But 172 is class B, why is the subnet mask 255.255.255.0 instead of 255.255.0.0?

Hi friend
255.255.0.0 is the default subnet mask of class B address.
Here we are subnetted and using that subnet mask with 254 usable IP Address on each Subnet.

When I click on the router I cannot see the CLI. How come?

You can enable CLI from the Menu! Goto Options -> Preferences -> Show/Hide. There you can uncheck the Hide CLI.
