#2 - The lighter with the sideways flame I would guess was designed with pipe smokers in mind. It would seem to be ideal for pipes.

It looks like, on that first lighter, it's designed to be opened with a coin, rather than a screwdriver. A lot of portable products, which need maintenance are designed to be accessed like that. Since people are more likely to have a coin with them than a screwdriver.
