- You may know Shriners Hospitals for Children because of one very special patient: 17-year-old Alec Cabacungan, who was brought to Shriners because of a rare genetic disorder called Osteogenesis Imperfecta (or brittle bone disease), and who for the past five years has helped spread their mission as the charitable organization's leading spokeskid. Lee Cowan talked with Cabacungan, who describes his challenges and aspirations, and who makes it all look so easy, while none of it really is.

When I was a kid, I was an entertainer, and used to entertain the kids with my youth group from church....and at even my young age, I discovered the strength and challenges, these young people have....made a true life's impression on me....even today!

God bless Alec ! I was in a wheelchair for 6 months as a child, because I couldn't balance myself on crutches. I've had 10 operations, but my life is STILL not as tough as Alec's , and he's come to have such SPIRIT ! Alec- you are an inspiration to us all !

How can you not love that kid to pieces? Both of my children have had multiple health problems so I feel for his parents and admire so much what a wonderful son they have raised. It’s heart breaking watching your child suffer day after day. They have given him the gift of perspective and the ability to try and look on the brighter side and to know that everything is temporary. This bad day will pass and that bad mood will pass and tomorrow is another fresh start to try again.
If the world was filled w more people like u and ur family, the world would be in a WAY better place...I love everything about u, man...STAY STRONG, bc HONESTLY...UR 1 OF THE TOUGHEST DUDES I'VE EVER SEEN,SO KEEP ON STRIVING, U STAR 🌟
This young man inspires me beyond words. Every time I see his commercials, I'm uplifted, and it's then that I think maybe I don't have that much to complain about after all.
This is totally a surprise. From being a spokesman that is constantly in my Livingroom to actually cracking the case on who he is, this was a total joy to Watch. He's funny. I think if ever he outgrows this gig, they need to have him telling stories or doing a sports show. Way to go Alec!

My cousin was born with this, OI, back in the late 70s. She was born with it in it's most severe form. I once watched her break her hip and tell my aunt about it like she was telling her she spilled water. Shriners were invaluable to her. They didn't think she'd live but she did and proved the Drs wrong. Because of Shriners she walked and got to experience so much independence. They helped with therapy, wheelchairs, making a van more friendly for her to be able to drive and have a job. She passed away at 24, 23½ years longer than the Drs gave her. She is my guardian angel. I'm forever grateful to Shriners for the dignity and respect they showed her ♥️
You inspire us to all be better people. To appreciate what matters more. Love and determination and never be without it, 🙏❤️
Words cannot express the beauty of this story. Personally I'm surprised you caught a superhero not in their costume and cape, ALL of the LOVE to this kid and his family.

As a person with OI (Brittle Bone) type 1... While I loved almost all of this video.... It really bothered me that OI is pictured as one size fits all, but there are actually several types of his condition... I have people who won't hug me for fear they'll break me after segments like this, but I don't have his type, and I wish others knew to ask instead of assume they are all the same 😔

There is a fundraiser for Shriners on tv tonight; I'd always seen him in commercials with a bright smile but what really got me this evening was the candid interview with him & his parents. I am astonished by Alec's grace & strength. He is an incredible young man. He inspires me to be better in my own life... and learn more about Shriners! 🌻

When he got his first car, I couldn't help but say WOW! Alec has been on a somewhat difficult road,but he navigated it well and will continue to do so.

What a beautiful soul. Alec and his parents are blessed beyond measure. All people that walk this earth have different stories and journey's, and Alec's life is no exception to this.
Our son was born with some minor birth defects but didn't affect his life. As he reached his teenage years he was stricken with a scitozphrenia. His father has done nothing to help his son. He has financial means but does nothing. This country does nothing for people affected by a disease that is no different than anything that affects others. I'm glad there are places like Shriners to help people.
