The Beatles - Birthday - Guitar Cover - Paul and John

- John and Paul played some searing rock licks on their Epiphone Casino guitars on this track! According to some information I've found, Paul played the lower part first on his sunburst Casino and then John overdubbed the higher part later on his sanded Casino. The Epiphone Casino being used for John's part was extensively modified to have all the visual and sonic characteristics of John's famous sanded Casino played at The Beatles' impromptu rooftop concert in 1969. This Epiphone Casino was made in 2001 at the Peerless factory in Korea. The volume/tone pots were changed and the tone capacitors were replaced with Orange Drops. The neck pickup volume knob was replaced with a black one and a black "goof" washer was put underneath the pickup selector, just like Lennon's. Most notably was the replacement of the original tuners with gold, vintage-style Grover "Milk Bottle" Rotomatic tuners, the exact same kind that John had on his guitar. Interestingly, both the Inspired by John Lennon "Revolution" Casino and Limited Edition Lennon Revolution Casino do not have the milk bottle Grover tuners.
Instruments Used:
John Lennon Lead Guitar: 2001 Epiphone Casino (see above for more info)
Paul McCartney Lead Guitar: Epiphone Casino Elitist
Amp: Vox AC15
Nice pants! Remember Harrison in some photo sessions 1968.
Yes! Those are the pants.
You know he's the guy when he has two Epiphone Casino's
Cover yer blues, please!

The pants are so sixties. Great job.
Indeed!
mattiboo
I need pants like that too....
Glad your mom let you borrow them for the video,,,lol
George Harrison had a pair like that -- wore them in White Album photo shoot.
Your playing is improving dramatically, very nice job.....................
Thank you!
@@mattiboo :) 👍
I don’t mean to be rude, but you really woke up today and decided to type ‘...................’ (18 periods).
@@mozzabbott9971 You must have quite the interesting life that you're worried about how many periods are on a comment............................
@@juke699 period..............................
FINALLY!!!! Someone who understands that the two guitar parts are a little different from each other!!!! THANK YOU!!! Jamming with others on this has been irritating
Yes!!! Thank you both so much for acknowledging that the 3rd-last note pairs in the riffs are in harmony, not octave unison. EVERYBODY gets this wrong, including Macca himself when he plays the song in concert. When I first heard Macca's band doing it wrong, I began to doubt my own ears. But it's hard to argue with 50+ years of listening to this song and hearing the parts so clearly. I knew those notes were in harmony, waaaay back in 1968! And fwiw, Macca's band also does the vocal harmonies in "Getting Better" incorrectly.......trust me, I've dissected them to the n'th degree.
Have the sunburst casino, and the striped pants. :) Thanks for these videos - trying to learn all of the George parts I can to get a tribute together!!
That's awesome! Glad to hear that you are learning George's fantastic parts from my videos. Good luck with your tribute band!
As a teenager...when I first heard this tune...already a huge Beatles fan...I almost fainted. I couldn't believe the marrow in my bones were sizzling. Every note...every drumbeat...is absolute perfection.
When I heard the beatles I immediately just asked the bank for a 100,000$ loan so I can get the guitars
The simplicity of the Beatles' songs is what makes it so difficult to nail down. Geniuses!
Guitarists like you...who are very good players...show the excellent work of the Beatles and how good they really were.
Thanks! The Beatles really were excellent!
Correct. John played kick-arse rhythm and could really drive a band. Played great lead too - simple but effective. Macca is a virtuoso genius. Harrison created and played some of the best riffs and lead lines ever. Ringo was a brilliant drummer and I like his vocals on the Beatles numbers he did. look at him do Boys live in Washington - never seen a better live performance by a drummer
I agree..since there's really no footage of the Beatles playing, you get to see just how creative they were..
John Lennons birthday is coming up and I plan on learning this for him. Thanks mattiboo for this video i am going to learn from this! :)
John Lennon hated this song btw 😂😂😂
Good job. Thanks for sharing and helping me improve my knowledge of this classic
Thank you!
It's like both guitars start dancing at 0:42
McCartney and Lennon underrated in regard to their chops. Nice work
Wait a minute, if John's Casino is from 2001, and this song is from 1968, how the fuck did he get it. Time travelling?
We may never know! (the "Instruments Used" section of my video names the instruments that I personally used, not The Beatles themselves :)
Excelente lección!! Ahora solo hay que prácticarlo!! Gracias!!
Could you plz do a bass cover of baby you're a rich man or rain
I used to hear this lick on a local radio station all the time (and I assume it's 'cause they were announcing somebody's birthday), but I never made the connection to the Beatles until years later when I heard the White Album.
John and Paul are very underrated guitar players.
the beatles are the best!
George didn’t play guitar on this. He played bass. Paul and John played guitars.
they are not lmao
@@oranjuly _WHY HAVE I NOT KNOWN ABOUT THIS?!_
Sardonicous they are lmao
Paul and John..? Wait. Did Harrison play bass on this?!
Yes!
No Paul played bass and George played guitar, according to the 2018 White Album Box Set. I think it’s correct as in the outtake, the bass is panned centre and the guitars panned left and right. Paul is heard shouting and counting off the song dead centre with the bass.
you neglected to mention it is in fact GORGE HARRISON on bass on this tune. for years i always assumed it was PAUL but it was in fact GEORGE (pretty bad ass bass licks too for a non bass player). what i have not been able to find out though is if it's the 6 string fender bass vi he and JOHN frequently used or the fender jazz bass he used ocassionally throughout 'white album' and 'abbey road'. i know by the time they started recording he had access to both as LEO FENDER had bequeathed them thousands of dollars worth of gear when they returned from india. THE BEATLES switched instruments all the time they were very egalitarian that way. i've also never been able to find out on 'white album' how much they still used the vox amps or had completely transitioned to fender.
You ask a great question! They were using Fender amps as well as Vox's new line of all solid-state amps (series that had the Conqueror, Defiant, etc). They may have continued using the fantastic Vox UL amplifiers as well.

Dig it Bro.🇬🇧🎸🤘🏼⚡️⚡️😎🎂💥
How about a birthday song just wild. Great guitars.
Two questions, where do you find pants like that ? Lol.... Secondly, how do the standard Chinese casinos compare to the ones you have if you have any experience with them?
The pants are from Atom Retro: www.atomretro.com/product_info.cfm?product_id=8891&d=HOLY-ROLLER-RETRO-SIXTIES-INDIE-70s-FLARES, or www.atomretro.com/product_info.cfm?product_id=26044&d=madcap-england-inferno-retro-stripe-bellbottoms
The first link are the ones I have, but the recently added second link are more accurate to George's, with the horizontal striped waistband.
I have played the Standard Casino in stores, and I enjoyed it. The quality is a bit lower than the Korean Peerless and the Japanese Elitist, but the Standard's sound holds up pretty well.
Great job .... Love the guitars... thanks for sharing...
That natural Casino looks especially beautiful (though John Lennon's looked more yellow).
John never lacquered his after sanding
John and Paul and George...showed the world the " power of the electric R&R guitar!"
You make such quick movements it looks like the video is fast-forwarded
Which Casino is better, the Elitist or the Standard? Also if I will replace the pickups in a Standard will it sound like an Elitist Casino?
Hey, great video! I love your Casino, looks just like Lennon's one. I'm very curious about the changes you've made on it... What's the name of the Volume buttons you put there?
i love you videos , it's cool
How many guitars do you even have😂 and amazing cover!!
Te quedó bueno eso brother.
Thanks for catching all the subtleties in this song too! You've listened very carefully to what's being played.
great job with both the parts! no better way to learn it than with this video. Thanks
paul is playing the lead/high part not john
nice
Maybe George and John, Paul play the bass
It's well documented that George played bass on this song.
@@wompus6570 It's been disproven in the 2018 White Album box set booklet
George plays the bass.
Two epiphone casinos?
Yep!
amazing! But the tuners (golden grovers) of John's epi were installed in 1970-1971! congrats!
George played bass.
Paul. It doesn't sound like George's style.
@@BeatlesCentricUniverse It's George on bass! Paul played lead guitar on this tune.
@@2JorgeBeat No way.
In a book I have, the complete Beatles, when the Beatles were in the studio to record this song John Lennon took a pill out of his pill box thinking it was a downer however It was acid and he started having a bad trip , George HARRISON took John out of the studio up to the roof as so George Martin didn't know what was going on, Paul McCartney did this song, all guitars, keyboards, lead vocals, Ringo Starr on drums with Ringo, Linda McCartney and YOKO ONO doing back up vocals.
That event happened during the recording of "Getting Better", not "Birthday". www.beatlesebooks.com/getting-better
ULTIMATE EPIPHONE CASINO SONG!!!!
Paul played lead guitar
Paul sung
John played backup guitar
John sung
Pattie and yoko sung
Ringo did nothing
George did nothing
Ringo played drums, George played bass
where did you buy the John's guitar?
Ebay, but I did all the modification with my dad.
Are you using any effects/pedals for the lead guitar (Paul)?
No, just tube distortion from my Vox AC15C1.

Where did you order those pants from?
@mattiboo I love your videos man! I was wondering if you could do a Yer Blues full cover, I think that would be really awesome. Also just to open up a discussion I believe it was george and john on guitar with paul on bass.
Paul plays the lead
And Harrison plays the bass.
The Music 1960s!!
George Harrison does bass for this
Very clean and confident. I like it!
Thanks!
I'm annoying a little to much . So john is playing a higher tone than Paul is lower tone
Yes! Read the article linked in this comment that describes the recording process. To quote the author Dave Rybaczewski, "The overdubs included John on lead guitar (Epiphone Casino) playing Paul's guitar riff an octave higher to thicken the sound" www.beatlesebooks.com/birthday
what was the name of the guitar below? the one George used and also (John)
they are both epiphone casinos. the bottom guitar is an epiphone casino
elitist if i’m right.
@@nate-m. yeah men you're right thanks and greetings from Costa Rica
You rock.
the keyboard in the second verse is just too bad ass.
Love the descriptions you made about the instruments instead the lyrics or something else!
@mattiboo I think you got Paul and Johns roles switched around. I think Paul is playing the higher part while John is playing the lower. What confuses me even more that the book that came with the 50th anniversary of the white album is that it says George played the higher part while John played the lower part and Paul was playing bass. If George played guitar its either on his SG, Les Paul or Casino and if Paul played Bass its on his Jazz Bass not Rickenbacker. I think its Paul and John playing guitars and George playing Bass (Either Fender Jazz or VI) the book has it wrong.
yes you’re right their roles are switched around. i am not underestimating johns guitar playing but this is out of his skill level. but paul could definitely play the higher part. once again i’m not underestimating johns guitar playing as he is a great guitarist.
The WA booklet got some things wrong but it's right on this. Paul is on Jazz bass, George is playing the high part (on Lucy I'd guess) and John is playing the lower riff.
No Paul played bass and George played guitar, according to the 2018 White Album Box Set. I think it’s correct as in the outtake, the bass is panned centre and the guitars panned left and right. Paul is heard shouting and counting off the song dead centre with the bass.
did George play on this song?
I believe he played bass on the Fender Bass VI.
According to Ian MacDonald From Wiki
Paul McCartney - lead vocal, piano, lead guitar, handclaps
John Lennon - lead and backing vocals, lead guitar, handclaps
George Harrison - six-string bass, handclaps
Ringo Starr - drums, tambourine, handclaps
Pattie Harrison - backing vocal, handclaps
Yoko Ono - backing vocal, handclaps
Mal Evans - handclaps
Finally John plays some lead guitar
Where do you purchase your guitars from?
Isn't the stacatto "guitar" part in the "I would like you to dance" sections organ?
1:10 and 1:56, Paul's part on the sunburst casino
You should do love me do.By the Beatles you would sound amazing doing that.😀
I have that same peerless casino! Do you recall which type of pots you replaced it with? So I can help make mine more period correct. I’m soon to be replacing in my P 90s with a set from Tyson tone (.found some chrome covers) and just received a B7 Bigsby for it, why not!
sharp that ninth
Did George play on this? I can't remember.
I got confused . What guitar does paul and john use or I mean who's top who's bottom
John's part is the natural, yellowish color Casino and Paul's is the sunburst.
Thanks that's good to know
I LOVE THE CASINO
That’s Paul & John Played Epiphone Casino Guitar
Good cover as always
The casino is modified by yourself?
Yes!
Worst song off the album but great job anyway! I hope to learn more guitar because i’ve been procrastinating lately on my Guitar warmups and practice. Hopefully i’ll get somewhere near you.
John Lennon is lead guitarist on this song. No doubt. He and McCartney.
Where did you find this version of the song without the vocals? From Rock Band?
Yep, The Beatles Rock Band
+mattiboo Awesome. And amazing cover, man! That was spot on! You do an amazing job at breaking down the song into the parts that each Beatle plays.
That's what this channel is all about! Portraying the most accurate covers of Beatles songs on RUclips!
Wow great job you're so amazing congratulations!!
Thanks!
I don't know how to say that, but I really love your videos. Every day that I open RUclips I hope that there's a your new cover! You're amazing.
Thank you for that great compliment!
+mattiboo You're welcome!
+mattiboo What pickups are in the Casinos?
The stock pickups are in both Casinos.
mattiboo thank you! I’m astounded how much the tone of the blonde (top) Casino is like the recording. May I then ask the brand and gauge of guitar strings used? Is the top Guitar a Peerless (serial starts with R)? Thanks again :)
Red, blue, yellow.
mantaaap brooo nuhuns saya butuh buat konser 17 an @mattiboo
Excelente hermano!!!!
NICE!
Thanks!
Nice pants! Good job again. Love the contrasting guitars.
I heard that Paul said that The Beatles at that point , could have a hit song even they sung Happy Birthday
Excellent job!!!
Thanks!
You always deliver. A splendid time is guaranteed tor all.
They sell the Casino like Lennon stripped the paint off?
You are Great!!!😁😁😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
The only thing better than this cover are those pants
Can you do a bass cover of the song? Just like how George does it.
¿Where did you get those pants mate?
The Music 1960s (1959-1968)
Can't be Paul as he played left handed!
Great video - thank you!
What pedal did you use if any at all?
is there a tab for the lower part anywhere?
