    I'm a Senior woman and don't understand a lot of this stuff. While I do understand HOW to connect in parallel and in series, I don't understand WHEN we should connect in each, or WHY? I wonder if you'd be willing to explain the difference in hooking up solar and when we should choose one connection over the other? Thanks!

    • @carlyellison8498
      @carlyellison8498 4 года назад +3

      This panel is 18V/ 5.55A. When you connect in series, the voltages add up. So two of these panels would output 36 volts but the amps would remain 5.55. If you connect in parallel, the amps add up. So two of these in parallel would be 18V/11.1A. Which to choose? Higher voltage (series) is easier to transmit with smaller gauge wire. Higher amps (parallel) requires thicker (and more expensive) wire. But if you shade a series-connected panel, the whole string of panels stops producing power. With parallel, shading of one panel only affects that panel, not any of the others. Also, keep in mind the solar charge controller that you will be plugging into. They have limits on volts and amps coming from the panels.

    • @carlyellison8498
      @carlyellison8498 4 года назад +3

      I have 4 big panels in two pairs. Each pair is connected in series, and the two pairs are connected in parallel. This helps with shading, and also works with my solar charge controller. If I connected them all in series, the volts would be too high. And the amps would be too high if I connected them all in parallel.

      I'll add this topic to my list of "to-do" videos. Basically the rule is you want to run the highest voltage you can for your controller. In the case of power stations, you usually want to get as close to their max input voltage as you can. Most 12v panels output around 20v (some more, some less but this is a general rule). Panels in series add VOLTS, and panels in parallel add AMPS. So if you have a Jackery with a 30v limit you can't use two in series because the volts would be too high (20v+20v) so you use parallel. For the Bluetti the new one can take 68v which means you can run up to 3 panels in series. Almost all of these have a 10 amp input limit and most panels (generally) output about 5 amps. On the Jackery that means two panels in parallel, on the Bluetti it's also two in parallel -- but because it can also take 3 in series that means you can do a "series-parallel" of 6 panels!

  • @LordTimelord
    @LordTimelord 4 года назад

    I just got my two Beaudens panels in the mail today. I tested them both by connecting them to my Bluetti. One panel got 84 watts, and the other got 89 watts. Not bad for central Indiana!

    Purchased the Beaudens 100 W solar power station when you reviewed it last Fall. I'm very tech challenged and did not purchase the Beaudens solar panel but instead got a Jackery panel. OMG what a pain in the ass. Jackery does not send all those adapters with their panels like Beaudens does and their charging cord did not have the correct plug to plug into the Beauden. After much running around, cussing and fuming I finally sent the Jackery back to Amazon and ordered the Beaudens solar panel. I have been out in the desert since November and this Beaudens set up has worked like a champ for me. Just make sure if you are a dumb old lady that doesn't know jacks**t about solar to get the Beaudens panel and Beaudens solar power station. Thanks Hobotech for this review of the solar panel. I was wondering if they would charge the bigger power stations.
    Question; have a Panasonic toothbrush that says 100-240V ac, 50/60Hz, 0.4-1.4W. Using the Beaudens AC to charge this unit. Well it stays charging for about 3 or 4 minutes then the unit goes off. Can you tell me what is going on? I can plug my full size all in one computer, and it keeps it powered just fine.

    • @HOBOTECH
      @HOBOTECH  4 года назад +1

      The toothbrush is probably too low of a load for the AC output and it thinks nothing is connected and powers off. You may have to plug in a power strip and charge something else at the same time to keep it going.

      Jackery 1000 you would use the Anderson on both panels to connect one leg in series (+ to - ) and the remaining Anderson + and - would go direct into the 1000 -- nothing else needed. For other Jackerys you need either MC4 or Anderson to 8mm since they only have an 8mm input.

    Hi ! What’s the biggest watt solar panel I can use to charge the 20-volt Go Power Plus (without having to purchase a regulator [?] to protect the power station from getting ruined from too much solar input? Thank You! (I already have the Thunderbolt 15w panel…) Also, I want one like this, in that the solar panel attaches the the power station with a plug in jack; instead of little shocky battery cables! I’m looking for something “waterproof”, that can live outside - including in deep winter cold. Thank You!

    Hey, great review. So good in fact that once they were back in stock I got one. Unfortunately they were no longer honoring the promo code. So far the best charge rate I've gotten has been 85w on a very sunny day here in middle TN a few days ago. I'd like to get a longer charge cable to hook this up to my SUAOKI G500. Can you recommend something? Preferably at least 5 feet long.

    Looks like this was already discontinued by them on Amazon. Which one do you reccomend now for charging the Bluetti AC200? Looks like there's several 120W folding panels for this price range now.

      HOBOTECH good morning, please elaborate, I wish to use the solar panel to power inverter to charge a deep cycle battery and for 12v daytime items ie cooler box, then use the battery to power the inverter and 12v items for evening use, cooler box, projector, lights etc, and repeat. Here in West Dorset England we haven’t seen the Sun for 3 months but we’re looking at clear sunny weather for the next two weeks, i do have a back up generator and a biolite, but I’m looking at a beginners off grid power source for basic charge items. Many thanks, ps I’ve looked at your other vids, good stuff!

      You can use this panel to charge a battery with a 12v to AC inverter and battery charger or more simply with a solar controller.

    Can you review the top solar (tp) panel vs like a Rockpal panel. I really like the durable look of the top panel, but want to get a quality portable panel.

    Good Stuff Sir. Why did you opt to go series and not just parallel ? Wouldn't both provide the same wattage to charge ?

    • @HOBOTECH
      @HOBOTECH  4 года назад

      See "tegma" comment below. I explain the difference. Generally, you always want to use the highest voltage you can for the input.

    • @LordTimelord
      @LordTimelord 4 года назад

      Same principle as high voltage power lines. Running higher voltage reduces the power lost over a wires distance.
      If the cable run is short, the difference is smaller. However if you're running long cables from the panel to the device, running series will help reduce the power loss compared to a parallel connection.
      You can also exceed the total amperage of some devices by running parallel vs. series.
      Always RTFM (read the f-ing manual) of all of your equipment to ensure you don't accidently fry something! 😉

    Could this or any other solar panel (preferably 100 W) be used inside a SUV on the dash or against the windshield?

    Is is possible to connect two pairs of these panel, each pair in series and then the two pairs in parallel for 400W total and would you recommend doing this with the Bluetti 150 (1500)

    • @HOBOTECH
      @HOBOTECH  4 года назад

      You can run at max 2 in series. I tried 3 and it burned the panel. So 2+2 would work for 400w.

    This is my first time actually looking at portable seller but I have a question.
    Instead of running them in series. Why is there not a splitter at the point at which it reaches whatever device whether or not it be a two prong 3-prong to 4 prong whatever? Seems to me it would be more feasible to do that rather than together so more power would have to go through each.
