Semper Fi my friend!!! I recall those days back in the Corps when we would take on the entire weekend to play. Those were some wonderful times and we had a great group of players. I'm shocked you still remember your character from back then - all I remember are the laughs we had.... and the pizzas! BTW - they did have televisions in those rooms and we upset a few fellow Marines when we took over the entire room for our games. However, I think that is how we got a few players to join - Boss being one of them. Great times and thanks for the trip down memory lane.
What a great introduction to the hobby! For me, it was the year 2000. I was in high school, and I was visiting a my family in the north woods of Wisconsin. No internet, no video games. My cousin got out his fresh copy of the brand-new D&D 3rd Edition player's handbook. Life changing. Came home, bought all the books, been a part of my life ever since!
How I got into gaming is actually a long story. And though you know a good bit I figure I will tell you the beginning. When I was young I saw a show where college kids were playing a live version of a RPG. I was interested and found out they were imitating D&D. Trying to learn about it I found some books on sale at KB toy store that were TSR's Endless Quest books. So I got several of them and read them many times. I wanted to actually play D&D, but I did not know anyone who played. I found and bought the Marvel Role Playing game and hoped to play that but couldn't do it alone. It wasn't till high school when I met Keppler that I found gamers. So, he invited me to play Twilight 2000. I played a few different games but they were burnt out on D&D so I did not get the chance to play. Finally, they said about playing Basic. We played one time. Sadly I don't even remember my character. it was a short game and never revisited it. Then in the summer of 91 I met the guy who changed everything. He ran 1st edition in the world of Mystara. I made 2 characters a thief and an Archer. (a class my DM made) I played D&D a lot after that with multiple groups and played 1st, 2nd, and then 3rd (which I love). I appreciate meeting My DM. He still runs a game once a month I get to play. I also try to let people know about his you tube channel, but I don't know many people that he doesn't know. But he is old and has CRS so he will forget this post. :P
I started playing in 1974. A school counselor brought several of us kids together and we each had a chance to play. My first character was a Hobbit. I was able to play for about 20 minutes before I termed myself by missing a jump and falling to my doom. That was enough for me as I was hooked. I have been playing ever since. Advanced Dungeons & Dragons was the one I started running games with.
For me, 1979 with J. Eric Holmes box set and a week latter I had the 1st Ed books. I started in high school. I had heard about D&D and thought it for the Brainiac's (All because of the hype over James Egbert and his going missing). In my speech class was one of my class mates and he had the D1 Hidden Shrine module. I asked to look at it and was totally lost, but thought, WOW! COOL! We started talking and he told me to get the books if I wanted to play. I saved my lunch money for a week or so, went to the local game store (The Toy Box or Thompson Hobbies, same store different owner) Got a copy, and started to play with the school mate, as well as a young boy I would babysit, I found other kids in my trailer park I lived in and soon many of us were playing together all the time. I no longer play D&D, but play Pathfinder. We only play once every other week, and we have played other games besides PF
Semper Fi! Got my start in High School. Didn't start with D&D, but the DM I learned D&D from really got me hooked on the hobby. Was a heavily homebrewed version of OD&D, but it was all new, exciting, and inspiring. Great video topic. I think I'll follow suit, thank you. The Leathernecks I played with, all infantrymen, played AD&D 1e, and then some Rolemaster and Spacemaster. Still have regular contact with one of them. Thanks for this.
One of the greats sir. That is an awesome story man. I also am still connected to my original core group. Maybe I'll make o e of these and tell that story.
Great video, Rivers. I loved hearing how you got started. Gonzo and I got started in high school. Gonzo learned from someone down the road and I learned at Boy Scout camp around ‘83 or ‘84. You are so lucky to have a group of guys to play with constantly. That is super hard to find. Is that your Oakfist group?
Thanks for sharing. I really need to do mine but I'm worried it's a bit to dark for a whole video. As a dyslexic, depressed teenager, I found life hard right up until finding roleplaying. Long story short, I've had the same group for over 34 years and they#ve help keep me sane.....kind of. Keep up the great and honest content
@@RIVERSRPGChannel I know you mentioned the Supernatural game, which I assume you mean the one based on the TV show, the Cortex system one.. I absolutely love that system. I wish more folks played it. It was like Savage worlds, but a little easier to play.
