I was really wanted to read “You made a fool of dearth with your beauty “ just because it is a Florence and the machine lyric . Hearing someone dating their ex father just made think of the show Chewing Gum. Luster makes me think I need to worry about the guy adopted daughter so I refuse to even attempt to read it.
See, I loved Concenient Store Woman , especially the message. From a neurodivergent point of view, I definitely could relate to the feeling of 'I should try to conform to the norm even though I don't want to because it is the thing to do' and the decision to be unapologetically herself. I actually loved it more than Earthlings (which was a WILD ride) and it made me want to read Life Ceremony. I also actually enjoyed The Vanishing Half more than I thought I would
@@jasonc.6861 Listen, I finished that book and put it back down asking myself what I had just read. It is definitely something. But the way she cleverly tackles some very real issues in that matter of fact tone makes the whole ride worth it for me
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo : I liked the book but I could understand how someone wouldn’t like it. The really bad comparison of bisexuality to being biracial…The entire storyline with the journalist needs to go.
I completely agree. I noticed she kind of did the same thing in Daisy Jones, in both cases the reporter/journalist is somehow tied in at the end but their storyline gets so little attention except for the GOTCHA at the end it just makes me wish she had left them out honestly.
I agree with you on the "The Vanishing Half." I was so confused when I finished it because I did not understand why everyone was losing their minds over it. I couldn't wait for it to be over
I read a good historical fiction this year about a Black woman passing as White and working as a manager for a private library in early 20th century nyc. It's called "The Personal Librarian" and it's written in tandem by Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray.
@@kingbarb842 It’s about four siblings and the oldest throws a massive end of summer party. Each sibling has their own issues and over the course of 24 hours, they make decisions that change their life or viewpoint on life. It’s really good. I recommend reading it! Try the first couple of chapters and see if you like it!
I didn’t read a lot of books so You Made a Fool of Death With Your Beauty is both my most disappointing and worst book of the year. It completely pissed me off and if weren’t for the fact I was telling my sisters about it I would’ve dnf it half way through but I unfortunately choose to stick it out.
I couldn't and still can't stand "you made a fool of death with your beauty"... I'm highly confused as to why people loved this damn nook. I'm side eyeing the hell out of people if they say they like this book, because I know yall ain't nothing but messy!!!
I know people like this book but it was my most disappointing and should have dnf'd Black Girls Must Die Exhausted was exhausting for no reason, traumatic for no reason, all over the place plot wise, many red flags that were suppose to be seen as normal. It was a bad read for me. I see so many people talk well about it and I don't get it.
You wanna talk about a book I'd like to burn but the cover is too pretty. What a waste of time. I feel like reading that book took a year off of my life and I should sue. To me, it fits perfectly the type of books about black people but written for the white gaze
@@viscorner4 yes and I love the cover and the dedication was too good to be true. I feel the same way made for white gaze not black people 😭 And you know it has a sequel I can't bare to look.
Convenience Store Woman and One for my Enemy were one of my most disappointing reads of the year. The people I follow was loving these books so I expected to love them too and it was just…meh. But lol at your recounting of Only on the Weekends. I have no plans of picking that book up thanks to you and Monte😂
I like the message of the convenience store woman which is “we need these blue collar workers.” Society, especially capitalism, shoves this message of constantly climbing up the corporate ladder and social ladder when some people are just content where they are. As someone who is content with her server job, maybe this book spoke to me more than others.
D*mn, Conveniance Store Woman is on my TBR! I'm still going to listen to it. Not a Happy Family and Moon Daughter were on my Most Disappointing Books of this year for the same reason: they started strong but the last act was botched, IMO.
American Royalty by Tracey Livesay was a HUGE disappointment to me. Insta-love/ lust and the characters barely get to know each other. I've loved so many of Livesay's romances and was really looking forward to this one
I definitely agree with your take on You made a fool of death with your beauty. It was dry and dramatic to me. I didn't believe the love story and the hype about it had me giving people the side eye.
Honey Girl was awful. I remember anticipating that boom since 2021 because I heard good things. But when I finally read I did not like. It tried to hard to be poetic and saccharine and the characters didn’t feel like full-fledged people
i hated honey girl too 😭 its such purple-y prose, and the character feels like such a self-insert. like why do people like the main character? agh. also everyone calls each other by their first and last names its very fanfic-y
Yea The Vanishing Half was just alright to me. The big reveal midway had me in a chokehold but then I just lost interest after that. I read Passing right after and it was GIVING! One of my favorite books of the year. I believe that if you read Passing, The Vanishing Half might lose a star or two.
I dont understand, why queer books insist, that closeted people are villains. This makes no sense to me, in this day and age? And if this is a deal breaker for someone, move on and give someone out of the closet a chance.
Yes! It is so frustrating! I read a book earlier this year about a high school girl who comes out as a lesbian and gets expelled from her catholic school because of it, but then she starts dating this girl at her new school and is completely baffled at why her new gf doesn't want to come out just yet. Like after everything you've been through you can't fathom why someone may not want to come out???
Wait that's a actual thing ? I guess I haven't read any queer books but I've always found the concept of forcing a person to come out so weird. I genuinely don't think it's that deep that you need to "villainize" the person for it
For me On Rotation was super disappointing. I wanted to LOVE it but I didn't. I saw a review that said it didn't know if it wanted to be a medical drama book or a women's fiction and I can totally agree with that persons assessment. I was excited about it because it was an own voice book about a woman whom either her or her parents were immigrants (I read it months ago and forgot to be honest) and the character was in medical school. The author is an immigrant or her parents are and she is in medical school. I loved the parts about her culture and the wedding traditions of Ghana. It just felt like it was all over the place. I do hope the author writes more I would love to read something else she writes.
the roughest draft + american royalty gotta be at the top of the list of disappointments. at least american royalty has a direct sequel that might salvage the story
it's a pity you didn't like the convenience store woman, but if you want to be stirred and you are still willing to give the author a chance, i recommend life ceremony. it's shorter stories but all of them have a "punchline"
Sometimes when Kenya’s complaining about a book i think to myself oh that sounds like something i’d enjoy 😭
Ikr the books she hate sound right up my alley 😩
same 🤣🤣🤣

I'm re reading earthlings now , it definitely is a wild ride. The literary equivalent of riding a bull.

Book Lovers was disappointing to me too. That book desperately needed Charlie's POV! Being inside Nora's head the entire time was exhausting!
I agree with you on the "The Vanishing Half." I was so confused when I finished it because I did not understand why everyone was losing their minds over it. I couldn't wait for it to be over
The daughter's part was the only story, I was invested in. Her romantic relationship was everything.

Good rec - it's also based on a real person, Belle da Costa Greene.

No you’re right, Monique’s storyline was a weak point of SHoEH. For me, it was the Celia/Evelyn storyline that really made me like this book.
