Yes, I hate it when people put music on the videos. Another thing too is when people put words instead of voice; I did that on this video, apologizing for the poor auto-focus, but now if I need to inject more info, or make a correction, I do it with voice. It's hard to watch a video when you are trying to read text. Though text is useful for comparing stats at a glance, or helping the user get the correct spelling, or pointing to a spot.

My many thanks to you sir. Had to swap switch in my 84 year old mother's 03 trail blazer. Watched a few RUclips videos, and yours was the one. 15 minutes total time. Piece of cake!!! Thanks again

Glad it helped you. I usually like doing things the simpler way, but then some times I like to do things the hard way. :-) The manufactures like making it harder for us. That clip is easy to forget. I'm glad that my mistake helped you to not forget. Often in life we can learn more from peoples mistakes than we can from people success. This ignition switch is so much easier to replace than the ones they put in the older cars, and less expensive too. So it's one thing that the manufactures have improved.

Hi Wayne, I just replaced my ignition switch on my 2005 Trailblazer with the help of your video. I put in a AC Delco from Rockauto.com, It was less than $30.00. My problem was the ignition was frozen. After a mechanic but in a new switch some time ago, it still didn't work right. With the key out and in the off position the slightest tap on the ignition area would turn on the battery indicator light and gear selector light. I complained and they told me it had something to do with the steering column. They charged me $368.00.
Now with the new switch everything things is back to normal. Thanks again, I couldn't have done it without you. Jake

Thank you for your post. It's great how in this day and age, we are able to watch other people do a repair, often showing an easier way to do something than what the manufacture suggests. And being able to watch several people do the same repair, getting different tips from different videos. I prefer to do all possible repairs myself for the very reason you described. We all make mistakes, but so many auto shops are used to being able to tell the customers anything, and the customer knows no different. And then if I make a mistake, I know it, and learn from it. The other thing is that auto problems can some times be so intermittent that the problem is better troubleshooted ourselfs, as we are the one driving it.

Thanks. Glad it was a help. These ignition switches are so much easier and quicker and less expensive than they were with the older vehicles. Years ago I had older vehicle that had an ignition switch where the plastic housing of the switch was cracking, So instead of going through the great trouble and expense of replacing it, I just wrapped it in fiberglass epoxy. And that held up for the life of the vehicle.

Not disconnecting the battery makes it more fun. :-) Then if someone connects it aligned way off, the starter could crank constantly until the electrical plug is disconnected. So for anyone else that prefers not to disconnect the battery, be ready to quickly disconnect the plug. :-)
What is also fun, is when I don't turn off the power, when replacing ballasts in florescent lighting fixtures next to the window during a lightning storm. :-) Turning off the power just takes all the fun out of it. :-)

No, my problem was an intermittent hard transmission shift. Turning the key off and back on again would fix it for a while. The switch was sometimes failing to connect the transmission to the communication so that the transmission would know how fast the engine was running.
What symptoms you get will depend on what part of the switch is failing, as it is several switches in one.

About to do the job on a 2002, just like in the video. I transcribed the steps you describe for myself. Putting them here in case anyone else likes printing off a list of steps:
    0) Disconnect battery
    1) Tilt steering wheel all the way up
    2) Pull the tilt lever straight out (may have to pull hard)
    3) Pull down the trim on the key side of the column, then on the other side
    a) once it's loose, there are little tabs in the dash that must be released
    b) there may be two screws holding it up, check those first
    c) push the trim down towards engine, then it should come all the way out
    4) There are two tabs on the ignition switch that hold it into place
    a) unclip the wire that is attached to the ignition switch before pulling it down
    b) use a screwdriver to release the two tabs and let ignition switch come down
    c) release the ignition connector from the ignition switch with a screwdriver
    5) Align the new switch's innards to be in the same position as the old switch's innards
    6) Barely set the electrical connection where it goes, then align the switch where it belongs before tightening the connection.
    7) Reconnect the battery, make sure the truck works correctly. Especially ensure that the truck is off when the key is "off".
Reverse steps 3->2->1 to finish the job.

I took it to the dealer twice and after $220.00 they said nothing was wrong, but said they'd replace the switch for another &210.00. This took me 25 minutes and $27.00 for the part. I assume that you are talking about the large panel under the steering. Yes, it would make it a little easier, but then that is more to take off and put back on. And so it is quicker to leave it on.

On the new ignition switch, move the gear back and forth to familiarize yourself with what it looks like, and then move it into the same position as the other. If it helps, you can put 2 marks with a marker on the old ignition switch gear, to mark the left and the right side, so that you can move the gear to look at where it is, without forgetting it's original position.
Taking a picture of it after marking it, can help too, to remember it's original position.

nice watch. casio dbc-xxx? i am learning my way around cars, i even have done an engine swap just using youtube and my tears before but i dont know most of the basics. my question is this: would a broken ignition switch cause the interlock solenoid to not actuate? i cant press the thumb lock on the shifter in to move it out of park. i tore the console out and removed the interlock solenoid so i can get around. anyways i thought for sure the interlock solenoid was bad, but i swapped a known good one in and it too doesnt actuate. seems like things should make clicking noises when you press on the brake i have nothing. random bit of side info: for a couple of years i would occasionally get chimes like a door is open or something when no door is open, thinking maybe ignitions switch problems?. i bought this used and it has an after market stereo maybe that weird little box that satisfies the alarm system and stereo nonsense is bad? also, this issue with the interlock solennoid used to blow a fuse under the hood called "backup", i would replace the fuse then i could drive it for 6 more months until it blows the fuse. as i said its not blowing the fuse any more its just not telling the interlock solenoid to do its job. while i do have a second trailblazer i borrow parts from in these occasions, i am going to try brake liight switch then this ignition switch. i know i can bypass this permanently but i am an idiot, that safety mechanism is for me

I actually installed a wire that goes into my car that allows me to to the test from inside if I want to. Close all doors, and set the security with the key fob. See how many amps it's drawing, and see how long it takes for the amps to go down after a few minutes. For example on my car when I did a test:
      Normal amp draw test:
      1.624 amps at first
      .012 am after 10 sec
      1.65 am after secure lock
      .012 am after 10 sec.
      4.5 after unlock
      2.98 after couple seconds
      .080 "
      .012 "
      1.66 after door open.
.055 few secs with door open.
      .022 "
      1.651 door closed
      .080
      .012
      .004 after removing usb charger
When you find a problem, then the next step is to test the voltage across the fuses until you find a fuse that give a high voltage reading indicating high amps.

I've cleaned the throttle body, replaced cam shaft sensor, put in a used fuse box under the hood ( as new ones are no longer available) , tomorrow I'm changing the ignition switch. I hear the crank shaft sensor can sometimes be a problem too. ..any other suggestions besides the one I don't want to hear? PCM ? or scrap the darn thing? Thanks.

I don't think it's the ignition switch. I have 2 separate similar issues. The car never stalls, but acts like it's trying to. Same thing with the no codes. Though a $1,000 scan tool might find the problem. :
      1) The motor does a quick skip at random, at idle, and quickly recovers. It only happens at idle.
      2) The voltage drops at idle and slowly goes back up. It only happens at idle.
I suspect the throttle position sensor, but I am not going to buy a whole new throttle body just to replace a stupid sensor that might be bad. Chevy ripped us off by making the throttle body sensor not replaceable. It's also a sliding wire type instead of the more dependable Hall Effect type.
It's been like that since I purchased the car years ago, and has only gotten slightly worse. But it's an annoying reminder that it will eventually get worse.

If the switch is working properly, but the lock just does not turn all the way, then one temporary option would be to disconnect the ignition switch each time you are going to be parked for a while. I don't have any experience with dealing with the lock.

Having to turn the key harder could be the ignition switch. Easy way to tell would be to remove the ignition switch, and then try turning the key. The ignition switch does normally give you your spring back pressure.
But if it turns rough like it's hanging then it's probably the lock, especially if you feel roughness even with the ignition switch out, then it's the lock.
So take the ignition switch out, and see what happens.

The main 12 volt pin has power and the ground has a ground,, Running jumper from main twelve volt diagonally to the other pin kicks in fuel pump. How ever the pin coming from the PCM which should have power when I turn key on does not get power.. I think what ever is causing it is stopping me from getting spark too because with the pressure built up from jumping fuel pump it still won't fire.

    • @WayneSallee-comTech

Move them with your finger to match the gears on the one you removed from the car. Basically they are almost all the way to the end. It might even work, if you just moved them all the way to the end, and installed it, but I'd advise setting it to match the one taken out. This is all assuming that your key is in the off position. Yes I prefer to do everything on my car myself so that I know that it was done right. And if I do make a mistake, I know what happened. Often mechanics are in such a hurry to do the job, that they don't do it right, or they mess something else up in the process. And intermediate problems are definitely easier to troubleshoot when it's your car.

Wayne?...I appreciate your help here, ive read some problems of others & you sound like you know what youre doing, so thank you!...I enjoyed watching you explain a few things...My original problem on my 2002 trailblazer (156,000 miles) was my stereo wouldnt turn off, I didnt realize when I got out of the car that it was still playing, so it drained my battery...then my security light would come on randomly, then if you hit the lock button (random) to lock the doors it would pop back up & unlock...does that sound to you like an ignition switch?...im desperate!..Thank you, I appreciate your time!

    • @WayneSallee-comTech
      @WayneSallee-comTech  5 лет назад

No that's definitely not an ignition switch problem. The only way that all those problems could be related would be the computer, or one of the computer modules, but even that I doubt. They are probably all separate problems. The lock problem could be water getting into the switch. GM has had some problems with water getting into some of the door switches. As for the security lights, I assume you are talking about the lights that turn on when you open the door. You probably have a failing switch ( a different switch I assume you know where those switches are at).

There is also another switch for the key that is not the ignition switch. It let's the computer know that the key is in the ignition to keep you from locking your keys in ignition. That will cause your lock to lock, then unlock. That switch could be going bad.

And if that switch is causing your door to lock, then unlock, then you will also notice that when you take your key out of the ignition, and open the door, you will hear the chime warning you that your key is in the ignition even though it is not in the ignition. If you get that false chime, then you know where that problem is.

It could be. Have you noticed this to have slowly gotten worse over a period of time? Have you noticed that things would not work right, but if you turned the key off and did it again, things worked? If so, it's probably the ignition switch. Some times the gauge cluster goes bad, and causes that kind of behavior. But more often it's the ignition switch. If it turns out to not be the ignition switch, then it is probably your gauge cluster.

For the 2002 Trailblazer, the chime goes through the driver side speaker only, so those 2 problems are probably the same. The other 2 problems are separate. So it's probably 3 separate problems. And I don't think it's an ignition switch problem.

Sounds like your starter is going out. You will probably be stuck soon with no ability to start. Put a volt meter on the battery with it set to record lowest volts, and try to start the car. If you don't have that setting have someone watch for lowest volts. It also could be a bad connection at the battery. Disconnect your battery cables, and clean them with baking soda, and put them back on. Also check all cables going to the starter, and make sure the starter bolts are not loose, as that is where the starter gets it's ground.

It's a database watch with phone numbers, calendar, calculator, world time, stop watch, timer, alarm. Without pushing any buttons it shows a 2 week calendar, day of the week, year, month date, hour, minute, second. The only thing I use now, is the time, and calculator. More often I use my phone for calculator, some times I use my watch for calculator. I like the fact that I can see all that info at a quick glance. Most watches don't have all that info without pushing any buttons. It's nice to be able to remind yourself what day of the week it is, at a quick glance.

You might need a hex screw driver bit. But most vehicles don't have that screw in them.
You will need a small flat head screw driver, and a tiny flat head screw driver.

Great video! I have a 2004 Trailblazer and wondering if mine could be the ignition switch. The gauges on the dash were going crazy a few days ago, then when we shut the vehicle off it wouldn't crank when we went to start it back up. I tried to jump it, thinking it was the battery but didn't work. Then, after about 20 minutes I tried to start it again and it worked without jumping. Sometimes the dash lights up and all lights are on, then other times nothing but the check engine light comes on. Either way, if I am patient enough it eventually cranks and works fine. Any suggestions? I would love for this to be a $30 fix :)
*update: I installed the new ignition switch and it started right up. Everything was working so I put the panel back on then it did the same thing to me. When I turn the key all power is on, gauges and all lights are on but won’t crank. No clicking noise or anything, just doesn’t start.
*2nd update: I seem to have okay luck when doing the following. When I put the key in, I turn it 1 click until the battery light is on, then a second click and the whole dash lights up, all gauges, check engine, securty, ABS, seat belt.. I wait for them to turn off (about 5 seconds) so that only the gauges are lit up then I turn it crank the engine and it usually starts right up. If I just insert key and attempt to start the vehicle up right away it usually will not crank and gets stuck that way for about 5 minutes. I am so lost and have no idea what it could be since I just replaced the ignition switch.

I would never recommend anyone purchase a trailblazer. They have so many electrical problems. There have been problems with the body control module causing similar problems. It's under the back seat with the fuses.
I have a similar issue as yours, but with different symptoms.
I changes my ignition switch about a year ago because some times when I started the car, the transmission would shift hard. A bad ignition switch can cause this. That seemed to fix it for about 1 year, but just recently it has returned.
My symptoms are similar to yours, in that:
changing the ignition switch seemed to fix it.
taking the key out and restarting seemed to fix it, if not the first time, eventually it would work. Once it works, it works, until the car is turned off again.
One thing that I have considered, is if turning he key slower would make a difference, as you have mentioned.
Another thing that seems to make a difference, and is documented on the internet, is that things are more likely to work, if the AC blower is off when starting the car, especially not having the blower on high.
Another thing that I think might make a difference, is that I took the ignition switch out again a few days ago, and instead of lining it up the way that the old ignition switch was, I moved gears to the position to where it looks like in the not so good picture in the shop manual. I set it with the first point on the gear, barely sticking above the switch.
I also tried setting the ignition switch all the way to the end to see what would hapen, and it would not crank.

Well I tried the "turn the key, give it time, then crank" method, and for me it has proven not to help.
Now I'm trying the "turn the key fast" method with the fan off (very important), and so far it seems that it is preventing the body control module from overheating, but sometimes if refuses to start as if there is no fuel getting to the system, but "turn the key off, and turn the key quickly again" works. So far so good on that trick.
This reminds me of the days when I was using a TRS80 color computer 2. Someone would give me a file on a cassette tape, and I wold have to adjust the pitch one direction on the cassette player, and then later as it was still loading the file, adjust the pitch the other way to finish loading the file.

If it won't physically turn, then it's probably a different problem unless temporarily removing the switch make s difference.

If the key physically won't go back, then it's the lock that needs to be replaced. You could try lubing the lock, and see if that helps.
