    I am a person with a colour-drenched Hague blue bedroom and I have to say my first impression when I did it was how even things I initially hated about the room (poorly-finished ceilings, 60’s wood-panelled headboard, floor colour I was not keen on) were totally unified and glowed with the bold colour choice. Then when I started hanging art on it in a salon arrangement, it helped tie together all the disparate sizes and styles on one wall - it mirrored the blues from each work, and gave a glowing contrast to the whites of the paper and the gold of frames.
    The one major problem I have however, is that I live in a humid country (easily 90-100 percent humidity in some months) and I must warn anyone living in similar atmospheric conditions and wanting dark ceilings that the paint can trap moisture in the ceiling and bloom. Water and soap will only worsen the situation (I have a semi-gloss finish and I use argan and tea tree oil to clean the walls and ceiling occasionally, I kid you not, those are the ones I have personally tested to keep the moisture and the resulting whitish bloom at bay butI’m not sure what works for matte paint. At some point you allow for a bit of a bloom, if your home is eclectic or ‘grandmillennial’ it can actually lend a charming time-worn feel to it, you just need to maintain the uniformity between the colour of the walls and the ceiling for the colour-drenching to work. Having discovered painting the ceiling I love it and will probably always want it. It really makes everything look dramatic and ‘directional’ but do bear in mind the possible issues if you are living in a very humid place.

    This is honestly the best RUclips design video I've seen on the use of color. Really excellent Phoenix. Thank you so much for clarifying the difference between painting a dark color all over a large/naturally well-lit room, as opposed to a room with very little natural light. All of the info/graphics/photos were instructive, and I felt you could have gone on! I actually have a 1BR where the entry/dining/LR space is 14 x 28 with a tiny-ish window at the opposite end from the front door. It's basically a long, dark cave. Paying an electrician to add lighting helped the darkness issue. (Unexpectedly, adding a ceiling light closer to the window did more to brighten the room than the light I added closer to the door - at the darker end. It's like turning on the sun!) But I also painted one wall on the short end BenMoore Turquoise (love!), (the walls are Chantilly Lace) to visually shorten the space. After watching your video I'm wondering why I didn't paint the other end of the room blue as well (and now I'm considering it!)

I’m testing a board of samples right now in different lighting as the seasons change. I’ve a new build of a small cottage coming along and plan on painting only once. Your advice is spot on. I recently moved to a one-bedroom apartment, and I was planning on colour drenching the bedroom in a warm brown colour similar to the colour of the hallway you showed at 7:31. Coincidentally, I have that same photo saved on my Pinterest board to do exactly that to my foyer. Glad to know I'm on the right track. :D
    The only thing I'm indecisive about is the wall colour of my kitchen. I was thinking about doing the exact same thing with it as I'm going to do with the foyer to make it look like a separate space, but I can't find any examples of it. My kitchen cabinets are a warm grey, and all similar kitchens on Pinterest are paired with white walls. I'm not sure what to do.

    I’ve normally had a very traditional style and I also went through a modern farmhouse phase. I’ve been trying to transition to more of a mix between traditional (a little rustic) and modern (more mid century than full on modern). And I think the reason I’m not feeling like I’m totally there is that I have a chair rail that is in my dining room, living room , and hallway. There’s something about it that feels very dated. I think if I add molding to the walls above and below it and just paint them all the same color so all of the molding blends into the wall but there’s still some architectural detail, it will get me the look I’m wanting.

    Absolutely love this video! I decided to go for it and painted our hallway bathroom Hopper Head by Farrow and Ball. I took it from the baseboard to the ceiling and crown moulding. It’s a dark and moody color but I have a south facing window with gold frames and mirrors and I could spend my whole day in there lol it’s truly what you describe a space as “enveloping” I know you gave this advice for bedrooms and I wanted to dip my toes in a smaller room to try the dark color in and now I’m hooked. The bedroom will be next 😊

  • @_Dani.Lynn_
    @_Dani.Lynn_ 8 месяцев назад +1

    I’m actually doing a few of your recommendations in our basement area. I’m doing the Elongation in the hallway with a neutral beige on the walls and a moody dark burgundy with brown tones, like the color of a Japanese maple (the renders of our original colors honestly just looked boring as heck) and color drenching in the two bedrooms down there. One is a moody blue/green (Tempe Star from SW) and the other room is a terracotta (I got the idea from you! Canyon Clay from SW). Our country handyman looked at me like I was high and asked “Are you sure you don’t wanna do porcelain?” We’re in a MCM and my goal is a Mid-Japandi style but with moody earth toned colors. I hope it turns out well!

  • @AndYourLittleDog

    This was really helpful. Can we go a bit deeper on paint? I never know how to pick a finish. Should the walls and ceilings be different finishes? If you’re doing limewash and want that deep, matte, velvety finish, how do you treat the crown moldings and ceiling?

    • @savannahharris9792
      @savannahharris9792 Год назад +2

      This is all just personal opinion, but I think that eggshell is the best choice because it’s not completely matte but a step above . So it gives a slight sheen but very minimally, which helps hide imperfections.
      😊 I would keep the finish the same on walls and ceiling .
      As far as limewash I’m not sure , hopefully someone can help with that!

      @@savannahharris9792 thank you. Finishes are so confusing when you’re thinking about painting walls that you want to decorate with a gallery wall. I’m putting a lot of thought into how to execute

    • @vaderladyl
      @vaderladyl 10 месяцев назад +1

      They don't have to match. The more shine the paint has the more durable it is against scratches, scuffs and scrubbing, but it is also more reflective. Traditionally you paint the ceiling in a flat to avoid reflection, and then paint the walls any finish you want but the standard is usually ranging from flat to satin and moldings, woodwork, doors ranging from satin to high gloss, but that is just the standard if you want to follow it, but you can also pick whatever finishes you like as well.
      Usual examples are flat, eggshell ceiling with flat; eggshell or satin wall, all flat from ceiling to baseboard, eggshell all over, or flat ceiling/eggshell wall/satin baseboards, and so on.
      For complementing limewash finish, you can use flat or you can use eggshell finishes on moldings and ceiling.
      I also recommend you do a lot of Google research about finishes so you understand the purpose of each better and how to use them all together.

    Great video DD, I wasn't brave enough to paint walls and ceiling in my living room the same dark green, (drunken porch . . . er I mean lush veranda in the Co-op paint) so did the ceiling in a tone (I using the term correct?) 3 shades lighter on the colour chip. I'm glad I did, I've 8 foot ceilings so not a huge space but it seems to work, I do get a lot of compliments on the space. One thing I like is the different vibe the room has in the day vs the night. It amazes me how many people are scared of colour, the number of places done in builder beige . . . see you next Sunday!

    Thank you for the tips for elongating a room. My soon-to-be husband (in 2 weeks) and I are moving in together after the wedding and I have been at a loss on how to paint our very tiny sitting room.
    It has nice ancient details and we are using a very high and ornamented century-old family mirror to give the room a focal point and some character. I am definitely going to study how we can paint the ceiling and the wall farthest to the entrance to expand the room while not adding too many colors (we are reaching the limit already).

    This isn’t the only decorator/influencer video I’ve seen that promotes ways to make homes look more “expensive”. When did expensive become our primary goal? Do we really need to compete with each other in the category of who (apparently) spent the most money on home decor? Seems to be a shallow and tacky emphasis to me. How about suggesting ways to make our homes look elegant, classy and tasteful? Perhaps expenditure is implied, but not necessarily. Good taste is priceless.

    Did you know your left shoulder is higher than your right shoulder? It's common.

    Please please drop that vile chair. That suit looks so nice on you but that chair just detracts from you. Less is always more.

    Hi dad!
    I love your new background, but I must point out that your beautiful chair take the attention from you. I hear you but my focus on your beautiful speaking face is taken away by those effective attention catching stripes. Just saying 🤟😫

    My hack of the day: Removing a messy paint job from one's arms and hands will make that person look more expensive and elevated...

      Not if you like the effect of a white ceiling. That is only if you want to shorten the ceiling visually and the light is bright enough to compensate for the dark color.
