  • NBC 10 talked to George Mendonsa, a Rhode Islander, in 2013 about the famous "V-J Day in Times Square" photo that showed him kissing a nurse.
The Veterans Affairs secretary recently reversed a department memo that aimed to ban VA displays of the iconic picture.

Greta's(the 21 old dental assistant in the photo) thoughts on this -“I felt that he was very strong. He was just holding me tight. I’m not sure about the kiss. It was just somebody celebrating. It wasn’t a romantic event.

That iconic photo represents the euphoria that American and other Allied military men felt once the end of World War II had been declared with Japan's final unconditional surrender.
People that want to criticize that photo or go on and on about "lack of consent" or "sexual harassment" are the kind of spoiled, entitled, boring, robotic people that have never respected those who fought and died for our freedom.
They never had to go to war, never had to see their fellow soldiers, pilots, marines, and naval men killed, never had to receive official letters on the home front that one's son or sons had been killed or were missing in action or were severely wounded with lifelong suffering ahead of them, and they have no clue regarding what an incredible relief it was for everyone among the Allies that World War II was finally over.
Those who criticize that iconic photo do not deserve the freedoms they enjoy thanks to the sacrifices of those millions of young Allied men and those critics have no understanding of joy, excitement, love, or romance either, I'd bet.

Damn straight!! She doesn't look at all to me like she's not enjoying it! Her eyes are closed instead of staring wildly like she's being accosted, her leg is in the air like she's thrilled to be getting that kiss and in none of the shots I've seen of that kiss, is she using her free arm to hit him or make him stop!!

The woman says she had absolutely no idea who the sailor was, and she didn’t like it.
If he wanted to say thank you to all nurses everywhere, he could’ve just said MUCH more effectively with words and a handshake.

The same ppl outraged over the photo are the same ones that cheer Biden when little girls are trying to pull away when he kisses them or pulls them close and holds them, sniffs em and such. Granted he's done the same thing with adult females, still same ppl cheer for him.

I wrote to George Mendoza back in 2012 and he sent me a wonderful two-page letter about that day in history.
He also included an 8 by 10 photograph signed of him kissing the nurse.
This really tells the story of the excitement enjoy at the end of world war II after Japan surrendered.

Edith Shain was interviewed for the Spirit of 45 Project.
She said, “The picture represents what that day was about. The loyalty, the love, the comradeship, the hopes, the dreams, it was about tomorrow.”
In another interview she said she was willing for him to hold her and kiss her because of what he had done for the country.

That's my parents generation, and they told me that no one knows who they were. It was a random picture taken. Even the photographer never knew, and yet there are those that will try to take credit.

Greta Friedman (née Grete Zimmer; June 5, 1924 - September 8, 2016) was an Austrian-born American who was photographed being grabbed and kissed by Navy sailor George Mendonsa (1923-2019) in the iconic V-J Day in Times Square photograph of 1945 by Life magazine photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt. For decades the photograph was misattributed in popular culture as being that of a nurse, however, Friedman was wearing a white uniform because she was a dental assistant.

This is a great example of the history, culture, heritage, and tradition which has been destroyed like hell by obama, and biden, now the US military is known for stamping out all vestiges of the values those men fought. Today the priorities, and criteria which the military uses for promotion in rank or purely for public "relations promotions are based on race, homosexual identity, behavior, or appearance. I only have one relative who has NOT got the Hell out of the military, and he also will be out soon..
