  • There are brown bear subspecies in Gelsenkirchen ZOOM Adventure World. You can see Eurasian brown bears and Kamchatka brown bears. We talked about these two special subspecies with the district manager Markus Tekampe.
In the video, we first get to know the Eurasian brown bears (Ursus arctos arctos) as a species. The species has already lost local populations: they are already extinct in Ireland and the UK, for example. Generally, the species has lost much of its original range.
In Germany, two subspecies are called sometimes Kamchatka brown bears: Ursus arctos piscator (Bergman's bear) and Ursus arctos beringianus (Kamchatka brown bear). This can cause confusion sometimes also because piscator is sometimes considered to be only a form of beringianus and not classified as a subspecies, which makes it even more complicated.
The IUCN itself does not list the subspecies separately and classifies all brown bears globally as LC - they are not threatened. But if one understands the Bergman's bear, for example, as a subspecies, this would probably be considered extinct, because, in nature, they seem to no longer exist.
Gelsenkirchen ZOOM Adventure World shows two subspecies of bears and this is therefore even amazing because many people do not know the differences between brown bears. That is one of the reasons why we talk about it in the video and we also get to know the individual bears and learn more about their characters.
Markus Tekampe introduces us to his protégés, whose well-being is a top priority for him and his team. They take care of them every day. All five bears are important brown bear ambassadors who are, in the wild, struggling to survive in some areas and are already extinct in quite a few. Currently, there are only 110,000 brown bears left in nature.
At Gelsenkirchen ZOOM Adventure World, the animals live in impressively large installations that are designed close to nature. They are located very close to the polar bears, which is why you can explore different bear species in just a few meters at the Gelsenkirchen Zoo. It is super exciting to see how different they can be not only in color but also in body shape.
