Frustrating that audio descriptions are still not a common thing in 2023. I'm spending time enjoying videos with audio description because I want to include it in my own RUclips videos.
I'm blind and usually I can tell what might be going on in a movie or TV show. However, I am glad there are movies with audio description. As a matter of fact my sister had me visit her to watch a movie and she put on the audio description for me. This meant my dad didn't have to describe everything and talk through the movie which my sister hates. Audio descriptions throughout a movie never or rarely talk over the actors.
Thank u, I am just learning about all this stuff for my sister who recently lost site, not always easy to find how to turn on. But when not available really is not cool, and leaves me answering questions, AN missing parts as I explained what all happened.. It's not fun to watch videos that way, for her or myself, is really a messed up thing.. Can't just enjoy watching things togather, without it!!! I can see an it don't bother me to hear it it at all... By time most net sites finally start adding this, they'll have a cure for blindness!! Thanks for pushing a need for u tube to add this..... ❤😊
hi James, happen to find your video after looking up what audio descriptions mean to fulfill WCAG AA. I'm surprised that even until today audio descriptions is not an inherent feature on RUclips yet sadly. I really like how this video explains the benefits of having audio descriptions possible. Thank you!
I'm so pumped to share & tweet the hulk out of this, make a vid supporting you and anything else I can do, omg yes to more accessibility for YT in 2016! As a fairly new creator myself for my collab channel Chronicles, which specifically talks about disability (re: chronic illness mostly atm but looking also to expand to other areas of disability to support the rest of the community), I'm always looking for new ways to make it more accessible to everyone & this inspires me so much. thank you for your insight! 💪💪💪
Aww thank you, that's such a honour tbh I really admire all your content I've seen! I haven't posted in a few months cos of poor health, but finally feeling a few more spoons coming my way to hopefully start uploading content this month onwards. ^_^ -Victoria
Man, even 4 years later they are still lacking this option. I fully understand you and why it would be super handy for you. For me, as a gamer and content creator who recently uploads game-plays having dual audio option would be super handy as I could separate non-English or Voice Chat audio from a Game Audio, which I already done in post-processing or video-editing, but yet, was unable to upload a video with 2 audio tracks to YT or to add additional audio/description audio track. Hope we will get it soon as I have noticed "Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: Story Trailer | Ubisoft [NA] " has dual audio.
Hey Man, great video. I've totally wondered why RUclips, Vimeo, and other video platforms don't have options for a switchable AD track. Makes sense to have it, and would be so much more convenient than uploading two separate versions and directing your relative viewers to the right one. I hope they hear the requests and implement a feature like that. I have a short film in the works right now, and I've been doing a ton of research into accessibility. I want to make sure everything I create is as easy to consume and comprehensive as possible for everyone. Thanks for not only making this video, but also for the multitude of informative videos you've made about how people who are visually impaired consume video content. Cheers
Hey thank you for talking about audio description. I am blind and this is a wonderful feature ! Yes Netflix, and most of its new shows, have audio description. That is really really awesome! Thank you! Kimmy Schmidt would not be the same! But yes I agree with you! RUclips come on! And Hulu! Both of you need audio description! It’s 2018 now let’s go!
I personally don't make youtube videos, but I do enjoy this one webcomic called Homestuck. A few weeks back, I wanted to reccomend it to a friend of mine when I realized that it was entirely inaccessible to anyone who is blind (which my friend is). So my friend and I started a project called the Accessible Homestuck Project to add image descriptions to the entire comic, provide it in way formatted best for screen readers and for braille readers, and to have the entire thing voice acted with image descriptions. I'm not trying to say this as a "Oh, look at me doing this amazing thing!!" but rather because I think it's something you or others on this channel might be interested in.
I feel like it would be only fair that, since subtitles are meant to help people with impaired hearing or deafness, people with impaired vision or blindness should also get an accessibility option in the form of audio description.
Hi! I just found this in my search for videos on RUclips that include Audio Description. I've started working on incorporating AD, but it would be so much easier if RUclips just gave the option to create an AD track, just like captions... I wish we weren't still asking six years after you made this video!
Agreed! They have programmed the option but only a few select channels have been given access... which is a bit odd as it's been nearly a year. If you are trying to make your videos more accessible, I'll be making a video about best practices for creators but in short I'd suggest just being descriptive in your dialogue. It doesn't have to be a full audio description script, but try to incorporate descriptive language into what you're trying to visually represent. You could try playing your video back without looking or just listening to the audio and ask yourself "Did I describe the visual context of the video well enough?". Let me know if that makes sense, I feel like I need to flesh it out in a simple to follow video so people can just let it become second nature.
I like this video. Did you know that I'm actually blind completely question if you didn't I am, I am blind. I can't see anything. I was just searching RUclips with voiceover for audio description, and I just saw this video and I was like oh man this is cool. Thank you.
This is wonderful, thank you, James, for posting this video. Now that Section 508 is going to require audio descriptions for U. S. government videos I'm hoping that RUclips/Google/Alphabet enables audio descriptions. As it is, in testing federal government sites against WCAG 2.0, I am at a loss as to what to tell our developers who use videos. They are trying to be compliant -- but I am not sure their methods are adequate. (They are using CC for both the audio descriptions and the dialogue which makes a lot of unnecessary reading for the Deaf).
I went to see Love, Simon. And they had audio description. It was so amazing! I cried! And the guy that was describing was very good. I really really liked it!
Hello Amy, my friends and I want to create a video show and want to make it accessible. If you don't mind sharing, do you happen to have any favorite video content with the best audio descriptions we could learn from?
@@christopherpreciado7578 of course! Netflix’s originals are all audio described and you can turn on the function by going to the language and subtitles settings. This also goes for Disney+ but I cannot speak for other streaming services. you could also go to the movie theaters if they are open in your area and ask for the headsets with audio description. good luck with your show! :)
James, you inspired me to put together an accessible video with Audio descriptions and custom CC. In addition, it is for the new Terminator Dark Fate Adobe contest. I thought it would be a good platform to promote the idea of accessible video content. Thanks for being an inspiration!
Thank you for sharing this. My friends and I want to make a video show, but we're taking our time to figure out how to make it as accessible as we can before we even do our first episode to ensure we give a real good attempt at building an inclusive foundation. This helps us to plan.
Hello from 2024… I am legally blind and working on a video project and I want to add audio description into it so I can be inclusive… And I’m trying to figure out how to do this… I wish there was a way where you could just push a button and some kind of AI thing which is an audio track that would describe things. Oh well… That idea about having the transcript sync up with the video, but instead of like the transcript, it would be like whatever the described audio track would say is a good idea. I wish they had that.
Yes! I never thought of this! I try to caption my videos but I never thought to do audio descriptions and I should. It would be such a help for cognitive and visually impared
Hi, thanks for making this video. We are new RUclips creators (only two months in), but want to add [AD] to our content so our own kids can enjoy the videos we make about them!
Hey how do I turn of audio description on youtube every time I try to search something with my voice audio description says what I just searched it really makes me mad how to turn off???
Thank you so much for your video. I´m a teacher looking for an audio-description of images to describe picturebooks for children. Do you know any annual or resource I could refer to? Thanks!!
How can i turn it off of my you time movie? I bought 3 movies on you tube. One, Renfield, has these audio captions on and i need to turn it off. It's driving me nuts. Can you help me?
Likely under the CC captions or settings button on the video player. Then look under languages and ensure it’s set to English and not English Audio Descriptions
I have a movie I purchased on RUclips and somehow I turned this feature on. So now it plays the audio description while I'm watching the movie. How do I turn it off this movie. It doesn't do it with my other movies.
They're testing this feature now with certain content. Movies appear to be one when available. Try going to the gear icon on the player and see if there are any Audio or secondary track settings.
@@jamesrath I have tried everything. The movie is Interstellar. Somehow when I wasn't paying attention I some how cut it on. While I see the huge advantage to a sight impaired person, it's driving me bonkers... so to speak. You're the only person to try to help. I turned cc off that didn't work. I get now settings wheel while playing the movie that allows me to change anything.
Hi James, this is a great video! Have you checked out the YouDescribe.org project? It's a crowdsourcing platform for audio descriptions created by the Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute in San Francisco.
i dont see why they cant at least give youtubers the option to add their own audio descriptions. it should be a button like you can turn on and off subtitles

well cc is a thing and it’s kind of the same idea. It can be added by content creators or by public contributions. I guess audio description would follow the sameness model
You really need to refine this audio Descripion process on tv because it is EXTREEMLY annoyng for sighted people to have to listen to the OBVIOUS and it adversely affects the enjoiment of the program
