The largest gong measures 5.15 m (16.8 ft) in diameter. It was made by Shanxi Baodi Real Estate Development CO. Ltd and displayed at the Third China Taiyuan International Cooked Wheaten Food Festival, Shanxi Province, China on 8 September 2005. The gong was made of copper and weighed 568 kg (1252 lb).
@@fibiger12 Any thickness you like. I don;t know how thick these would be, likely under 1/8 of an inch. B20 is just classic "bell bronze" alloy mixture, specifically, 4 parts copper and 1 part tin mixed together and cast (the "20" is the tin percentage, B8 means 8% tin and 92% copper). Some Paiste cymbals like 2002s are made of B8. Their Signature line is b15. You can get an idea of how much tin is in a cymbal by how yellow the cymbal is when finished. B20 is yellowish-golden, but B8 looks more like pure copper.
Was this gong of a particular design, or was it a unique design? It looks similar to the Sound Creation Moon and Peace gongs, but unlike Moon it has a crash, and unlike both the center spot is not hammered.
Does anyone record these things in a place where the background noise doesn't ruin the video? Here, I have an idea. How about you record the next video in a saw mill.
I was there and got to play it briefly, it was most awesome! I asked the guy the cost and he shook his head, saying it was a one-off that was custom made for TV show that got canceled before they ever used it or something. I'm assuming it's one of those deals that if you ask "how much?" you obviously can't afford it! 😅 Their largest production model is 80" in diameter and those have a list price of $32,600 and the street price is almost $28,000! I'd guess if you had $50,000 to $100,000 cash burning a hole in your pocket, you and Paiste could come to some sort of arrangement? ;-)
Their gongs are all handmade by experienced craftsmen without machined hammering, so each would be a one-of-a-kind, but have comparable sounds for the design type. The orchestra I was a percussionist in had a 50" Paiste gong with the large dot in the center. Everyone remembers you when you're the guy who plays the gong or the tympani. :)
When I become wealthy I'm going to be that guy who custom-orders the 120" gong. :) When I'm old I'll donate it to a museum so others can enjoy the sound of it.
But I wish they had shown him rubbing that all along the outer rim in a circle because that would make a very unique sound that someone else started to do on another vid in the very last few seconds... and regretfully it stopped abruptly but that was my favorite sound on the gong and it felt like it was helping my brain
I was a little bit disappointed... when I was a kid the first time I heard a large Kong it made a sound that reminds you of the sun very quickly coming up over the horizon and looking like the up most of Splendor it was a sound that I could do with my mouth but can't explain here in words... it was a majestic beautiful Rich golden sound and none of these gong's I've heard today on these videos sound like that
I want this as an alarm clock. Every day will be more epic than yesterday.
It's good to see the guy who made it isn't afraid to hit it, unlike all other gong videos of these monsters lol :D
He hits it like if he was using a pickaxe in Minecraft.
He is Erick Paiste his name is on the gong... Of course he can smack the hell out of his own product
If he breaks it he can make a new one, if they break it they have to buy a new one, big difference.
Notice how he got it good and vibrant before he struck the ultra-blow.
They're relatively fragile instruments. Wouldn't want to crack a $50k gong
My grandmother had one of those to call us in for dinner
This is the man of Paiste company!!! ❤👏🏻
Did anyone else catch that terrified scream at 1:16 as the gong's tone starts to take off ? :P
LanceCampeau lol, I did.
LanceCampeau You think you could make one of these? :p
Yeh
It’s lady Salvia welcoming you home.
That was a whistle
My grandmother used to pull my hair.
how is this relevant

kinky
Lol
I was there , the energy produced by the gong took the people to a something that I can only describe as an spiritual connection.
. try Meinl for a spirit connection, not that pan lid
@@mighy1929 I'm trying to understand what you said... because I don't
Like the same spiritual connection you get from watching girl on girl action while eating Cheetos in a beanbag chair?
Doug Pullins yep same thing
I have to try this. Is it a similar feeling to being close to a Jet starting up where the sound is vibrating through your body?
The ultimate irony of a huge gong is that to crush the souls of your audience your own head must be inches from the source of the sound.
Ear protectors duh
Splendid as usual
Too bad this wasn't filmed with a decent microphone. :(
agreed

Incredible !!!!
Get some studio quality audio of that thing!
Parker Davidson I want to take this in the studio! Lol
Orchestra needs gongs.
I love crescendo effects
If the mic can't pick up the low end, it's pretty much the same as hitting a small gong
One Gong to rule them all
youtert this is the king of gongs
Yeahhhh!!!!
One gong to rule them all
One gong to bong them
One gong to bring them all
And in the darkness dong them
I never thought you’d break the 80” record. I’m happy to see I was wrong
I was there in the day. At the UrbannBoards Stand, which I represent. Very cool !!
excellent sound nothing like you did
Fantastic hammering, superb complex harmonics, and unaffordable object. When will Paiste make gongs and gamelans in B20 alloy?
Amazing!!
You waking up budha
On sale at guitar center $734,745.99.
those are some tough ropes
The God,s voice
I remember the price being something like $25,000. It maybe more than that now...
We will never get to hear it properly :(
Amazing ¡¡
How much does this thing weight?
This guy is legit as hell
how thick is the gong, and what is the material?
Yes, I would also like to know this information. I believe the metal is nickel-silver but I could be wrong.
Some kind of bronze for sure. I would say B20 but this is Paiste, so you never know.
@@DrMackSplackem what thicknes is b20?

Does every Paiste gong sound alike just like their cymbals?
Generally they do but there are some differences depending on when they were made and who the gong-smith was at the time.

the earth is our mother gong
When did they come out with the 90”?
I was told at the show that it was just a one-off commissioned by some TV show. The show was canceled before they got the gong.
When I become wealthy I'm going to be that guy who custom-orders the 120" gong. :) When I'm old I'll donate it to a museum so others can enjoy the sound of it.
fenomeno....
If he keeps on bashing that Stargate like that, Ra will come out an wreck him 🙄😂
Drummer ripping out a beat as hard as he can. Dude tap his gong and blows out the drum heads.
So when's the 100" coming next? 2026, the 130th anniversary of Paiste? 😏
Great way to attract customers to your stand.
Not so great if you're the stand owner and you have to hear it all weekend.
God needs to resuscitate John Bonham to show this guy how to hit a gong.
Maybe he don't play it like Bonham, but that guy is the gong maker: Erik Paiste.

I don’t want to hear the sound of heavy rain I want to hear it go bang!! I hate it really hard

shshshshsh...
Whoever was ripping apart filing or whatever in the background, obviously has zero appreciation for sonic purity, and ruined a phenomenal performance.
not a lot of sustain...
It sounded quiet nice in person but I suspected that the metal is thinner then their standard 80" gongs.
He don't know how to use it lol
