UCL or Champions League is a yearly tournament featuring the best teams in europe. It's the highest level of club football. The final is next month. The World Cup, where players play for their country instead of their club, starts in november. It's only held once every 4 years. USA and Canada are both qualified this time.

The UCL is the UEFA Champions League, the most prestigious trophy in European club football and arguably the most prestigious in the world alongside the South-American Copa Libertadores.
    Some context:
    - Bill Shankly started the most successful era of Liverpool FC, winning several national trophies and the UEFA Cup; another infamous quote by him is "There are two great teams on Merseyside. Liverpool and Liverpool reserves."
    - Pelé, Zidane, Del Piero, Kahn, Beckham, Schwinsteiger, Gerrard, Totti were all legends of their respective clubs and among the best players ever lived
    - the Iniesta goal against Netherlands won Spain their first FIFA World Cup ever (2010); that generation of players also won two UEFA European Cups + several club competitions and it's arguably one of the best National Teams ever witnessed in football
    - Wiltord's and Trezeguet's goals won France the 2000 UEFA European Cup; Trezeguet's goal is called a 'golden goal' because at that time the rules said that the first team to score in extra time would win the match
    - Rooney, a Manchester United legend, scored that spectacular bicycle kick against Manchester City, the city rivals of United, who also were contending them the Premier League; ManUtd won that derby thanks to that goal; you can also see Sir Alex Ferguson, United's manager for 27 years and the most winning manager of all times, celebrate the goal-it was his last season
    - Ibrahimovic not only scored that bicycle kick from an insane distance-which won him the Puskas Award-, but also scored FOUR goals in that match
    - Netherland vs. Spain took place at the 2014 FIFA WC and was the replay of the previous' WC final; Netherlands demolished Spain 5-1 and de facto eliminated them in the first round; the Robben's solo goal and the flying header by Robin van Persie come from that match
    - Bergkamp's goal vs. Newcastle is considered one of the most technically beautiful goals in the history of the Premier League still nowadays
    - Ronaldo's goal in 2017 Spanish Super Cup won Real Madrid the trophy against Barcelona and replied to a penalty scored by his rival forever, Leo Messi, just 3 minutes earlier; the rivalry between Barça and Real Madrid is one of the strongest in European football (also for political reasons)
    - Bale scored a brace (two goals) in 2018 UCL final, including that spectacular bicycle; Real Madrid won their third UCL in a row and the 13th (thirteenth!) overall
    - Milito scored a brace for Inter Milan in the 2010 UCL final; they hadn't reach the final since 1967 and hadn't won it since 1965 (!); they also won the treble in the 2009-10 campaign, meaning they lifted three major trophies: national title, national cup, UCL (the first and only Italian team to do that)
    - Pelé's header against Italy in the 1970 WC final is remarkable for his elevation and also because Brasil won the third WC title, meaning they also gained the right to permanently keep the Rimet Cup
    - Roberto Carlos' free kick against France is still one of the most spectacular ever taken
    - Juninho Pernambucano was one of the best ever when it came to free kicks
    - Salah's goal against Everton won him-albeit questionably-the 2018 FIFA Puskas Award
    - Beckham scored that free kick at the last minute of the last match of the qualifying rounds for 2002 WC, sending England to the WC; he captained his NT in those years
    - Götze won Germany the 2014 WC in extra time
    - Agüero(ooooooooooooh!)'s last-minute goal against QPR won ManCity their first Premier League in 44 years, against Manchester United: they both ended the season with the exact same amount of points, but City won because they scored more goals
    - Pavard won the prize for the most beautiful goal in the 2018 WC (and also the WC itself)
    - Ronaldo's bicycle kick against Juventus should have won him the 2018 Puskas Award
    - Maradona's hand of God was effectively scored with his hand; he also scored his other most famous goal, the goal of the century, in the same match
    - Leicester, a small club promoted to First Division just a couple of years before, incredibly won the 2015-16 Premier League and Jamie Vardy became their most representative player
    - Bergkamp's goal against Argentina at the 1998 WC is famous because the Dutch commentator went crazy for it-and also because it was a fine goal, obviously
    - Chelsea equalized the 2012 UCL final in the last minutes and then won it after penalties; they were playing against the much more strong side of Bayern Munich... in Bayern's stadium! It was also Chelsea's first ever UCL title and came at the end of a disastrous campaign: they had to fire their manager due to poor results and hire an interim manager to finish the season; they also had to face Barcelona, probably the best team in the world, in the semis. Didier Drogba was their most representative player. (By the way, Bayern won the treble next season-and Chelsea won the UEFA Cup)
    - Maradona's goal of the century vs. England (1986 WC) and Messi's replication vs. Getafe (2006-07 La Liga)
    - Ronaldinho's brace for Barcelona in that Clásico is one of the most insane matches ever played by a singular player and earned him an unprecedented standing ovation by Real Madrid's stadium, the Santiago Bernabéu
    - AS Roma reached their first UCL semi-finals since 1985 by winning 3-0 against Barcelona, who had won 4-1 in the first leg
    - Greece winning their first ever UEFA European Cup in 2004 against Portugal, who also hosted the tournament
    - Robben had already played two UCL finals without winning, and Borussia Dortmund, Bayern's national rivals, were an incredibly strong team that year (2012-13): they had won the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal (Germany's national cup) the previous year
    - one of the most INSANE UCL finals ever: Liverpool were losing 3-0 vs. AC Milan, who also had an incredibly strong team that year, and managed to score 3 goals in like 6 minutes, equalizing the result; and then, Liverpool won the penalty kicks shootout; they hadn't won the UCL since 1985; Liverpool and AC Milan met again in the 2007 UCL final, won by AC Milan (2-1)
    - Zidane's 2006 WC was his last dance as a player; he captained France to the final and retired after the tournament; sadly, he is also remembered for his trouble with Marco Materazzi during the final, which resulted in Zidane hitting Materazzi's chest with his head
    - Lewandowski's five-goals in 9 minutes is still something inexplicable
    - Thuram scored only two goals with France, both in the match which qualified them for the 1998 WC, which France went on to win
    - Barça lost 4-0 to PSG in the first leg; but they managed to overthrow the result and by winning 6-1 they qualified for the round of 8; nobody had ever overthrow a 4-0 passive in UCL before
    - Tottenham were losing 3-0 on aggregate but managed to overthrow the result in 45 minutes thanks to Lucas Moura's hat-trick and reached their first ever UCL final (they lost to Liverpool)
    - Germany's 7-1 demolition of Brazil was the heaviest defeat for a hosting NT in WC history and the heaviest home defeat ever for Brazil; that match has been nicknamed Mineiraço, a pun on Brazil's lose to Uruguay in the 1950 WC (the Maracanaço), which was also played in Brazil and that they lost unexpectedly; after having annihilated Brazil, Germany went on to win the 2014 WC
    - Liverpool lost 3-0 to Barcelona in the first round, but managed to win 4-0 with a last-minute goal by Origi in the second, qualifying for the final which they won against Tottenham
    - France won their first WC ever defeating the reigning Champions, Brazil, 3-0; it may also be the largest win in the history of WC finals
    - Mbappé scored a brace in the 2018 WC final; he was like 20 at the time; last year, he also became the second-ever player to score a hat-trick in a WC final

What makes football exciting is that it is hard to score any goal against a well - organised defence, and so at the top level, tactics and build up play , are crucial.

A big part of the of what makes more modern players look more skillful is the construction of the ball especially how light they are now and also how light modern boots are which allow them pull of stuff that wasn't possible 30 or more years ago. That combined with better fitness and diets allowing players to have the stamina to be skillful for longer in a match aswell as longer careers with more outfield players playing into their late 30s.

One really sad outcome i will always remember...and surprised its not been reacted to (unless ive missed it somehow 🥴) is the Death of Andrés Escobar in 1994 after accidentally scoring an own goal for Colombia in the World Cup...actually playing the USA...
Also Ronaldinho had an older brother, Roberto, who was a great player....and his story is quite sad & probably explains why he isnt mentioned as much...look up : "How This Football Legend Became A Criminal". Lots of off shoots 🙄 that can be reacted too..there's also been quite a few sudden fatalities of a player on the pitch...awful and almost killed inc Messi & Ronaldo in : "Football Players Who ALMOST DIED". 🤘🏻🙃

UCL = Eufa Champions League. It takes the top 3-4 teams of all the best European leagues (Germany, England, France, Spain, Italy and more) and puts them all against eachother in a group stage to knockout stage tournament. It's the biggest trophy in club football, IMO the only trophy bigger than the UCL is the World Cup and many would argue the UCL is more competitive than the World Cup.

MLS may not be Prem standard, but every good league starts somewhere. i really think if the US even semi embraces Football, the standard will shoot up. You guys have the money, man power and facilities (or the money to build them) and also you are probably quite attractive to Central American players and if the league gets better I could see the MLS becoming the league South Americans move too before going to the Prem, which means you will have some of the best players in the world coming through your league. Who knows. in time it could even become one of the major world leagues.
I also think the US mentality too sport (high work rate, intensity, physicality as well as technical focus) really is very close to the UK football culture, and the English Prem is the best league in the world so US already has the mentality for the league to rise!!!
the biggest thing that needs to change though? is the Amateur level game. I knew a guy who came from the US to UK. He was a semi pro Football player in the US. He was a good player, but he was blown away by the standard in the UK.
He was playing in the lower divisions of the Amateur game here, and he said the standard even there was closer to semi pro/pro in the US. When that Amateur level in the US gets closer to the major footballing nations, you will see genuinely great US players
(having said this, I dont think people , even from footballing countries realise just how good the Amateur level is here in the UK, its crazy, I have honestly seen players that would walk into top pro teams, and they are "nobodys" and never got the chance to be scouted etc or screwed it up themselves via drugs/crime etc)

What many Americans who describe football as boring have not understood is that football does not live from the number of goals, but from the tension to the way there. And when one is achieved, all the tension falls off of you in a thrust. This can be better than sex or even with a jump from the plane.
In basketball, in principle, only the last minute of the game is exciting and only when both are close with the points. Tension doesn't come up with me when points are scored every 10 seconds.

Hello. I have a recommendation. Defender's tends to be a little bit left out in those compilations. So I recommend you watch this video about the greatest defener of all time, Paolo Maldini: ruclips.net/video/9h9rnCJCYIc/видео.html
Then I suggest discovering a young defender, Pierre Kalulu. A little bit of context for this player: he's a french player trained in Lyon but who wasn't offered a pro contract before Milan offered him one. So he actually started his pro career at Milan. He is now one of our best players, elected best young player of Serie A this year, and we bought him only 480,000€. Here's a video on him: ruclips.net/video/cUE92XnWgmc/видео.html

It is interesting how some goals hit differently when you know what is going on. That Aguero goal at 7:19 it does not look it is spectacular. But imagine you play the league for 9 months and 40 games, it is the last minute of the last game, and the results in other games mean if you don't score you will finish second and not win the league. That is probably the last attack of the game. And Aguero does that. Man City wins the Premier league.

4:50 you are underestimating how difficult the goal is in the red and white kit, honestly , my favourite goal of all time, never seen anyone else score a goal quite like that before or since, and you are wrong generally about the skills. Go watch a Ronaldinho video, Peak skill level beats anyone in the last 30 years (even Messi, if we are talking peak) I have never seen anyone play quite like Ronaldinho and he retired a while ago (2015) Bergkamp (dude i the red and white) is one of the slickest players to ever play the game.
Then there is the likes of Maradona, who did what Messi does now, but with inferior boots, on inferior pitches (potted and clumped), with heavier footballs that moved in the air less, in a far more dangerous era for attackers, where he litterally had defenders trying to injure him. People try and foul Messi, but Maradona had multiple defenders actually trying to snap his leg, one actually succeeded when he was young and broke his ankle.
The fitness, and aerobic aspect has for sure increased, but the skill factor I dont think has improved, its shifted. There is certain types of passes that just are not a thing now.
If you want to see the best long passer ever? its not a current player, it was Xabi Alonso, you want to see the best free kick taker ever? it was Juninho again, retired, you want to see the best finisher of all time? it was probably Romario, again retired the best long shots in open play of all time ? Hagi, again retired, best flair/trick/skill player of all time? Ronaldinho, retired, best complete forward Luiz Ronaldo (NOT Cristiano, teh original Brazillian Ronaldo R9) again retired (and had he not got injured he would probably be the GOAT as peak Ronaldo R9 was better than Messi) the best dribbler? he is still playing, its Messi.
Also positions have changed, like the "number 10" position is not really used any more, but was used loads in the 70's 80's and 90's. Certain tactics lean towards certain types of players
For instance the 90's football was far more adept in attack than the 00's football in general, however the defence and fitness of 00's football was far higher level, but you could argue the skill level had dropped in that era, despite some of the greatest players coming out of the era.
Then there was "tika taka" which is all short passing and movement, that ignores long passing, crossing and aerial play, which are huge parts of the game.
Now we are in the high fullbacks, high press era, which is actually just a more refined version of English 80's football with better fitness and better defence tactics
Dont mistake better pitches, higher fitness levels and more attacker protection from referee's (its far less violent, being an attacker used to be quite dangerous) for increased skill.
Go watch Garrincha or Pele, you will see as early as the 50's a lot of the skill moves were being used back then.
The pitches, protection from refs and higher fitness have made skill moves a lot easier.
In the 60's 70's and 80's you were far more likely for some defender to just kick through you like a Muay Thai leg sweep and get away with it, if you tried skill moves, than now. Which is one of the main reasons it looks cleaner , because the defenders know they cant just elbow the attacker/or try and snap his leg and get away with it. Its not that it was legal to do so back then, but it was far more "tolerated"
It's kind of like the MJ Le Bron debate,, Le Bron is great, but MJ was different gravy and although Le Bron is probably physically more athletic (maybe, as he is stronger but certainly not as agile) MJ was clearly more skill full (I am old enough to remember MJ at his peak, and the likes of Maradona in football)
And FTR my goat is NOT Messi, its Maradona, as I think all round he was a better player and just as skilled (with actually a wider skillset)

04:33, i agreed and disagreed with u. Cuz back in the day, '60s, 70's, 80's... is not that they didnt have the skills that players in nowdays have... back in the day, everything was different, pitches, balls, football boots, security, training session and etc... its a completly different era. The ball rn is soft, back there was heavy... Actually if u really think about it, like Pelé, why ppl say that he is the best ever? Cuz in that time, he could do things that ppl only could do in 30 years from that data. He changed the history... I know is stupid to talk that, but, if u put a great player nowdays, to play in the past, they would probably be a regular player or even a good one, but not the same level that he is rn.

UCL is the UEFA Champions League.
You Americans like the idea of competition, right? The forge of battle, last man standing, that kind of thing?
In every European country the national football league is administered by the national football association. They do all the administrative work and organize the match schedule that determines who will be the national champions at every level in the league -- from the weekend amateur competition all the way up to the top professional competition (the Premier League, Serie A, Primera Division, Bundesliga, etc.). During the season the clubs at each level play each other. Lose too many games, you get kicked down a level. Win more points than the other clubs, be victorious in the arena often enough, you're champion at your level and you move up a level next season. Unless you win in the highest level -- there's no more "up", but your club is national champion, the best of the best of the country that year. Can't do better than that, right?
Wrong. Because all the national associations are part of UEFA. And one of things UEFA does, is organize an international, European tournament called the Champions' League. Win the national championship in your country and, much like Chalie got from Willie Wonka, your club has a golden ticket next season to play in the UCL (in addition to the national league).
You want to talk about a forge? The UCL pits all of last seasons national championships against each other in a tournament. First in pools, after that in knock-out rounds, until the final game with the last two teams remaining.
This game is the ultimate annually occurring game in football. Played in a stadium in front of around 50.000 people -- a pittance compared to the more or less 1.000.000.000 watching on TV around the world. One game, winner takes all. Win here and for one year your team will be the best of the best of the best.
And that is the UCL. 😉

Big American business interest in the states, the TV networks, football teams Baseball, Basketball ect feel threatened by football because of its global appeal, they know they can't match it so they adopt a little Murican approach whereby they applaud and encourage ignorance about football amongst the American sports fan, add to that the famous American attention span or lack of one and you can see that even thee most spectacular sport in the world is gunna have its hands full getting anywhere in the United States

i have to disagree on one point pal most players today dont compare to the legends like Pele , Maradona , zidane , Socrates , Zico , cruyff , Ronaldinho , Beckenbauer , Eusebio , Best , Van Basten Muller , Gullit , Sanchez , Rossi , Keegan , Rivelino , Matthaus , Charlton , Romario , Baresi , Puskas , Maldini , Brazilian Ronaldo and so many more.
The only players today to get anywhere near these guys is few and far between Ronaldo and messi being two in their prime of course. I have watched football since i was a kid in the 1970s so have seen a lot both good and bad but the talent now is not as good as it was it just looks that way.
Just look at barca and real madrid rebuilding psg failing as usual. Only 2 teams in the prem in liverpool and city who are streets ahead of the rest.
You have to ask yourself this if football is in such a good place why was there an attempt at a superleague that was always going to fail.

TO be completely honoust none of the players of today would be playing in the early 2000s 1990s 1980s or god forbid the 1970s or late 60s .
As they wouldnt last . there is a reason why players retired at age 32 and deemed to old and why players ended their carreers in their late 20s as frankly their bodies couldnt take it any more . In the 60s it was so rough that they introduced red cards after a match that was more of a battle at the world cup called the battle of santiago.
Players like messi and ronaldo wouldnt have a chance as they would be chopped down by old school defenders . Ronaldo got the tail end of the old school defenders in 2000s and he was crying allot , as defenders just buldozed and did every thing appart of killing to prevent an atacking player of scoring . Keepers would come out of the goals like a wrecking ball jumping catching the ball rolled up with knees forward in to the atacking players . not alowed any more . The world cup match between Brazil and Netherlands in 1974 deemed the roughest match only had 1 sending of .
The 80s and 90s produced the most skilled and violent defenders midfielders and strikers yet , Broken noses concusions broken leggs , torn muscles where common .
Only subtitutions alowed up till the mid 90s where they introduced a 3rd sub for inured keepers . then they made it genera 3 substutitutions
Now they got 5 substitutions and since the 90s the regulations changed to the disgusting 3 points a win rule thought off by that brexit nations called england .
And a rule change that had maximum of 3 foreign players on the pitch . all that changed , to unlimited foreign players .
And they changed the champions league where you used to have won the league and become a champion to play in the champions league now 2nd 3rd 4th placed loser teams are allowed to play .
Ronaldo Messi wouldnt even have won that many champions league titles or earn the balon dór .
No old school much harder tougher and more enjoyable to watch .
