I am a percussionist, but I just love the sounds of the low register instruments, the baritone sax is just one of those instruments that I could sit down and listen to all day long. I just wish there were more concertos for baritone saxophones. I equally enjoyed the bass clarinet the contrabassoon and the tuba.
Impressive as it is and believe me I love all things saxophone having played for 40+ years, not sure if the quartet + orchestra sits comfortably(bit like a string quartet with orchestra), but may have to listen to this more than once to "get it". Great to know Philip Glass is writing such material for the sax though.
Great quartet. I bought one of their discs back in the '90's, and they sound better than ever! I don't see a band arrangement of the accompaniment on his website. Someone should make one - hmm... ;-)

Yes, The so called 'minimalist school' has no place on the concert stage alongside serious music. It's pop music pretending to be art music. It's what happens when you show a rock musician how to use a pencil.
Classical music had been a progressive art for centuries. This need for advance, drove some of the most competent composers of the 19th and 20th century to the edge of depression. Somewhere in the 20th century however, it turned into a rock to hide behind for people with various shades of incompetence. As long as you had a stylistic expalation, and a cool word to name your style, you could write the same piece over and over and even get applauded for it. What drives this out of classical music is the lack of effort to better oneself, compared to what one had done the previous day. Which in my humble opinion, is oozing out of the piece.

The sheer amount of chops and endurance to get through a piece like this is far greater than anything Mozart or Beethoven would have written. The demands placed on the performer are rather great. I challenge you to play any of Glass' music every single day and I'm sure you will find ways to better yourself and your playing. If you don't believe this is true then you don't know how to practice, or even what to practice. Good musicians have a certain respect for all genres and subgenres of music even if it isn't aesthetically pleasing, all music serves a purpose and has beauty to the creator. I challenge you to rethink your mislead opinion.

I am confused, these musicians lack what you define as competence although they are playing music on level in which the skill of the musician is expressed through the composer's skill at writing parts which glorify each instrument. Now, I used to word "express" because music is a means of human expression, which will change with the eras, as you mentioned; but nevertheless it is still very powerful expression through music. You sprinkled a whole lot of nothing and unrelated facts in your statement which simply concluded with your opinion. What lets YOU justify that these are "lacking" musicians. or better, why should you?
