  • This is a model of a 30hp 3 cylinder engine from 1910. These engines were used to power the first aircraft.
    The model was designed by L. W Chenery and built by Michael Stratton
    It has a 1” bore, a 1¼” stroke and a capacity of 48cc. In the video it turns a 20” x 8” propeller.
    The exhaust valves are operated from a cam on the camshaft but the inlet valves are “automatic”, as they open on the suction of the descending piston. Lubrication is provided by an oil pump to drilled passages in the crankshaft.
    All the machining was done on a manual lathe and milling machine, no CNC was used.
    The curved propeller in the video is some weird strobe effect caused by the camera frame rate.
