J'ai écouté avec bonheur mille autre versions de cosi fan tutte,, qui de tous les operas est mon unique, mon préféré mais cette version est, à mon sens, celle qui rend le mieux compte de ce chef d'œuvre. Please give an example of other composers, for I think what you say is simply not true. As an example of something that only Mozart could write I bring up the finale of the first act of Don Giovanni in which three orchestras play three completely independent tunes, and yet it sounds so divinely right. This shows a combinatorial genius in Mozart’s music to which no other composer has ever come close. Only Mozart had the genius to write such complex yet beautiful music. If you disagree, give an example that even comes close.

I love Mozart. I am a classically trained singer who does crossover - that means I sing opera, operetta, and musical theatre styles. And Mozart. He is simply in a league of his own. I can't really put it into words, but when I sing his music it just feels different in my voice and my head. Cosi fan Tutte is my favourite; I am working on one of the arias for my diploma right now, and after that I hope to make a recording of only Mozart arias. So happy and yet so ethereal at the same time - just such perfect music! 😊
I discovered it live as my first opera experience at 15yo. I just went back to watch it as a 30yo birthday gift from my mom and myself. I had listened to recordings in the meantime but still got the chills and the most childish smile for the whole time. I will never get tired of it either. I hope I can show it to my daughter when she will be 15 ❤
I played this Opera twice in the orchestra. The first time when I was at Stanford in 1976-first violin. The second time with Livermore opera. I love Cosi Fan Tutte the music is just gorgeous but the lyrics are a work of genius by Lorenzo da Ponte as well. It is genuinely funny, a sophisticated well crafted Comedy. With good actors singers it's a marvellously enjoyable opera

I watch this opera for the first time.A very good production.I really enjoy the self-ironical moments and the gags in it 🎉The sweetest sounding arias are placed in it.Nice performance, everyone.
This was just wonderful. Having only seen operas under duress and never enjoyed them, despite the fabulous music; the warbly voices have alway put me off. But what sublime singing here and I would gladly see this again. Just LOVED it. Thank you.
Welcome to beginning to understand the greatness of the Opera art form. Opera is musical theater, yet superior to it. Why? Because in theater of three people were to speak simultaneously no one would be able to understand a single word they say. Yet in Opera we have trios, quartets, quintets, sextets in which 3, 4, 5, 6 people sing at the same time, yet it makes perfect sense. In addition the music can express every human emotion that even the greatest acting cannot convey in theater. This is particularly true in the Operas of Mozart. He had an extraordinary ability to express every human feeling in the music.
Great cast (adore Rainer Trost) and you can't beat James Eliot Gardiner as a conductor. Beautiful quality recording and the subtitles help introduce this some what complex plot to anyone unfamiliar with this opera, Thanks!

I'm singing Guglielmo professionally for the first time later this month, and Rod Gilfry is my voice teacher -- sometimes the stars really align! I've watched a ton of Così productions at this point, and I'm convinced no one sings the role better.
This production of Cosi Fan Tutte is so adorable and funny. A perfect musical performance of orchestra and cast that is very entertaining. And it has a seemingly unscripted moment that becomes fateful for Rodney Gilfry (Guglielmo) when he kisses Amanda Roocroft's (Fiordiligi) hand at the end of her performing N14 Aria in Scene 11, at 1:03:21 (this probably was agreed between the two before the performance without letting their fellow cast members know). The moment he kisses her hand Claudio Nicolai (Don Alfonso, in the background watching them) looks surprised as if he did not expect the move. Roocroft, in her character defending her love and appalled by Gilfry's audacity takes a swing and hits him in the face so hard that he runs out of the frame. Nicolai's and Rosa Mannion's (Dorabella) jaws drop in disbelief. Moments later we see Roocroft shaking her hand in pain from her hit. Eirian James (Despina) can't believe what just happened but enjoys the episode. When Gilfry is back and approaches Roocroft she raises her hand and he immediately protects his face. Looks like he did not want take another hit. All this goes over very fast and the cast's performance is so professional that the whole event is barely noticable.
I think it’s possible both kiss+slap were improvised. Gilfry seems PRETTY taken aback by it and seems like he steps aside in order to not lose his shit. But maybe it was just a harder slap than he expected like you said. Either way I’ve never seen that aria so geniusly staged, it’s like comic but TENSE! Love the constant movement (contrasted with “Like a rock”)
this was the first opera my mother ever took me to when I was a young girl, and still remains my favorite. It's funny, light, and has some beautiful music to go with it. The perfect one to have a Big Brain Relaxation Sesh to.

E nel tuo nel mio bichiero is always such a moving quartet/trio for me. I love it. She has finally found peace within in a love that wont abandon her and that is ready to be with her in peace and harmony. It truly is for me the best trio of this opera. Its also why i believe that in real life she would not have stayed with her previous lover, such betrayal after such a moving scene. Mozart and daponte best collaboration in my humble opinion
It is a most beautiful performance with lot of amazing voices. Even, it is so bad the ads are dsitrupting thsi ethernal harmony. The final purpose of the evolution was Mozart himself. And the expandation of the heavenly harmony.

This inspired me to order a copy of Lorenzo Da Ponte's memoirs. Years ago I had read several volumes of Giacomo Casanova's autobiography, and I believe knowing the character - by way of word-choice and tone, etc. - of someone who lived a bit later, through the turn of the century - through the French Revolution and IN young America - should deepen and round-out knowledge of learned enlightenment-era, and the transition into the so called Age of Reason, disposition and spirit. Also heard there was some interesting literature in 1790's Vienna.
William Alston If Casanova hadn’t suddenly stopped writing his memoirs (I think it only goes up to the 1770s) Mozart and Da Ponte probably would have made an appearance in them... too bad
Deluxe Clavier I always think about that tantalizing prospect. Does DaPonte even write about Mozart that much? I’ve seen some excerpts but get the impression there’s not much more than that. Ugh why was everyone so coy. Michael Kelly’s account of knowing Mozart is probably the most satisfying.
I'm very happy this was my first exposure to Cosi. Other versions on RUclips are overacted, to the point that the beauty of music is totally lost to percussive diction and lack of harmonic blending. This version is perfection in direction, conducting, acting, singing, and the audience clearly LOVES it as they should.
Superb on all accounts. Thank you... another favorite! The singing is magnificent, the conducting perfect, and the staging beautifully atmospheric, yet not distracting. Wish I'd seen this, but this posting is pleasure enough.
I loved watching this so much. I have since listened to the Böhm and Rene Jacobs recordings. Schwarzkopf is so great in the Böhm recording, but Jacobs wins me over with his thrilling, Baroque touch to the score, much like in this video. Thank you for posting!

I agree. No deeper comment has been ever made on the subject of infidelity. Beethoven has said that he would not ever write an Opera on such an undignified subject, yet how wrong he was!!! For Mozart’s magnificent masterpiece on this “undignified “ subject is a beautiful statement on the way REAL human beings are. Mozart’s characters are always profoundly HUMAN, neither superheroes nor supervillains as in Beethoven’s Fidelio, but just deeply human, with qualities and defects like all human beings have.
Bravo per tutti. The voices are wonderful. I would like to have seen this production a little more enhanced with touches of the period. But musically fine.
This opera works much better in the era it was composed--sorry all you modernist stage directors. This was wonderful! I was especially taken by Trost's " Una Aura Amorosa"

I must confess I am impressed with James's range of voice. Have never heard such low-voiced notary in CFT. No wonder the girls were mislead :). And musically, it is quite beautiful. But visually I prefer Glyndenbourne's 2009 staging with Persson and Vondung - I mean the decoration and costumes. Also, I am quite curious... It is another staging missing Ferrando's aria "Ah lo veggio". Does anybody know why is it missed so often? Why do they pass from "Ma tu mi guardi e poi sospiri" directly to Ferrando's leave? Like that it is a bit illogical and this lack of logic is dealt with worse or better in different stagings.
" Glyndenbourne's 2009" Maybe you thought 2006, conducting by Ivan FISHER with Luca Pisaroni as Guglielmo and topi Lehtipuu as Ferrando. In my opinion, the most beautiful production I've never seen.
"Ah lo veggio" is usually cut because it's apparently very difficult to sing. Search for it directly in RUclips and you will find a few versions so you can judge for yourself.
There is one DVD in which it is included and indeed contains more music than any other Cose: the performance from Zurich with Malin Hartelius and Jose Camarena

Rainer Trost is absolutely stunning, especially in Aura Amorosa. Rodney Gilfry, the best Count Almaviva and Don Giovanni ever, also does an excellent performance as Guglielmo. In my opinion Gardiner is the best composer I know because of his Mozart works: this one, Figaro 1993, and Don Giovanni 1994. They all have Rodney Gilfry performing, and really good selection of singers. In this Cosi fan tutte, Fiordilidgi and Dorabella are not that good, Despina and Alfonso are pretty good.
I have to respectfully disagree. Both Amanda Roocroft and the mezzo (for the life of me I have forgotten her name at this very moment) we’re brilliant in this production! Especially so considering that they were about 22 and 24 years old respectively. To have that much control of their young voices,in such a huge production, is freaking spectacular!

I think it all planned but the singers such good actors too and so committed it looked improvised

Years ago I had read several volumes of Giacomo Casanova's autobiography, and I believe knowing the character - by way of word-choice and tone, etc. - of someone who lived a bit later, through the turn of the century - through the French Revolution and IN young America - should deepen and round-out knowledge of learned enlightenment-era, and the transition into the so called Age of Reason, disposition and spirit. Also heard there was some interesting literature in 1790's Vienna.
William Alston If Casanova hadn’t suddenly stopped writing his memoirs (I think it only goes up to the 1770s) Mozart and Da Ponte probably would have made an appearance in them... too bad
Deluxe Clavier I always think about that tantalizing prospect. Does DaPonte even write about Mozart that much? I’ve seen some excerpts but get the impression there’s not much more than that. Ugh why was everyone so coy. Michael Kelly’s account of knowing Mozart is probably the most satisfying.
I'm very happy this was my first exposure to Cosi. Other versions on RUclips are overacted, to the point that the beauty of music is totally lost to percussive diction and lack of harmonic blending. This version is perfection in direction, conducting, acting, singing, and the audience clearly LOVES it as they should.

I loved watching this so much. I have since listened to the Böhm and Rene Jacobs recordings. Schwarzkopf is so great in the Böhm recording, but Jacobs wins me over with his thrilling, Baroque touch to the score, much like in this video. Thank you for posting!

I agree. No deeper comment has been ever made on the subject of infidelity. Beethoven has said that he would not ever write an Opera on such an undignified subject, yet how wrong he was!!! For Mozart’s magnificent masterpiece on this “undignified “ subject is a beautiful statement on the way REAL human beings are. Mozart’s characters are always profoundly HUMAN, neither superheroes nor supervillains as in Beethoven’s Fidelio, but just deeply human, with qualities and defects like all human beings have.

This opera works much better in the era it was composed--sorry all you modernist stage directors. This was wonderful! I was especially taken by Trost's " Una Aura Amorosa"

I must confess I am impressed with James's range of voice. Have never heard such low-voiced notary in CFT. No wonder the girls were mislead :). And musically, it is quite beautiful. But visually I prefer Glyndenbourne's 2009 staging with Persson and Vondung - I mean the decoration and costumes. Also, I am quite curious... It is another staging missing Ferrando's aria "Ah lo veggio". Does anybody know why is it missed so often? Why do they pass from "Ma tu mi guardi e poi sospiri" directly to Ferrando's leave? Like that it is a bit illogical and this lack of logic is dealt with worse or better in different stagings.
" Glyndenbourne's 2009" Maybe you thought 2006, conducting by Ivan FISHER with Luca Pisaroni as Guglielmo and topi Lehtipuu as Ferrando. In my opinion, the most beautiful production I've never seen.

"Ah lo veggio" is usually cut because it's apparently very difficult to sing. Search for it directly in RUclips and you will find a few versions so you can judge for yourself.

Rainer Trost is absolutely stunning, especially in Aura Amorosa. Rodney Gilfry, the best Count Almaviva and Don Giovanni ever, also does an excellent performance as Guglielmo. In my opinion Gardiner is the best composer I know because of his Mozart works: this one, Figaro 1993, and Don Giovanni 1994. They all have Rodney Gilfry performing, and really good selection of singers. In this Cosi fan tutte, Fiordilidgi and Dorabella are not that good, Despina and Alfonso are pretty good.
Gardiner is the conductor, not the composer.
I have to respectfully disagree. Both Amanda Roocroft and the mezzo (for the life of me I have forgotten her name at this very moment) we’re brilliant in this production! Especially so considering that they were about 22 and 24 years old respectively. To have that much control of their young voices,in such a huge production, is freaking spectacular!
