To be fair, you can set your local cache to be quite large. I would expect that it would not download "over and over again". But that does not change the fact that there is barely any _baseline_ amount of data with the default install.

Yesterday...a fail, no question. This morning the Sim started up perfectly fine, I wanted to see if it was fixed....I had to leave for work. Came home around 5PM ET USA, around 5:30pm it loaded up, I actually had a very good enjoyable flight...(still getting used to new controls). But this was short lived, Loaded up the Beluga at Newark, the plane had no sound and the sim totally froze shortly after take off. Restart, new plane at JFK, again total freeze after the "zoom in" animation.
RESTART after 10-15 min. Chose another Airbus (the aircraft selection screen was a jittery mess), but I chose another Airbus. Takeoff from LAX was ok, flying fine for 10 min, then loss of all controls of the plane, no flaps, couldn't throttle down, once again, sim froze up. Decided to try ONE final time, I only got to the Free Flight Globe screen before the entire sim crashed to desktop.
So...yeah, this is real enjoyable! 😠

The people who want to go all out on sim games won't mind buying a new SSD for just 1 game and the cloud could be there for everyone else. The option to download locally may even save them some money in server costs in the long run.

As a member of a hardcore virtual airline that is 20+ years old, we all knew this would happen. Simulators, even XPlane and P3D, require 3rd party developers and extra content to become useful simulators. And as the SDK was not available to anyone but official partners, the launch could never be good. Server issues aside.
Also, to say "MSFS2020 is not much better today, if at all, from the day it launched" is a wild comment Jay. There is some amazing 3rd party planes and sceneries. Also, a lot of the issues that existed (admitedly for way too long) have been ironed out by micorsoft. But that is why 2024 is such an annoyance. MSFS2020 was just getting good, and now all focus has shifted to another platform.
Edit: All sims need 3rd party content to be good, has always been that way and MSFS2020 and 2024 have been cheaper and come with more out of the box than any other simulator ever has actually. Go pay almost double for XPlane and P3D, open them up with no addons and tell me MSFS2024 is horrible value for money.

It is cosiderably more than a minor version upgrade. The visuals are clealy superior, and this was only made possible by better utlizing multiple processors. If they nad not improved the CPU multiple core utilization, you would not be able to get the level of detial provided by 2024 without using an industrial grade processor. The reality is that there are a lot of issues with it, but I expect they will make updates to fix these things.

In a day and age where hard drives (and SSDs) are literally dirt-cheap, WHY are companies getting away with the argument that they want to conserve disk space on the client? I genuinely don't get that. Also, there are games using like 100GB of data, like the old MS Flight Simulator from 2020, where the official content (if you download everything) already uses like 420GB of space.
Also, if you think about having to transfer gigabytes of data (and potentially the same data) each and every time, this uses a heck of a lot of power, not only in the data center, but also on the way from the data center to you.

It amazes me how many people don't realise cloud service is the only way to manage the whole world being in the game...
I'm the first to hate on games that require you to be online even to play offline and I have quite a slow connection, so of course it's a big disadvantage for me, but seriously anyone of you think you have a few petabytes of storage laying around?
Google is free, go check the dimension of their server just to hold game world.
Also I have a 5700X3D with 32GB 3733 MT/s and a 6700XT with 35-40 Mb/s (bit) connection and could fly around for an hour without any crash or game breaking bugs (only on one landing the plane somehow popped and got into a vertical position).
Some textures of some airports took a but to load but remember my connection is dogshit.

Something I've been repeatedly mentioning in the lead up to this release in various video, is that the a large portion of that increased multi-threading usage is because of the content streaming. It's only ever going to work right for the amount out users they are going to serve is with compression. The point of those additional threads is to handle decompression in real-time. That's also why the 2700X is suggested where it is compared to Intel. It's just way better at decompression than everything Intel up to the 9900K. Even the 4790K remained competitive with the 8700K in pure gaming benches of the time, which explains the jump to a 10700K.

Honestly I’ve had no issues, except for the first 8 hours, since then the game was running flawlessly and I’ve already had loads of fun with it. It’s great. Sure, sometimes the wait times are a little worse because of the server, but I’m happy with waiting 5-10 seconds extra on every loading rather than dealing with the awfully huge installation of MSFS2020. The improvements from 2020 show immediately and I really think the wave of negativity isn’t very fair. Also I only have 100 Mbps connection, but it’s enough for an almost flawless 1440p ultra settings experience. The one issue I have with the cloud dependence of this game is the fact that we don’t know how long is Microsoft going to keep this cloud online and when will we lose access, but as a game pass user I’m not that concerned.

You should have a look at what your Dynamic LOD is set to as it’s attached to your FPS. If you set it to 30, it’ll increase your LOD to attain 30 FPS and adjust based on if you’re in the air or on the ground. If you’re not going to set a manual LOD, set something like 70 or 80. As another option, you could disable the Dynamic LOD and set your terrain and object LOD manually. Start at 100 and increase as necessary to achieve a certain FPS. Also, the setting for DLSS, FSR, and DLAA is where you see the TAA option in your menu. You can swap between any of those options. Hope this helps and you have no idea how cool it is to see you flight simming brotha!!!

Before handing out strong opinions like that it would be smart to read at least some of the statements Asobo made before the release.... They said the marketplace won't launch with the game because they offer full backwards compatibility and want to give the 3rd party developers some time to check all their products in the new sim before going live. Also, it would absolutely not have been possible, to graft any of the new features or graphical fidelity onto the 2020 sim, that engine was maxxxxed tf out and not taking advantage of modern hardware. They completely botched the cloud service component and underestimated demand, that is embarrassing for the world's second biggest cloud service provider and annoying to everyone who plays the game. From a Microsoft Azure PR standpoint alone I'll bet they'll fix that ASAP.
As soon as that is ironed out I think we'll see a really good sim and a big improvement over 2020. You will always have some problem with procedurally created worlds and as with 2020 they will be hard at work fixing them. This is the most complex digital representation of the Earth in existence right now. It might take a second to work perfectly and scale to this massive demand. Calling it a pile of dog crap a day after launch seems wildly premature.

When taking off or landing in DCS on a multiplayer server, you actually have to look because there is damage and crashes. Damaging tires on take off or landing adds to the realism. On the bright side, you can customize your identity in MSFS 2024 now , no longer a character or an avatar. Back to DCS !
PS I would have tested this sim in a fast jet at low level flight to see the how the texture streaming is.

  • @Bellthorian
    @Bellthorian 8 часов назад +37

MSFS 2024 is NOT a simcade......it using three dimensional computational fluid dynamics to model aircraft specifically designed for it. This will make aircraft flight dynamics far more realistic than the 2D physics model that X-Plane 12 uses. Also flying X-plane does not count as simulator hours, that is total BS. Flight schools have advanced simulators that can cost up to 100,000 dollars, they MAY run X-Plane but it is the physical sim hardware you are practicing with not X-Plane. I have MSFS 2020, 2024 and X-Plane 12 and X-plane 12 is garbage. The A2A Simulations Piper Comanche is far more realistic than ANYTHING available on X-Plane. In MSFS 2020 there are different tiers of aircraft from super casual to study level. Study level planes are as good or better than ANYTHING in X-Plane. I will also point out that in small GA aircraft where you are flying in VFR conditions X-Plane can not compete with MSFS. When I took my discovery flight in a Piper Archer 2, I had trained in it on the sim and it was crazy how similar both experiences. The only thing that really stuck out as being different was how hard the rudder pedals were to move in the real aircraft. Visually, in the air, I knew EXACTLY where I was at all times because MSFS looked almost identical to the real thing. I could navigate visually because I was totally familiar with the area. I could take 10,000 people from Baltimore and put them in X-Plane 12 over Baltimore and not ONE of them would say hey, that's Baltimore.

So,their argument in no. 1 is,
    - they improved loading times by moving the data source from local storage to cloud storage. I never knew that you have better performance when using Ethernet instead of PCIe as your data transport channel
    - they kept the minimum specs as low as possible by lowering the minimum storage requirements. Again, I never knew that one big impediment was the storage, and not the CPU or GPU what I was thinking and experienced when I was a poor student.
So thanks MS to correct my false assumptions and for empower all the people who can’t afford a big enough HDD / SSD, which costs max. the same as your game your game. What are the MONTHLY costs for a decent enough Internet connection again? They surely will applaud you on launch day, or on weekends, or on days, new DLCs are released, or when your Internet sucks. Really, thank you.

this game was purely a "release to maintain IP" game, or a "we are cutting old game server/suport buy new game please"
the "recommended" specs stuff is not because the game needs it to run well, it needs it because they just didnt optimise the game, this becoming an extremely common trend, take dragons dogma 2, it STILL hasn't received a comprehensive optimisation patch so it just doesn't run at more than 30 fps even on top end hardware -.-
if a game launches and doesn't have fortnight or gatcha game money then companies will just abandon the game and only push patches to meet a quota even if it doesn't fix anything -.-

I never played flight sim 10 like you did, however I played flight sim 2020 and used it to practise on before real flights during my Private pilot license days and I have to disagree with you in terms of how accurate it felt. It's pretty damn accurate! I practiced on flight sim before my very first flight and I was surprised at how similar it felt to the actual plane in real life. Obviously the motion aspect is missing as I just have the logitech yolk, rudder pedals and the throttle, mixture setup. but in terms of how the plane handles and flies. Id say they got it pretty spot on. The "Government approved" flight sim we used at the flight school....that felt like garbage. I am yet to test out 2024 flight sim but definitely looking forward to it.
I would like to point out that I never used flight sim as a game to have fun and fly around and explore like most people would, I use it purely as training for actual flying in my spare time, so my experience of the game is definitely going to differ to most people who want the "fun" aspect out of the game.

I have never played a single flight simulator game, but it holds a special place in my heart. When I was in 8th grade in the year 2000 in India, I went to my cousins place. My cousin had moved to another state for college so his mom was getting rid of his old stuff. In the pile of things she was getting rid of, I saw a copy of Flight simulator. When my Aunt say I was interested in it, she gave it to me. I took it home and tried to install it in my pc. Unfortunately it didn't work. Then I saw another cd hidden in the cover itself. This turned out to be a film of the adult variety. I watched it and also showd it to my close friends. I was a hero in their eyes for the rest of the year. 😂

As a CFI/CFII I can tell you no one should be using a desktop flight sim to "learn the physics of flying" none do a good job at this. Simply put you're never going to get a accurate feeling of flying sitting in a office chair with a $50 plastic yoke or stick. They are great for learning procedures and IFR related things so it really doesn't matter which sim is used.

Jay! Jay!!!! Really, you should stick to Hardware, or perhaps some shoot'em up game. You really have no clues about simulations. The fact you are using an Xbox controller on your PC says a lot. Yes, launch day was TERRIBLE, but before Steam, downloading games on launch day was also a nightmare. Couple of days later and after upgrading from MSFS2020, I truly love it. Loading time on my 2.5 gig fiber, is not too bad, and once is loaded, switching missions is a breeze, much faster than before. The graphics are MANY MANY times better, if you have a 4090 with a latest CPU and you jack up ALL settings to ultra, including terrain level of detail.
On MSFS 2020 there were times after a MAJOR update, that the Store was not available for a while. Wait a couple of day until they finish filtering out the 3rd party packages that are not compatible with the sims. Only tell the arcade crowd not to buy, we simmers know better. No freezes on my PC.

Depends on the resolution you want. People want realistic with less than a meter resolution and don't realize what the data cost of that is, even with the way Microsoft is doing it. The whole reason the bridges are solid is because the whole world is a mesh covered with satellite texturing. They can't make bridges without having a separate mesh of the bridge which would be even more data that would need to be transferred.
Sure it looks nice, but it might end up creating less enjoyment because you start to lose things like bridges, or they can't tell the difference between moored ships and the terrain.
