Any sportsman staying in public flats will not stand a chance to win an Olympic medal. This is a hard truth you must accept.
Firstly, u need someone with that very deep passion, determination, commitments & discipline from a very young age and daring to dream to be an Olympian. That is very very hard to come by with our very small population. Secondly, the need of full support from both parents, lovingly providing the mental support / encouragement, & financial support / sacrifices for your kid to make his dream come true. Finally, the govt need to provide more financial support and trading including overseas training by Olympian coaches

They bought some top talent from China and sped up their citizenship. Forming a medal winning football or basketball team with a cheque book is difficult. But thats exactly what one needs in nearly every other sport. But in Singapores example with Joseph one can argue they didnt offer him cash and citizenship when he was at his peak. talk so much but just focus on the main problem. the biggest factor for sports success is self motivation. singapore government and society focus too much on economic success. sports achievement doesn't bring enough financial rewards. the risk reward factor doesn't justify the motivation and effort for an individual to devote his life to sports. to be make a decent living, a singaporean athlete has to be the best in the WORLD, not just in singapore. whereas in many other professions in singapore, you can make a decent living just being good in Singapore competing with the small population of 5 million without even needing to be the best. but in sports, you have to compete with the entire world and be the best. and the local talent pool is already so small because singapore has one of the smallest population. don't forget, age is also a factor. in other fields, you can still work and earn even until your 50s and 60s. in sports, you are already planning on your retirement when you reach your 30s with more than half your lifespan to go. a sports career is not economically viable especially when you live in one of the most expensive cities in the world.
