@Lyk Dat And just because he wasn’t solely at fault doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be criticised for also being at fault. People are right to criticise him. People are dead. And it’s not the first time that he’s encouraged this kind of behaviour at his concerts.
@Lyk Dat I mean there’s proof of plenty of other artists stopping their shows to help out. It’s not 100% on Travis but encouraging that type of behavior is exactly why he’s in this mess
When I went to Camp Flognaw in 2018 and went to A$AP Rocky’s set, my friend and I were near the middle-back (to avoid the pit) and during the beginning of the show, A$AP was definitely prompting the crowd to just go insane, and the crowd even from the back started pushing forward with a force I have never felt. My friend and I ended up getting pushed down along with a few others and we were trampled for at least 15 seconds. I did think I would die or at least pass out. We were screaming so loud, I lost my voice completely. Some giant man in the crowd (a random stranger I will always be thankful for) ended up picking us up after picking up the people on top of us in a hurry. We were bloodied up, our shoes came off, my bag completely broke, the straps were destroyed. It was terrifying. We left immediately, but as we left the crowd (which took at least 10min to push through), it only got crazier. That set was also very cryptic and the beginning was unsettling as well. I wasn’t at Astroworld, but from what people were saying about the “vibes” beforehand, it just reminds me so much of that night. It’s so terrifying, and I certainly have had no desire to go back to a festival since then. Thankfully, I don’t think there were any casualties during that set or Camp Flognaw, but it could’ve happened if that one man did not take the time to help us.
@@christopherminutolo9384 It was an opportunity I am grateful to have had, but there were several dangerous parts of the festival both days that I went, so I am thankful to have made it out safely. I will probably never go to a music festival again.
The A$AP show I was at was also one of the craziest crowds/pits I’ve ever been a part of, and I’ve gone to plenty metal and rock shows. I know exactly what you mean when you describe the pushing force unlike anything you’ve felt before.
I went to a Kehlani concert a few years ago, during the show some people tried to start getting rowdy and pushing people in the crowd. She immediately stopped singing and told the crowd to calm the hell down or she would stop performing. Best believe the crowd stop with their nonsense 😫 Not saying he's completely responsible, but it just shows that he definitely had the position of power to make the crowd aware of what they were doing so that they could calm down while proper help arrived to help those in need.
I think that Travis fostered that environment. I’ve seen SlipKnot twice, and both times I’ve gone into the pit. I’ve been knocked down so many times, but the difference is when someone gets knocked down at a Knot show three people are reaching down to pick you up. At one point the crowd got wild and I couldn’t get out, 4 ppl surrounded me and kept me from getting hurt. It’s just what metal fans do at shows. It’s so sad to hear the accounts from the kids at Astroworld.
Travis has a literal record because he doesnt just lack crowd control, he actively encourages shit, dangerous as hell behaviour. I work gigs, and that shit can get scary if youve got people busting barriers onto stage, theres a lot of dangerous crap. Lots of power running everywhere.
not to dispute you or imply that this kind of camaraderie exists at a travis scott show, but the problem was crowd crush. so there wasn’t enough space to breathe let alone help people up, even if they wanted to.
about the astro world thing, i’m a born and raised houstonian and travis scott is knows for insighting violence at his parties and concerts. also the venue is known to be p shitty with security so it’s def on them as well. my sisters childhood friend died at that festival so it hurts us and her family so much when people talk about the festival being “satanic”. it’s serious and real people were hurt and killed.
Exactly, there's multiple angles of him actively looking at the carnage going on and doing nothing about it. It was hard to listen to Noel back him like this..
There are so many clips of so many instances of total negligence and Travis seeing what was happening but doing nothing. I can't believe people are still trying to act like he isn't among the most responsible.
fr they were handling travis scott with kid gloves. its not like its some herculean effort to stop the show, all he had to do was stop singing and get off the stage and let the EMTs do their job
Dude istg. Travis massively at fault for sure. But in all fairness idk if that footage was release at the time the podcast was recorded. Giving noel the benefit of the doubt here but def you are right. Blood on Travis' hands
Personally I think when you are performing on stage like that and have command of the entire audiences attention, you have a responsibility that comes with that power and attention. Just literally in the sense that eyes and ears are on you. that’s only one layer of it and responsibility falls on shoulders other than Travis’s for sure but so many artists have shown how to use that responsibility in similar situations
Wasn’t a fan of Cody and Noels take they defended Travis letting hundreds of people getting injured and multiple people dying because Travis felt “Pressured” to keep the show going🤦♂️🤯 Travis has stopped shows before to beat the shit of of a minor that stole his shoe🤦♂️ The man’s clearly didn’t give af till it blew up and his PR Team made him apologize in a black a white filter trying for minutes to get one tear out😂
Unfortunately, TS’s responsibility only amounts to basic morals and respect for his fans. He will likely never be actually held legally responsible for this, assuming he’s gonna be sued. He/his lawyers will settle any and all cases against him. He is trying to offset the incoming lawsuits preemptively with offering to pay for funeral expenses, etc. for good optics. Whether or not that will work remains to be seen.
I know noel is coming from a good place but he def doesnt understand the astroworld situation, travis has blood on his hands just as the people in live nation does, he knew it was a dangerous enviroment before the show and he ignored it, he knew about the mass casualty warning and still finished his whole set, he acknowledged the fans begging to stop the show and he didnt care, he is at fault too and is not the first time he lets someone get injured at his shows, sorry to break it to yall but he doesnt care.

I watched this before I knew more details, and Noel's take seemed reasonable and level-headed from the perspective of someone who doesn't know how abhorrently Travis acted. You assume there must be a number of factors at play, rather than one person being a psychopath... Travis' behavior is genuinely shocking. Hope Noel addresses it next ep too
you guys should look into Steven donziger. He's a lawyer who won a 9.5 billion lawsuit against chevron. Chevron refused to pay it & then spent millions & years going after him. He is currently in prison for a misdemeanor by a corrupt judge who wouldn't even give him a jury of his peers & is from an organization funded by Chevron. It is one of the most disgusting cases I've ever seen. & proves (to me) that our country is an oligarchy.
@@RealElongatedMuskrat The details of this lawyers case is insane. The judge (who is from the federalist society-chevron donates to them) put him under house arrest BEFORE the trial for 787 days, denied him a jury of his peers, barred access to the trial for the public. The district attorney first refused to take the case so a lawyer that worked for chevron was appointed to prosecution. I've never seen so many conflicts of interests in my life.
I whole heartedly believe the incident at the Travis concert has a lot to do with the culture and atmosphere created by him (aside from the complex issues of event planning, which was absolutely a contributing factor). But I've been to Warped Tour for years and plenty of punk shows where crowds get rowdy, push, and are told to get wild and mosh, but the artists ALWAYS stress the safety of the audience. Not to mention, everyone in that scene knows to look out for those around you. It's about having fun while being respectful. It's totally possible to have a rowdy excited crowd, potentially too may people, and have a safe show, and to me to comes down to the culture and atmosphere. If ONE person goes down at a rock show, everyone around stops to help or give them space. Just imagine if there were people with that mindset at the Travis show.
That's the difference between the metal scene and rap scene. For metalheads pit etiquette has been fully established, but rap is just starting to get wilder and wilder
If he actually talked to his audience to check for people around them and stop them from moving many people could have lived. There was a lot of people that felt trapped and he could have stopped everything
If you look at an aerial view of the barricade setup it created small sections with barriers on 3 sides so there was no exit once you were in. It gave me major Hillsborough stadium vibes. It also came out that there was no contingency plan for a crowd surge in their 50,000 page event plan despite 3 people being injured during a surge at the last Astroworld. Like most disasters, there is going to be a series of failures all the way down that all came together to create the perfect storm. But I foresee Live Nation being the biggest offenders because those barricades were death traps.
I didn't realize that there was no crowd sectioning at Astroworld until I listened to this. That's absolutely unthinkable to me. I regularly attend festivals here in Europe where you'll have 70, 80k crowds per stage / performer but I've never heard of anyone being killed in a crushing incident like this and I'm wondering now if that's because the crowd is always split into segments. There's barricaded rows of security right across the width of the crowd at periodic intervals etc. I just can't imagine being in a crowd that big and it just being one huge open space without crowd control or multiple points for people to get pulled out if they need to.
There was a break down the middle, however the real issue was barricading at the back of the crowd… that isn’t a humane way to hold a crowd, at all, especially 50k+. they were practically herded in like cattle with no way out, only a few were able to make it to the middle barricades to be lifted up out by security, but only very few. Everyone else was too trapped to move anywhere. Horrible
That's absolutely part of it. And it's more than just having an exit. Studies have shown that once people are packed together in a certain density, where individuals can no longer effectively use their muscles to resist motion, the mass material of bodies starts to act like a fluid. Small waves of motion will be amplified as they pass through the crowd - so a small amount of force at the back will be crushing at the front. So the gaps between segments are effectively "wave breakers"
Giving Travis the benefit of the doubt, maybe he didn’t realise the scope of the festival or what would happen if people stormed barriers. However, there isn’t a chance in the world he didn’t see the ambulances and people screaming for help, jumping on stage and climbing up things to get his attention. Nirvana concerts used to get stopped if Kurt saw someone getting groped. It may be an honorary title idk but I’m sure he was some sort of co-creator of the event. Maybe that means nothing! I don’t know! But he wasn’t powerless and he chose to continue for 40 minutes after people were being crushed and didn’t stop his show till people got help or let ambulances through. He was encouraging of it. I think he’s just as responsible as staff and event who were ignoring fans pain, injury and cries for help, however, morally, I think he is the worst. That’s his fans and he was like why you stopping this is what you came for. Like wtf man. No. That’s not it. Then to come out like oh if I had seen anything, I would have done something and my fans mean the world to me 🤭 like no they obviously don’t. Their safety wasn’t a priority, having a chaotic event that you thought was cool was most important. Anyway that’s the rant over. RIP to everyone who died, I hope that 9 yo boy wakes up from his coma.
Ethan interviewed one of the teens who went to the festival on the h3 podcast and the guy sounded messed up hearing him recalling his experience really broke my heat :( I can't imagine going to a concert to have fun only to come out with trauma.
ultimately the organizers did NOT follow through the most simple minded things. No one in the organizing the event attempted to pause until 2 people tried to stop him performing and he shoos them and even the camera guy doesn’t bring the cue people are dying through his earpiece????? This is so easily preventable especially after it was crowding SINCE don toliver the organizers should’ve BEEN on top of it & it did not stop until people died? Like Cody said, you should not die at a concert & Travis’ lack of remorse PLUS the half-assed call to action amongst every employee running & watching out is not fucking normal & should make us all question. How and why are these people working for such an event and not doing their damn job? Got mfs in survival of the fittest at a concert that’s not how it goes.
Just wanted to say that you guys have really helped me through some of the worst days of my life these days. I've been battling with depression and you guys always put a smile on my face no matter what :) keep doing what you do. and thanks for everything!
I personally think some younger people haven't learnt pit etiquette. It's an unwritten rule if someone falls you get them back up and it's worrying how much this isn't happening.
I feel like this has to do with moshing becoming more popular at rap shows/raves. With raves at least there’s a take care of you culture but rap shows are plagued by people doing things selfishly and for clout.
Imo I feel like it’s less of a young vs old thing and more of the community Travis has. Especially considering the fact that he’s encouraged his fans being violent at multiple other events
I think it was less that and more that they were so smashed together people weren't actually capable of helping the person dying on the ground in front of them. Their was so much force smashing them together they couldn't bend down and help someone up.
Even football players who play in front of 50,000+ people can immediately detect if there’s a serious situation and stop the game… Live Nation and Travis need to be held accountable for a tragedy that possibly could’ve been avoided.
The foremost crowd management expert Paul Wertheimer (look up articles where he's interviewed he has amazing insights) who has been studying crowds since The Who concert disaster always points out that crowd crushes are ALWAYS an organizational/planning problem. It's not due to the type of crowd or bad behavior. Crowds do what crowds do. It's organizers job to prepare for them. Crushes are basically just physics. It's pretty much always down to organizers cheaping out on infrastructure, staff, etc.
It also occurred to me that Travis Scott may have trouble hiring the best security contractors since he has a long history of literally inciting riots where security guards were injured, telling fans to rush guards and "there are more of you than them". If I ran a security company I wouldn't risk my team at his events.
I've literally been to death metal concerts that I felt 1000% safe in b/c 1. The had the right amount of staff and 2. No matter how many people were at the shows most aren't dickheads who start shit and fans also help stop that shit fast. The unfortunate events at Astro world was most definitely a result of poor management from that venue. Large crowds like that definitely need more separation and more staff to handle them.
@@GarretRB especially because you know they had it shut down for their private party. So not only did he murder children at his concert, but he also stopped them from going to Dave and Buster's. Grown men literally taking candy and arcade games from children. I can't 😂 it's evil villain ish.
Never thought I'd say this but damn Noel had some poor ass takes on the Astroworld tragedy. Travis is responsible just as much as the organizers are. No debate. I hope he spends the rest of his life behind bars for this.

My friend and I went to Lollapalooza this year, we were going around watching different performances but the one we remember the most is the Polo G one. We got there early and by the time everyone was there we were basically in the middle of the crowd. I’m sort of short but somehow there was a girl who was incredibly small in front of us so I whispered to my friend “if this gets bad we grab her”. This was my first time experiencing such a big performance so I thought we would be fine, however, as soon as the set started we knew we were in trouble. It wasn’t even a minute and we knew we had to get out, and the first person that I heard struggling was that short girl that was in front of us. I told her to grab my hand and we started making our way out. Thankfully we were actually moving and along the way there were two guys who kept protecting us and yelling at people to step back. The poor girl who’s hand I was still holding kept yelling that she couldn’t breath at some points, and I still think about her screams sometimes. It’s such a primal fear, just feeling trapped and crushed- we almost fell a few times and I knew that if we fell to the floor we were gonna be done for unless someone actually helped. We got out and I reflected on it, it wasn’t wise of us to be in the middle of the whole crowd (even though that wasn’t our intention we were trying to get to a rail close to the front) but I thank those people who started making ways for those that wanted to get out. When the night was ending and we arched Tyler there was so much security around keeping tabs on so many parts of the crowd. People were being considerate and trying to help each other out, there were occasional “ragers” but there are so many ways to control stuff like this and my heart aches at the thought of people dying this way, stay safe
I am so grateful to this podcast, this is literally how i find out whats going on in the world, i listen to this and i read news highlights and that basically covers most conversation topics that could come up and i can mansplain to everyone and seem smart and up to date.
i was 13 when I first went into a mosh pit and everyone was courteous. my best friend and i were clearly young, and these guys that probably had 8-10 years on us and had never met were like our bodyguards the whole time. someone tried passing us a blunt and they intercepted and chewed the person out because “they’re kids! are you fucking serious?” granted, it was panic at the disco, but I’ve been to crazier shows since then and the courtesy stayed the same. i think it really depends on the culture the artist fosters
I think Noel’s take on travis being pressured to keep going was very, very, very bad. He had power over the crowd. It’s happened before. I mean with him stopping concerts for a shoe, you can see who he is. I’m just really disappointed in the way you guys talked about this situation. Satanic theories and travis being pressured is all shit and should not be talked about. This isn’t some conspiracy theory, this is people dying because of travis Scott’s shitty mindset and shitty management. I’ve lost some respect for y’all for talking about it in this typa way.
Damn, hearing all of the stuff about the Astroworld concert hit me a little too hard as someone who has been in lots of mosh pits. Mosh pits are not for the faint at heart, and if your not careful you can seriously hurt yourself and others. I've been in situations where I've been crushed against others and had trouble breathing because of the extremely hot and muggy air, but going from "THIS IS THE BEST DAY OF MY LIFE" to "HOLY FUCK THIS IS THE END OF MY LIFE" within the span of a couple seconds is absolutely terrifying to think about. I'm 6'3 and 150 pounds, nobody's safe in that situation. I pray for those who are recovering from that concert.

Dopesick is excellent. It makes me absolutely disgusted learning how corrupt the entire thing is. It's very sad. But this series tells an incredibly important and true story, still destructively unfolding today.
Yo so don’t want to be the nerd y’all made fun of during the podcast but basically think of dune about a planet named Dune or Arrakis that is an extremely dry desert planet with extremely harsh environmental conditions like giant sand worms that devour anything that enters their territory, territorial indigenous warrior-people known as Fremen and sandstorms that are so hazardous they can shred through metal and tear flesh from bones. Why is this planet special? The spice known as melange is unique to this planet. This spice provides geriatric properties(allows you to live a longer life), see into the future(much more complex than that), and vital to the galactic civilization of the story known as the Imperium. So now imagine how valuable this planet becomes when you realize that he who controls the spice controls the fate of the Imperium. That’s what this movie is all about as you follow the character Paul and his house they seize control of the treacherous and priceless source of melange. Great book, go check it out. Props to Noel for recognizing how many similarities lie between the setting of Dune and the real world. Dune was published in 1965 so I don’t believe Frank Herbert based the name directly off of Iraq but I might be wrong.
@@Badmanpuntbaxter Is there any allegorical connection of the books to their involvement with Israel or is it more just about iraq resource exploitation because you'd think that would come through since that was going on at the time of his writing
@@theimpaler98 I'm definitely no expert on the Israel situation, so there may be some parallels, particularly in Dune Messiah wherein some Fremen try to remain in the desert while others agree with the plan of turning Arrakis into an oasis, that COULD be interpreted to be the 2 state solution but it's a bit of a reach, certainly

I work at a mental health clinic close to Houston and have had a few parents call to get therapy for their children after they went to the concert. I totally related to what Noel said about security not giving a shit. I was at Blue Ridge Rock Festival this year in Virginia and the security was terrible. We even saw some of the security guards fist fighting each other and it took some fans to break them up. If you're going to start a festival, make sure you actually plan it and check the people that are watching over you while you're there.

Slipknot was instrumentaly gross as well as his shite lyrics.
yeah metalheads have established pit etiquette, we all know the golden rule of “if someone falls down, you pick em up”
not to dispute you or imply that this kind of camaraderie exists at a travis scott show, but the problem was crowd crush. so there wasn’t enough space to breathe let alone help people up, even if they wanted to.
Spot on, i went to a Ghost concert in Detroit and that shit was PACKED but no one got hurt.
about the astro world thing, i’m a born and raised houstonian and travis scott is knows for insighting violence at his parties and concerts. also the venue is known to be p shitty with security so it’s def on them as well. my sisters childhood friend died at that festival so it hurts us and her family so much when people talk about the festival being “satanic”. it’s serious and real people were hurt and killed.

Travis saw an ambulance trying to get to someone and he kept the show going....how is it not his fault lmao
Exactly, there's multiple angles of him actively looking at the carnage going on and doing nothing about it. It was hard to listen to Noel back him like this..
Noel is just trying be a contrarian as per usual.
I agree. As much as there are crew on the ground to keep an eye out, everyone is there to see him. They'll listen to him over a security guard.
Even worse, my buddy had gone and told me that Travis performed on an ambulance, and then others couldn’t take off because kids were climbing on them
Absolutely right, especially because so many artists have paused shows for medics. Like he could have done something, he had everyone’s attention

Didn’t he leave his manager to die from a seizure before without getting him help? Really gross

Definitely a bad take to say Travis was pressured to keep performing, he’s a multi millionaire that’s been doing shows for years and has stopped shows in the past because he got a shoe stolen then proceeded to get his 2 thousand fans to beat the shit out of a 17 year old🤦♂️

def think noel’s take on some points were def not the best. i think it’s crazy to have any kind of sympathy for a guy who makes an apology video with a black and white filter on.🧍🏽♀️there’s absolutely no excuse for him
Yeah i think noel didnt know much about the situation and was trying to say it wasnt travis' fault, but he literally ignored the mass casualty warning the sheriff gave him and acknowledged people saying to stop the show but still continued, he needs to be more informed when talking stuff like this tbh.
@@sofiabarrios8988 this exactly!! it’s fine to not know much but it’s wrong to just start talking about such a heavy topic when he’s so ill informed. i low key hopes he addresses it in the next episode
I feel like Behind the bastards would do a much more comprehensive job of covering this sort of case than the TMG Podcast
I am enthralled by this comment, off to research now.

The only reason there wasn’t crowd crush there is because she didn’t have enough fans to make that happen. oop
Noel is absolutely right. Management at the end of the day found money the priority over safety when organizing
"raging with us" you can't be a real person
@@BUSSINJUSTIN10M you're embarrassing
Lmfao
still doesn’t give any excuse to travis. as an artist, you have the power to stop the show. there really is no excuse for him.

Anyway that’s the rant over. ultimately the organizers did NOT follow through the most simple minded things.

I personally think some younger people haven't learnt pit etiquette. It's an unwritten rule if someone falls you get them back up and it's worrying how much this isn't happening.
I feel like this has to do with moshing becoming more popular at rap shows/raves. With raves at least there’s a take care of you culture but rap shows are plagued by people doing things selfishly and for clout.
it’s the major difference between the metal community and the like edm or rap community
Imo I feel like it’s less of a young vs old thing and more of the community Travis has. Especially considering the fact that he’s encouraged his fans being violent at multiple other events
Nope pit etiquette is not something they are versed in
I think it was less that and more that they were so smashed together people weren't actually capable of helping the person dying on the ground in front of them.
Seatgeek promo after talking about the Travis concert LMAO 💀
Bezos has nothing to worry about, his girlfriend is too old for Leo's taste.
I’m sad Cody blamed the whole thing on bad vibes. He literally said that maybe concerts should only have good energy

“By the way, I watched it on my phone” I’m dying
I am so grateful to this podcast, this is literally how i find out whats going on in the world, i listen to this and i read news highlights and that basically covers most conversation topics that could come up and i can mansplain to everyone and seem smart and up to date.

i was 13 when I first went into a mosh pit and everyone was courteous. my best friend and i were clearly young, and these guys that probably had 8-10 years on us and had never met were like our bodyguards the whole time. someone tried passing us a blunt and they intercepted and chewed the person out because “they’re kids! are you fucking serious?”
granted, it was panic at the disco, but I’ve been to crazier shows since then and the courtesy stayed the same. i think it really depends on the culture the artist fosters
I think Noel’s take on travis being pressured to keep going was very, very, very bad. He had power over the crowd. It’s happened before. I mean with him stopping concerts for a shoe, you can see who he is.
