    When you gots to chill dropped, I was lost for words. The class of 88 was so raw and different. They had everybody riding in a Suzuki and rocking bucket hats. The good ol days. I shot the sheriff, it's my thing,Janeeee. Yo,I thought they would never stop doing Jane. We named our crew hit squad because of them. Great group. Legends

    My friends all thought I was a damn foo cause I bought this album 10 years after it came out in '98 when everyone was into Master P, DMX and Timberland and Magoo. After I first heard "You Gots to Chill" on a radio mixshow I was hooked. I'm still an EPMD and especially an Erick Sermon fan to this day. I even made my own westcoast homage version of "You Gots To Chill" when I made my demo songs.

    I love when West Coast and South and others give props to east coast/ N.Y. rappers. It shows we were all together at one time. EPMD is Long Island N.Y. that's why they were so different. This is why they were compared to Rakim who was also from L.I. ( Public Enemy ,De La Soul) L.I. has a dope but different vibe than the city artist. These artist made hip hop spread all around the world. L.I. rappers brought house party to join city block party. A lot of digging in the crates all around N.Y is what made hip hop survive. If you enjoyed these dudes give them love and props then maybe we can start to bridge

    • @williemo44
      @williemo44 6 лет назад +6

      Yes Indeed. I am from L.A. but I correct folks all the time about that electro funk it started with Zapp and the Troutman brothers from Ohio and P-Funk Parliament from Detroit. Why it resonates so well with my L.A. people? I think its the warmth of the heavy bass and analog moog synths. But like Eric Sermon wisely stated all black households had the same records: facts. EPMD gets props for going to Zapp and XxClan going to Parliament when everyone else was reaching for J.B. (I.e. Public Enemy and Rakim).

      @mikegee3991 6 лет назад +1

      I gotta agree with you!! I listened to rap before EPMD and some of it was good, but when EPMD came out, they took it to another level with the funky samples they used instead of that corny studio music. They also had seamless transitions back and forth and even thought Parris was the better of the two MCs, Erick's speech impediment just added something to those records which I can't explain. How many MCs can use "knick knack paddy wack give a dog a bone" on a rap record and make it sound good!!

    While i’m happy to see a legend give props to other legends I feel a certain way about the interview. It comes off like EPMD was influenced by the west coast sound when that’s far from the truth. In 86-87 cats out here didn’t even have access to what dudes in cali were doing let alone what they sounded like. EPMD like Rakim and Public Enemy were Long Island cats that brought a new style and energy to the game. Back then you couldn’t blow sounding like the next man. Great stuff tho.

      We hear you, Two Cents J. Knowing MC Eiht, we think he was saying that EPMD was influenced by the sounds that were popular out here on the West Coast at that time. Yes, Long Island brought a lot of greatness to the game. Here's Big Tray Deee breaking down the genius of Eric B. & Rakim’s “Paid In Full," ruclips.net/video/pBQdg5WUBFI/видео.html. Unique Access Ent. All of our parents and grandparents listened to funk and old soul music. Parliament wasn’t just a Cali thing. That’s all i’m saying. I’m sure folks down south jammed to it too. It’s like Common said black music is black music and it’s all good. Eiht probably meant no harm but it’s all good. I know it’s other vids I’ll check em out and leave my comments.

    I would honestly put dr.dre as the #1 producer but, Erick sermon is definitely a tie or a very honorable 2nd. He brings the funk to every track he makes and he raps. The headbanger goes so hard.

      I'm pretty sure Erick produced Head Banger. I recall him saying he almost gave that beat to Ice Cube. Parrish was ahead of his time though. He's so lowkey that most people don't even know he produced the majority of their first three albums.

      Keith Witcher Premier is the Boom Bap God!! No better producer at that. Doesn’t make him better than Dre or Erick Sermon.. just a bit different in sound and technique. But there are so many good ones and opinions are all speculative because J Dilla in my opinion is the best to ever do it but there are many many more like QTip, Havoc, Large Professor, Quik, Diamond D, Pete Rock, Just Blaze, Madlib, Marley Marl, Psyco Les and the list goes on! But I can respect your choice on Premo as top dawg! Hell... I got the Gang Starr logo tatted on my right bicep cause I’m a HUGE fan of Premier and GURU

    Gyea!!!!!!!!!!! I knew Eiht would say EPMD. Because "its A Compton Thang" was heavily influenced by EPMD. Eiht and Chill were like the West Coast Erick and Parish. Strictly Business is probably EPMD's best song on that ish. You Gots To Chill is the 2nd best. BUT, I disagree on the best EPMD album. Unfinished Business will wash EVERY EPMD album. Please Listen To My Demo. So Wat Cha Sayin'. Knick Knack Patty Wack. Total Kaos. Too many mf hits!!!!!!!!! Mfs used those same samples to make other hits (Kris Kross Tonite's Tha Night. Dr Dre's Stranded on Death Row. 2Pac's Cali Love). I still got the OG Sleepin Bag Records vinyl and cassette tape of Unfinished Business (not that Priority Records re-issue or any other re-issue bs). I remember back in Queens it was a MUST for me to cop the newest issues of The Source and XXL! But after Pac and Big were killed Hip Hop wasn't fun anymore and I gradually stopped following it. It became stagnant and watered down, it became a FORMULA: Say the N-word in every other line + how many "hoes" you got + how many N!&&a$ you shot + expensive cars and homes you LEASED for the video = RECORD SALES. west coast did not get noticed for the funk that early man come on now...west coast was on some electro shit. Straight outta Compton was full of break beats,sample chops and cuts and scratches not funk. What i think was being implied here is that eric sermon got his funk ideas from a west coast influence,how? in 88 west coast was still learning how to really embrace the culture, lets not forget just a few years earlier The Egyptian Lover was the shit! Even when Ice T dropped his first shit it wasnt necessarily funk heavy. Anyway peace to MC Eight one of them real Gs and peace to all the pioneers of the original format no matter what coast..

      Black Messiah, some of the early N.W.A and Eazy-E records such as "Dope Man" and "We Want Eazy," among others, used Parliament, Bootsy Collins and others. That's about as funky as it gets. To your point, though, it's also true that they used break beats, sample chops, cuts and scratches, too. But they also had heavy funk elements. I also know that Roger Troutman, Zapp and others were some of the West Coast artists' main influences.

    Really? The funk came from James Brown and Parliament. I know both had the same players, yet neither groups were from the west coast. The funk is from the south.

      Parliament was formed on the East Coast, wasn't it? Bootsy was from Cincinnati, right? We think the funk is from everywhere, including the South. Thanks for watching #UniqueAccess.
