    Little did Vanna realize on that fateful day she would soon succeed Susan Stafford as the new hostess and letter turner of Wheel of Fortune just over two years later, and this appearance on TPIR as a contestant was but a small stepping stone in the immense fame she would soon acquire on the #1 network and later syndicated game show that has run strong for over 35 years. (Or 43 total if you also count the daytime version)
    Coincidentally on that very same day over at NBC they were having a crisis involving David Letterman's ill fated talk show, in which several game shows on their daytime lineup were canceled with Wheel also slated for getting the axe. Thankfully the show was spared from that fate when the execs changed their minds and retracted the cancellation order.

    Vanna got to learn a lot of her future career from three of the best in Janice, Dianne, and Holly.

    Oh god I have forgotten how retro the 80s were. And Vanna is hotter than all of them even by today's standards. ^_^

    At the time of this episode Pat Sajak wasn’t even known outside of Chicago as he was a meteorologist there. He replaced Chuck Woolery in 1981 on WOF

      Actually he was at NBC 4 of Columbus Ohio and at NBC 2 of Dayton Ohio before that. These were owned by Outlet Communications of Providence Rhode Island at the time.

    Something interesting that I haven't seen brought up yet. Item Up For Bid #2 Is a Gibson stove (and probably one of the few times Holly Hallstrom modeled a Gibson appliance where the door stayed close).

    I guess once Vanna got the job on WOF, each episode (on NBC anyway) was for sure broadcast "in living colour". I guess she helped put a little of it back into their daytime lineup.
    The above comment may suck a bit, but it's the best I could come up with.

    Maybe they should of asked Vanna White to host The Price of Right instead of Drew but she would be afraid people would bid on her. TV movie Goddess of Love forever.

    It,s so ironic that Vanna White,s appearance on The Price Is Right was on 6-20-1980.THAT,S also the very same day that the original daytime Hollywood Squares with Peter Marshall & High Rollers with the late Alex Trebek aired their final episodes on NBC while this was on CBS!!

  • @walterlv01
    @walterlv01 6 лет назад +9

    After annoying Bob Barker here (which wasn't that hard to do) who would have guessed that she would serve as hostess on WOF for longer than he would host TPIR? And she would break Janice Pennington's record for female model on a show by 7 years and counting.

    What a coincidence that Vanna White appeared on The Price Is Right on June 20th 1980 on CBS! On that very same day on NBC, three of its' daytime game shows got cancelled. The Hollywood Squares, High Rollers, and Chain Reaction all got the ax. Wheel Of Fortune was originally slated for cancellation as well. That decision was retracted at the last minute and Chain Reaction got cancelled instead!

      Brooklyn Six Chain Reaction has since been remastered (reruns on GSN) with host Dylan Lane.

      Chuck Woolery was asked to take a pay cut when his contract with NBC was expiring in a few years and he walked out and was replaced byBob Goen who was good friends with CBS executives and Merv Griffin and Bob Goen was the one who convinced Merv Griffin to remove Wheel of Fortune from NBC and move it to CBS syndication. Bob Goen only lasted a few years on Wheel of Fortune and was a producer/transition person until Pat Sajac came on board and then Vanna White came on board next replacing Susan Stafford.

    "Black Friday", for those that aren't aware, was the day that a certain network cancelled three game shows on the same day to be replaced by a talk show hosted by some guy who's probably faded into obscurity by now...

    Didn't Vanna also talk about in her book that she was told that going on game shows was a way to get noticed? Cause if I'm not mistaken...that was how Kirstie Alley said she got noticed was being a contestant on Match Game.

    Now is the episode that aired on 6/20/80, or was this the tape date that aired later in the fall? I was watching back then but can remember how long PRICE seasons lasted back then. In any of event, in just a few weeks, it will be the 35 anniversary of Vanna's appearance. They just talked about this at the end of "Wheel of Fortune" a few nights ago, coincidentally, probably not realizing that this milestone anniversary was coming up. Very cool.
