally passing in the United States.

      not all mixed people can pass for anything other than black. some of them are even in the medium brown skinned tones and can have a little ethnic trait or so.its mainly depending on parents race composition. people pass .
      People do change even if it takes time or it is sometimes based upon a percentage starting at 76 percent for white in old Louisiana
      I have heard of a 25 percent for some other ethnic people or tribal affairs but you must be legal recorded and approved. I have heard it's quite strict and difficult to prove for even people who belong

If we want true american equality the #WhitePeople need to start check black on their census forms and maybe until we get more white people on board, more black people start checking white. I'm mixed with white and black like the first woman, white mom and black dad, and I can pass for "just white" too, though people often think I'm Latina/Middle Eastern/North African/etc. because I look ambiguous... I don't want to invalidate anyone's experience BUT if you're like me and you don't VISIBLY look black, I personally think it's wrong to walk around saying "I'm black" rather than "I'm mixed" or "I'm part black." I feel like it contributes to the erasure of people who have African phenotypical features, and invalidates what visibly black people go through in this country... personally I refer to myself as mixed, because I AM mixed and I can't ignore the white side of myself or the black side

      The word "mixed" is fairly new. Its flooded our psyche in the 2000's. Black people know other black people. We classified ourselves very fair-skinned to very dark skinned.
      The first woman just look like a fair-skinned black woman. Black people come in over 35 hues of brown. Her son will one day have children those genes will one day reach back and blow everyone's mind.

    Jim crow laws have impacted the way people think about race. The only way you can be black, white or any other race is if both parents are the same race. Otherwise, you're biracial. If you choose to identify with only half of your parents that's your choice but it's not fair to the parent you leave out.

Always have to scream at your face what they are but then they'll also cry about not bringing race and sexual orientation into things when that's all they ever talk about. Yes, the USA might have been built on race but it's time to let go on both sides if you guys ever want to see real change.

    I am autistic, but I pass as neurotypical. As a child I didn`t but I learned to fake a lot and while my social understanding is not intuitiv I learned it in a more analytical way. People treat me different now. They believe that I am capable of something, they see me for my strengths and not my „weaknesses“. I rarely come out as autistic because I am afraid they will see me as weak and don`t trust me to take over responsibility anymore. But the stress of not getting the help and the accomodations I need makes me very depressed.

    A self identity is human nature. Even though we are all equal on many levels of consciousness we are individuals. The problem with individual identity is our egos convince us that "my identity is right but your identity is wrong". We are all human, the same. Many race's and cultures and biological diversity. The important factor is how well we embrace one another.

    • @kristingallo2158

      Actually we are all just souls in random bio suits. Our egos are basically useless. Ego is the part of the human that is represented as Satan. The ego demands control/validation/things and tells us who we "are". Our soul knows already what and who we are. Our core person vs our mask.

      How about do you even have family that love you and care about you because it ain't a perfect world and in many cases this is quite common also with different father's interracial marriages etc. This is so everyday common in the open and out there even more so today. even growing up in the projects you saw a lot of this among black people too a very dark sibling looking like their father some quite lighter skin like their Mom and some a. combination skin complexion that was in between both parents. This has been around. This and that side of the family whether something else or passing has long been around. Funny people are homeless and on the street for various reasons with no family. They always ask if they have family and try to find some family. What about white wealthy families that adopt children of different races including darker skin black children. This topic exists people have different ideas and point of views but really What is the big deal. It is in no way something that is out of the norm today especially when you see so much of around in the open. Crazy people you are just going to have to deal with something that is largely common.

      Yep. And sometimes too many people, on both the white and the black sides, tend to lose that fact of common sense when it comes to those of us who are Black and White mixed. Both Black and White people tend to have SO MUCH to say, rather, bark at us (quite frequently) on an experience they don't have immediate access to--although Black Americans tend to have much more insight on mixed ancestry considering the history of the Black community. But in essence, mixed people, grown-ass men and women, are often reduced to the level of little children being scolded/chided/criticized/even verbally abused by certain people from both communities. I think some white and black people tend to lose propriety and overstep their boundaries because mixed-race people are the result of these two races coming together, so some may think they have some type of control over our racial identity and place in this country when it couldn't be the furthest thing from the truth. Hence, why so many will think they have the right to dictate to mixed people who they are, despite it being the height of disrespect. Mixed people are the only ones who control their collective identity and narrative and I think more of us should step up, take the reigns and take over this narrative. Make our voices on our experiences the predominant ones because I've seen too many people trying to silence, shame or degrade us or even worse, think they can become our mouthpieces while totally disrespecting us in the process (not talking about the video--I've seen many so called "mixed/interracial" advocates of OTHER races over the years figuratively step on mixed people's faces while claiming to support us). All of this is totally unacceptable. In any case, couples like Rebekah and her husband's, mixed people forming their own family units, it will be undeniable that the population of biracial people will only continue to increase and they will have that right to self-determination for not only themselves but their descendants.

  • @yippehanako
    @yippehanako 5 лет назад +3

    So...you're mixed? Okay? That's what we are, we don't all look the same. Some favor one race all the way, it's not the end of the world. If you don't want to explain it to everyone (I get tired of it too) just don't answer. If I don't feel like explaining who my parents are I just say, "I'm American". I know what I am so idc if some stranger thinks I'm white. They'd be half right anyways so I'm not gonna stress about what anyone else thinks I am. The truth is the truth

  • @RETROGEMS

    The reason why Rebekah was 'mistaken' as Latina was not a mistake at all. She was simply assumed to be what the uniform word Latina has been applied to very frequently in Spanish culture: mixed-race people of African descent. Many Puerto Ricans/Dominicans/Brazilians are similar to us in that they're European and African in descent sometimes with Indigenous heritage too. How is that different from those of us mixed in America? Like I said, traditions and history are simply different. Mixed-race Americans had the one drop rule applied to them, mixed-race people of the Latin world did not but we're all part white, part black here. It kinda irritates me when a whole bunch of mixed people are called and regarded as different things when the only dividing factor is culture here, let's be real.

      You just need something to complain about. Asking someone "what are you?" Isn't offensive at all. It's a common question among all groups of people. Only people who are uncomfortable with their heritage get offended by that question. It's just a conversational ice breaker. From there they may ask you about foods and hobbies to make a connection. It's quite obvious that you are human. You're being overly sensitive over an innocent question.

    Not to split "ethnic hairs" here ... but ... that first woman who says that SHE'S BLACK bcuz her father is black ... Ummmmmmmm ... and her mom IS WHITE ... DOESN'T THAT MAKE HER JUST AS WHITE EQUALLY ... she's 50% Black and 50% White ... so SHE HAS NO RIGHT TO GET PISSY WITH PEOPLE WHO THINK SHE'S WHITE ...or who say that she's white ... BCUZ SHE IS JUST AS MUCH WHITE AS SHE IS BLACK...!!! Why on earth are so many people DENYING "THE WHITE" in them and CLAIMING THE MINORITY RACE AS THEIR PRIME IDENTIFYING RACE ... !?!? ... it's like the Aboriginal people where I live ... some of them ARE GLOW IN THE DARK WHITE AND HEAD TO TOE "FLAMING GINGERS" and their Great Grandmother was 1/4 Aboriginal ... SO THEY SAY THAT THEY'RE ABORIGINAL...!!! 😱😵😱 Personally I think they're ONLY doing it for ONE REASON ... and ONE REASON ONLY ... and it can be summed up in ONLY ONE WORD ... and that word is "BENEFITS"...!!! The aboriginals here GET A FULL FREE RIDE ... IN EVERY WAY - INCLUDING FREE UNIVERSITY - FREE DENTAL - basically FREE EVERYTHING...!!! And being completely honest ... if I held a Golden Aboriginal Ticket 😵 I'd use it too...!!! My question is ... exactly HOW THIN does the bloodline have to get before the benefits stop rolling in...?!? My family lost ALL OF THEIR LAND - A CASTLE AND AMAZING GOLD - DIAMOND AND RUBY JEWELLERY LOCATED IN THE ALPS DURING WWII ... it was JUST TAKEN from them by the Nazi's and they threw my Grandfather in the truck and took him off to a Concentration Camp in Siberia ... my family DIDN'T SELL their land and the castle for some Firewater and some shiny beads ... AND YET I'M NOT BEING COMPENSATED FOR THE LOSS IN ANY WAY 😵 ... it was all just filed away under " shit happens" and then they went on and did the best that they could. I DO NOT AT ALL believe in the whole "Reparations" ... IF YOU DO IT FOR ONE RACE ... THEN YOU HAVE TO DO IT FOR EACH AND EVERY RACE THAT WAS OPPRESSED - ABUSED IN ANY WAY - AND STOLEN FROM DURING TIMES OF WAR AND IN A DIFFERENT CENTURY ... and to do so IS UTTER AND SHEER INSANITY...!!! I MISS THE GOOD OLD DAYS WHEN DELUSIONS WERE RARE ... AND CLASSIFIED AS A "MENTAL ILLNESS" and then TREATED ... delusions weren't ENCOURAGED and NO ONE WAS EXPECTED TO "PLAY ALONG" WITH THE DELUSION for fear that the persons feelings might get hurt 😵 ... SUCK IT UP BUTTERCUP ... WE HAVE BECOME THE LAND OF DELUSIONS...!!!

    There is nothing wrong with being proud to be mix, but you have to understand that society will classify you as black if you mix with black. And treat you as such. When you fill out forms that asks for your ethnicity It doesn’task what’s your mix.

      Cisum Golden I’m not saying what people think she is because what her skin looks like. I’m saying if you mix with black the government consider you black. And when I said people will treat you as such is meant when they find out she mix with black they will treat her like she’s BLACK. Not base on They impression of what they think she is.

      @@Theboywen The goverment hasn't been in the business of deciding who is what race since the Racial Integrity Act was overturned in 1967 and the only people who would treat her black if she's mixed with black are white supremacists and black people. Nobody else really cares, including the adverage white person. There's a thousand other ethnicities in this country besides black and white. 30% of white Americans have an african american slave ancestor. It's not as big a deal as you think it is.

So seeing this and comparing my daughters to them I'm like damn: These are some of the whitest looking blacks I've ever seen.. But still always be proud of your heritage and where you came from..✌️✌️

    She does not "feel" black, she feels mixed, which is why she married a mixed husband, because that's who she felt most comfortable with and the person with whom she identified. You have to understand the idea of an unreliable narrator, which is what she is, in order to realize that though she says words with passion, they aren't true. She has no idea what it's like to "feel black" because she isn't black. She has always been mixed.

But nope . I'm just a English speaking white girl.

    Love it when she says 'at the end of the day, I'm not latina, I'm black' lmao. No, at the end of the day you're mixed race and you're clearly predominantly European. White mother and black American father means that at the very least you're 60% European. In her case, it's likely more than 60%. What's with people these days hating who they are? People are always trying to look for a different identity

    I really like your prior videos but this video wasn't as good. These people are fully aware of the fact that they are atypical representatives of respective communities they belong or want to belong. I have more detailed comments but I think I am not in a position to judge anyone in the video so I am addressing to the editors. Our perceptions of race and gender may be subjective but most of the time we are right. The worst is to identify someone(right or wrong) with a certain group and discriminate based on that. This video is pushing the limits to milk the racial sensitivity cow without any relevant content. But again, it's only one guy's opinion. Don't lynch me please.

    • @ahahahahaja
      @ahahahahaja 6 лет назад +4

      you choosing to say, 'don't lynch me please' speaks volumes. what a violent and charged word you're keenly aware of, a word that has so painful racial and historical connotations with african americans in this country. and you want to jump in on something you haven't experienced personally. who gave you the moral high ground here? oh right.... i think i know.

    My father was a white man from Brooklyn and my mother a black woman from North Carolina. I look like I could be Puerto Rican. I was in the hospital a few years ago and the Asian doctor wrote down on the paper that I was a white woman which totally shocked me because I do not look European. Perhaps because he was Asian and not born in America that played a part in his decision of my race rather than asking me. When I was very young I was called mulatto on occasion.

  • @lunaticgr2925
    @lunaticgr2925 6 лет назад +6

    For me, If you look white, then you are white and If you look black then you are black. Though, I despite these 2 terms. This woman who says she is black, is probably 20-30% African because her mother was fully European and her father mixed, she looks like that. If you are 0.1% Africa, then you are not black. EVERY person in the world has at least 0.3% African DNA because people originated from Africa, even the most white Russians have African DNA. If she wants to claim she is part African then it's cool, but she is not black, because black is simply a color, and her skin color is white. Honestly, you Americans make me sick with the obsession you have with race. Just accept the fact you are all Americans. Also, even the "pure" African Americans have at least 10-20% European DNA since they mixed with "whites" all these years.
