While Cécile Chaminade’s father discouraged her study of composition, her early efforts impressed no less than George Bizet. Fortunately for us, she went on to complete her education in both composition and piano performance. She enjoyed success in France, England and the United States as both pianist and composer and became the first woman composer to be awarded Légion d'Honneur.
