I was stationed there 1974-75 as a Avionics Navigation Systems Specialist. Great assignment where I made some lifelong friends, one of who I spent many hours with in the Auto Hobby Shop overhauling the engine of his Volkswagen bus.
My dad was stationed here in the early 60's during the Cuban missile crisis. Air raid drills every day! I saw "Sink the Bismarck" in that theater. I think a skating rink used to be right next to it. Went to elementary school at Damon . . . go Damon Demons! I played my first Little League on the overgrown baseball field. We lived on Wyoming Circle for several years. Bought lots of models at the base exchange. Hiked in the woods and played in the snow a lot. Good times.
Thank you for the great shots of the pool, I worked there nights & weekends via MWR and CBF. I worked in the. Base gym, first woman to have that AFSC, loved it. TSgt John F. Marchione was the NCOIC.
I was stationed at Loring from 71 to 74 assigned to the 42nd Civil Engineering Squadron. Awesome assignment and the best outdoors experience this Brooklyn Boy ever had. Married in the Chapel by Father Seize to my wife of 50 years. We eloped…👍 We returned on our 25th Anniversary and it was inspiring as well as sad to see the base closed. Thank you for the memories…. Jim and Terry
I did a simliar tour a month before you were up there. Security also seemed to deem me suspicious, but I never did anything to give them pause, though I did get very close to the runway, which could have been some decent federal offenses. I loved cruising the abandoned bunkers and then walking through the hidden bunker area within the wildlife refuge. It's a lot of interesting stuff up there.
It sounds like you were assigned to Loring AFB about the same time as me. I was assigned there from the Spring 1981 until the fall of 1983. It sounds like you worked in the "Cable Vault." You probably remember MSgt James D. Hill who's office was just outside the cable vault. I was in the 2192 Comm Sdrn as well. I was assigned to the KT shop in Base Ops. It's sad to see the base in such a state of disrepair.
Let’s hear it for Drew’s sister! Wahoo!! Liked hearing her stories and anecdotes. Interesting seeing all those derelict buildings. I’m surprised a nearby town or a real estate developer hasn’t bought that land and turned it into a condo complex and shopping center. That waterfall was cool. Any idea why it was there?
Limestone Maine has only 1,500 people and Caribou Maine only 7,700 so it's not like huge numbers of people are heading up there given there's not much of an economy to speak of and winters are very harsh. Not sure about the concrete water channel.
Apparently according to the maintence crew managing the base who we talked to its owned by a local group and its seems they keep it as is. I'm not sure if its job security or they just dont want more progress being made.
The difference between the closed George AFB and Loring to me is amazing!! At the old George AFB , graffiti is rampant however what you posted I didn't hardly notice any such disrespect. I keep my thoughts to myself as the reason I believe it's that way
I went to school there from 2016 to 2018 I did the cdl program there I drove that whit truck out side of the school lived in the dorms to nice to see it again
At 5.08 that is the maine building for students they have weekly meetings they have computer courses for current students they also have dances and party night for current students I had my graduation ceremony there when I completed my to courses there 😀
Tia, I tried to contact Fred. I haven't seen him in about 7 years. Google didn't help. My old bases, Pease-Hanscom-McCellean have been decommissioned. It's not the places you miss so mach as the people.
The “security” is just job Corp security. Nothing to worry about unless you’re a student of job Corp. you got all the buildings right after the Comm building
Hello your sister looks familiar, and I might have known her. Can you please ask her, working in Comm did she ever work on the fire alarms at Loring ? I was a firefighter at the station closer to the housing area and there was an airman/airwoman the would come to the firehouse with a civilian working on the alarms . I thing it might have been her.
@@John-b1g9y the switchboard operator mentioned @13:00. It's not my story. I was just following up on a loose end. If I recall the answer I got correctly, somebody got PCSed right quick and in a hurry to another base.

It’s really Heartbreaking to see that base go to waste.
Hey That Rec supply office was my office in 1973 - 1976. Good friend of mine was a retired Lt. Col. who worked with me
I was married in that chapel too. Stationed there from 82-91, in CHS and the 2192 CS as a photographer/graphic artist.
