Hey guys, another good post. I'm so glad you posted this video. I surfed for my first two years as a complete beginner where there were very few surfable days. I would still go out, even on flat days to build paddle strength, comfort with the board, turtle rolls (8' mini mal). When the waves were small or poor quality, then I worked pop up technique, balance and trimming. It didn't matter to me, all I wanted was to be in the water. I said to myself, everything I'm doing is building strength, stamina and muscle memory, so that when the better days come, I can be ready to make the most of it. It's all about attitude I think, especially when you're looking to progress. The other evening, I paddled out on mushy, inconsistent waves just to check out a new break and to get a paddle work out. Everything you can do will help in the long run. So, thanks again. Love the work. Keep it up. The new style is good too.
Great video. These are typical waves at my break. If I could add that it’s best to keep your board in the wave face and not allowing it to go into the flat(trough) area of the wave. If you watch closely you guys follow this rule probably without thinking about it.
we do not have to forget that in this conditions it's necessary to surf with a thick volume and large boards , so it can be easy to get the speed and do the small cutbacks you did ... cheers for your videos brothers !
I decided to surf a 6-7ft wave for the first time even not knowing how to turn to see what I could do and I figured it out. It’s my 6th time surfing and it felt so good to be able to turn for the first time. Thank you for your tips in your vids much love!
I love surfing junk, I find the challenge extremely rewarding when I can get a few good turns in. It's inspiring to see guys ripping junk waves. A lot to be learned from this episode, thanks guys.
just a quick thanks for your awesome vids. i have always skateboarded but have just got into surfing recently after getting a good wetty from the op shop 5 weeks ago. My friends have been kind enough to lend me a foamy and give me some tips when we go out. Your vids have been really helpful too and just wanted to say cheers from nz! keep up the good content
I always went out anyway because I loved being in the water even though it wasn’t great. But yes, you have to have a positive mindset! Thanks for the video guys!!
Meanwhile... all I got are 1-2ft waves, 4 on a good day, with barely no energy behind them and without a well defined shorebreak. I must be the next Kelly Slater on the making lol
My friend and I surf storm waves in San Diego, we are usually the only ones out. We call it Yard Sale surf, cause most of it is junk but every once in a while you walk away with a nugget. It's really helped my surfing over all.
Love what you guys put out. Could you do a video on more bad wave skills? How to do foam climbs, making sections, maybe floaters over close outs, what’s going on in terms of session strategy in your head, etc. thanks!!!!
im from the gulf coast of florida so this is actually pretty fun surf for us haha. super helpful videos , I have learned so much already ! my turns and speed generation is much better now.
being from Kelly's east coast usa, I will say if you have the opportunity to use all your "speed points" early in the wave and blow some tail it is likely going to feel more gratifying than some little cutty that takes you to some mushy little anti climax gutless finish
Great video guys, it really helped. As someone who lives in a place where surfing is not popular at all, I would really like to see a video where you explain how to decide if a spot is good for surfing or not, especially for beach breaks where things can get really messy. For example, some beach breaks have shallow bottoms(to a great extent) and you can't find a takeoff spot as the waves break in different places each time
Hey Takis, thanks for watching, stoked we could help out! We have a video called "Stay Safe In The Surf", check that one out. Local knowledge helps out a lot when deciding if a spot is safe for you or not. Go into a local surf shop or ask a surfer at the beach
ahahaha im from new jersey, on our standards 1 foot and onshore is more than enough to have fun, and even good considering its basically our average waves.
pleaseeee answer this😭🙏🏽🙏🏽. Where is this?? i love y’all’s content so much, it’s taught me so much. where i surf the surf is exactly like this but there’s no surfing videos of it on the internet, so where is this? thanks.❤❤
Saw a couple of videos, and SUBSCRIBED! I'm from Uruguay and unless I drive 2, 3 hours to the east side, were I live the usual size of the waves are like these ones on the video. So this is very helpful! Great channel 🤙🏻🏄♂️
Can you also do a video on how to select white water waves for beginners? Also, what does a “good day for beginners “ look like on the surf forecast? I am a beginner learning to pop up on white water. Thanks in advance!
i used to aggree that surfing small shit waves is good but really the only benefit of surfing small shitty waves is it gets you out there surfing which is always better then not surfing at all, however KS grew up surfing sebastian inlet, which was one of the premier surf spots on the entire eastern seaboard back in its hayday... i dont think florida has produced any similar talent since sebastian is now basically a shell of its former self. Notice how the best surfers in the united states ALL come from one town and it due to one wave, lower trestles... happens to be the best wave is the state. similar to ventura/sb in the winter time. and look at john johm, grew up at the best surf spot in the world on the north shore. the best surfers come from the best waves... look at venice beach, it used to have a sick spot in POP pier, it pruduced guys like jay adams and allen sarlo but since its demise venice hasnt seen any type of talent since the wave is literally dogshit with the exception of 5-10 days a year at most. brazil also has both good and shitty waves, which makes it a very consistent place for surfing which is why the best surfers now come from brazil. point of my story, best surfers come from best waves, while the only benefit of really surfing dogshit waves is the fact surfing dogshit waves will always be better then not surfing at all, but thats basically where it ends. best surfer = best waves !00% of time....
What kind of board size would you recommend for these kinds of conditions? since its a majority of the conditions I have in north Wales, UK. Specifically for me im 5'8' and 70kg. I can pop up on a paddle board and ride these kinda waves to the shore but i want to go further with a proper surfboard.
Hey guys, ive just bought my first board to start learning to surf - i got a 5'8 rocket fish though im about 5'9" myself and about 150lbs (68kg) and im thinking its a bit too small for me. Would you recommend something bigger or maybe a longboard to learn? Im able to stand up for a moment or two but wasnt generating enough speed since i dont really know how to paddle. I have the flexibility and core skills from doing lots of yoga, but not sure if im wasting my time trying to surf small waves on such a small board? Any recommendations??
I would hold onto that board for when you get to a higher level. I would suggest getting a cheaper second hand board, something like a foamie or longboard to make it much easier for beginning!
Seriously bro, I don't care if the waves are as flat as a lake, I would still paddle out and sit on my board. Being one with the ocean or any water source is the most therapeutic activity someone can do. Inner peace is found in water!
@@HowtoRip It's the best feeling in the world! So many people don't know what they are missing out on! I left a comment on an older video asking you about tail grips. Instead of having to go back and read that, can you explain the purpose? I have always been a wax guy, and you did a video showing where you stand on your board (it was a video about balance, being to far forward or to far back) and you showed your rear foot about 2-4 inches in front of the tail grip. Can you do a video about the pros and cons of the tail grip and when to use it? It would clear up some confusion on my end. Thanks again and keep shredding!🏄 I love your content and it's helped me a lot the past week get back into the groove of surfing (only get to do it nowadays on vacation). Sorry for the long response! 🏄👍
Hey guys, I'm a beginner and since finding your awesome tutorial videos my progress has been insane. Could you please post a video of weight distribution during a carving turn for beginners? I keep sinking the rail when I turn hard left and fall. Is it because I'm not putting enough weight on my back foot?. I'm fine on the toes just seems to bed the heels. Would appreciate any help Boyz.
Thanks Jock, we are stoked to hear that! There are many different reasons this may be happening. Check out our videos on compression and rail game, these should help!
Hey guys! Amazing videos! I have been surfing for a few months now and i currently own a cheap body glove foam board and I was wondering if I should upgrade to a fibreglass funboard with a volume of 43. My waves are similar to the waves in the video. Should I upgrade or stick with the foamie?
Hey guys, thanks for all your great videos. I started surfing in the fall. I currently ride an NSP E2 7'6". I am not doing turns yet. Do you think on the small mushy waves we get here in south Florida that I can start doing maneuvers or should I drop to a 6'6" fish first. I am currently able to surf waves as big as 3-4 feet and am using my heels and toes, just not using my upper body yet to angle where I am going. I do take lessons from an amazing instructor every couple of weeks. I'd just like to have your input on it. I was thinking by end of summer, so another 4 months, then I was going to get a fish.
Definitely start trying turns if you feel comfortable, I think you would find it easier on the 6'6 fish you mentioned. Once again it's hard for us to recommend dimensions, etc...for people, there are many variables like your height, weight, skill level, etc...But what you have said sounds good. Making a huge change down to a 5'10 fish for example would be quite tricky, so a 6'6 sounds good. Let us know how you go Jaime, thanks for tuning in!
Nadia Stark from Winterfell, please send Aria our regards. An interesting topic, one which has caused much speculation over the past. We are friends, much to Kales heartache...A 'bromance' rather than a 'romance'.

This is so true I do the same all the time
You guy's actually made that surf look fun, which is nothing short of a miracle. Good vibes!
Thanks Quint!
I have always believed a good surfer can surf any condition. Thanks for proving my point.
There was always one guy who would always be out when i would paddle out in onshore slop, he is now probably the best most stylish surfer in the UK
Kale's got pink eye
Cocoa Beach, years ago, there'd be a group of kids doing skateboard tricks on tiny waves at what was then the Apollo Building. One was Kelly Slater.
Great video. These are typical waves at my break.

Might be the most important surf video I’ve watched. Thanks dudes
Im an artist. You all have no idea how much this has changed my life. Thank you.
I am from Germany and the sad truth is that the waves shown in the video are like the best ones we got over here in autum 😂

Funny thing is, the waves i see in this video are considdered good waves overhere in the Netherlands, europe. Id surf those any time.
That’s what waves are like at my local anyway😂

True, good waves are more fun.
But when I see guys shredding on 1~3 ft crappy waves more than I can on good 2~4 ft waves, this video hits home.
I've told friends the exact same thing about GOAT
Love the vibe you two generate. Thanks.

Surfing U-turns on a choppy day has got to be up there with one of the most frustrating things, still go out every time though! 😂
2-3 foot onshore. Sounds like every day at my spot here in San Diego.

Good, encouraging video. This is what it is like at my beach, so, I go out when I have the chance, and take what I get.
Sounds good Jim, nice work

what fin setup did u guys use for these waves?
Thrusters, for our weight and height we are using medium sized fins. I have used a quad in the past on a 5'3 fish, and that was super fun also!
