  • This was a brilliant day out to the lovely historic city of York.
We started off by meeting at kings cross station early in the morning to get on our train.
After arriving, our first stop was the church of St. Philip and St. James, Clifton which were a sweet ring of six which were easy going. The recorded footage here was of a touch of Plain Bob Doubles called by Thomas Ashwin-Siejkowski.
We then went to the oratory of St. Wilfrid’s unfortunately for a ring on the simulator rather than hearing the actual bells. Here you’ll hear a touch of Grandsire Doubles called by Fraser Storie with the sound of the Minster’s gorgeous bells in the background.
Afterwards we went off to the church of All Saints North Street to ring on its pleasant octave. From here you’ll hear some more Grandsire Doubles called by Fraser Storie again.
We then got on the bus to our contest tower which was All Saints, Huntington where we rang Grandsire doubles on the back six, again called by Fraser Storie. The bells weee very quick going even for their weight and they rang very nicely.
After the competition piece we went off to St. Olave Marygate which were a friendly ground floor ring of six and again here you’ll hear a touch of Grandsire Doubles called by myself.
We saved the best till last and went to ring the lovely twelve at York Minster however before that we rang on a couple of mini rings in the Minster itself. When it came to ringing the bells we rang some rounds, call changes, plain hunt and Grandsire cinques. Annoyingly I rang the 59cwt tenor with bent arms which will annoy me for a while I think. But either way it was a brilliant experience to ring at such a grand cathedral.

When ringing big bells like that, you will find it easier to ring them with straight arms. Ringing with bent arms AKA barmaid’s elbows, doesn’t allow full control of the bell and makes it 10x harder to ring

Yeah that’s the first thing I noticed when I watched it back. I usually ring heavy bells with straight arms however I remember feeling uneasy in that moment as it was by far the heaviest bell I’ve ever rung and so I was resistant to taking in rope. I felt annoyed about it afterwards and I still am a bit

You did a good job on York tenor, and yes bent elbows are nor good on any bell especially that Tenor.
I see you werexwith the Salty trainspotter.
I was at Kingscross in May as we went to stay with old an old school mate from St Anns who lives in Hunstanton .
This was another school mate not the one in my St Anns video.
We are all the same age and went to St Anns school together.
I think in 50 years time you w8lp still be ringing and friends with people like the salty trian spotter and others.

Well let’s hope so. I have many friends in ringing and some who are the same age as me such as Fraser (the salty trainspotter) so I’m hoping we can keep ringing going for as long as possible

@1260stedders no doubt you will, I have witnessed so many life long friendships and marriages and I'm now 70.No doubt Fraser made his pilgrimage to the National Railway Museum, I would.
I think that front 10 is also a cracker although had 24cwt its not exact light.
St Mary's Cathedral in Sydney has a 34cwt 12, a carbon copy of Canterbury, it has a light 10 of 14cwt and is an absolute cracker to ring on.
My dad hung them in 1986.

Very nice striking on the back four bells at the end. It is really helpful, when you are trying to set a big tenor bell when someone says "Come on Luke". That makes such a difference!!

@@1260stedders I know! He and I rang the 9 and 10 down at Twickenham on Wednesday. I'd know that voice anywhere.
