Brad Grobler is a singer, songwriter, producer and composer who was born in South Africa. But in the 90s, Brad moved to The Netherlands and he started to become more active with producing several projects in lots of different genres and styles. One of his most well known and succesful projects is Dance Nation, for which he teamed up with Rob Janssen a.k.a. DJ Rob.
In the year 2001 their debut single “Sunshine” came out on Tiësto’s label “In Trance We Trust”. It became a big hit and it was the start of a very successful career for Dance Nation. I recently sat down with Brad in his studio in Rotterdam, to ask him about the story behind “Sunshine” and more.

Not surprised at all to hear that "Sunshine" was inspired by Daft Punk's "One More Time". That's what it instantly reminded me of when I first heard the vocal in the Wippenberg Remix of it, back in 2001.
I can't say I ever liked the "Dance Nation" stuff, but I really liked Bradski & Jenski's own mostly instrumental remixes of the Dance Nation tracks (particularly "You Take Me Away" and "I'm Gonna Get You"), and their track "Hardbeat".
The Wippenberg Remix is good.

"Sunshine" is one of those tracks that i didn't really care about, but it got stuck in my head and as a result i've listened to it many times since its release.
I used to play GTA3 often around 2001-2002 and it was possible to burn music to a CD and have it play on the radio when you entered a car. "Sunshine" was one of those tracks.
Not the best metric to measure popularity of a song, but storage space on that CD was limited and "Sunshine" was one of the chosen ones!

Loved the interview! Hearing how a classic like this came about is always interesting to me, and Twan does a great job.
Now for an idea for a new Dancenation project; I think this is the perfect time to bring this kind of trance music back. I know that much has changed over the years, but I think we’re overdo for something nice and uplifting (the vibe, not the genre). Not too serious, but definitely something to put a smile on your face when you’re on the dance floor.

AAAAAWEEESOOOOOMMMEEEE! I still wonder today, how they got this fat dense synthsounds mixed so that the vocal cut thru. And wasn't there a vocoder layering the voice' melody?

This the first time I feel really stupid, watching Music Express video's. I thought i know the background of the music scene very good I missed out on you. And even feel more stupid when you answer my question with yes.
As you worked with Rob and id hardcore, did you ever play at the Peppermill in Heerlen.
As I used to work there for quite a long time as photographer and some other things like making sure the DJ's didn't get thirsty.
The Alien Factory remix was fantastic. Would be interesting if you did an interview with them!
Not really on my wish list to be honest, sorry, I'm pretty picky ;-) Especially for artists that don't live anywhere near me. On the Muzikxpress Facebook page you can find in the pinned post what I can do and can't do regarding interviews.

Dance Nations must back ! I love 'Sunshine' This is one of those songs that will always remind me of my youth, I knew then that this track will stay in my heart forever and it is still like this today. On top of that, today I heard the Whippenberg remix for the first time because I didn't take any draws into account before, the original was too perfect. And now I have a decent dose of new energy for the coming years 😁 Thanks guys ☀️☀️☀️

I never really felt much for Sunshine but 'Words' is one of the best commercial vocal trance records ever. Absolutely beautiful track.

Hmmm, this man has made some gems, for sure. Loved Dance Nation and Becca. Funny too that DJ Rob worked on Dance Nation too. I know him from the hardcore music he made. Let's just say I had no dust collecting in my speakers. This was a great interview, Brad comes across as a very nice person, too. Have to say though: pineapple on pizza ftw! :))

I remember Sunshine. A very nice track that combines Trance sounds with House elements.
I am a bit surprised that the track was made on Roland's synthesizers. The first thing that crossed my mind was that it could have been one of the Access Virus synthesizers.
I love the part where he says he's a Korg guy and then remembered everything was done with Roland synths haha
I was late to the premiere but just got to the snippet of Brad revealing his work on the You Make Me Feel project. I remember that tune hitting the Dance scene back in Chicago vividly. Awesome tunes in your catalog. Thanks for being a part of the OG dance/trance generation ❤👏🏼

It was a Great and actually very friendly and happy time in the Electronic Dance Music Production, the sound and melody, the crossover at that time - Clubhouse, EarlyVocalTrance, Eurodance, Freestyle and Pop. Loved it! 😎
When Becca was touring Chicago at that time, they heard Dance Nation on the Radio in the tour bus, and called us. it was the first time USA-Radio for Dance Nation.... very exciting for us. 😀
