I'm here after listening to Angelina Jordan's adaptation "Portrait of a Child" in rehearsal! I hope down the line she sings it somewhere or records it! It is truly remarkable!
This man deserved too be as famous as Michael Jackson, Marvin Gay, Ray Charles… His songs are so good and so powerful it’s crazy. I listened to all of his albums now I think he is my favorite singer. My fav song is « I AM THE COOL » and « THE ROSE »
I’m a jazz lover in my 60th decade and this awesome song is NEW to me. I’m amazed at Angelina Jordan’s artistry and heart. Her choice of songs thrills me. She’s introducing people to artists and songs they may not know about. 👌🏾
I just stumbled upon SJH a few weeks ago, I’ve listed to almost every song on every album , release, single etc. However this right here is the true winner. Such a beautiful “peace” (get it?) , yet I’m still bothered by the fact that he doesn’t get enough for “I Put A Spell On You” a lot of people heard of the song (so many remakes) but no one knows it was SJH.
yes.....this was maybe too much for the age she was in the rehearsal that was posted..... As a side note, of all the reactors who did "spell" from Angelina, I found only one who knew who Sscreamin Jay Hawkins was.
The greatness of this lyric is its synthesis of specificity and universality. It can only come from an oppressed person, but it also speak to the human condition. We all have to paint our portrait, but dare we look it in the eye?
I'm ashamed to say I didn't know this song, or Screamin' Jay Hawkins, until I saw MrLBoyd react to Angelina's version. I did know "I Put A Spell On You"", but I didn't know who had written it. I listen to BB King's Bluesville channel on Sirius quite a bit, so I'm surprised I never heard him on there. I see now I have a new icon that I have to get to know better... it's really embarrassing that a 13 year old girl has a wider musical knowledge than I do at 58, lol!
Don't ever be ashamed of how you find music. I hear a lot of songs on Tok Tok I otherwise would've never heard. It's one of the only good things about the internet :)
Hell yes his cover of changes by black sabbath changed (haha) my perception of how much more amazing a cover could be compared to the original! SJH is a legend aswell! Many do not know he wrote I put a spell on you drunk and recorded a demo then woke up the next day completely forgetting he wrote it he was so blackout. He had to relearn from his recording so he could re-record a better version!
I am painting in oil, a portrait of a man Who has taken all the heart aches, And all the pain he can stand. I am using all the colors of blue, I have here on my stand. I am painting in oil, a portrait of a man. I can tell he is dying. I see death in his eyes. Oh yes I know, I know when he's crying 'Tis my tears, my tears that he cries. I am so tired of how he feels inside, I mix the paint with my hand. I am painting in oil, a portrait of a man. As I paint a wrinkled brow and hair that is turning grey, Oh tell me how, how can I paint a smile And eyes that keep turning away? I am using all the colors of blue I have here on my stand. I am painting in oil, a portrait and I'm the man. A portrait and I am the man.
Lots of people don't even know who Screamin' Jay is I've just learnt to him years ago because of the fact that I am into music and I searched for new music all the time
One of his best. Here's a link to Angelina Jordan jamming on this, with some guys who really know how to play: ruclips.net/video/80f3t3dmBbk/видео.html I think Screamin' Jay would be proud.
Unfortunately, the radio stations and record producers had all the power at that time, and Screamin' Jay's songs were blacklisted from the radio and the billboard charts, because people couldn't deal with how different and weird it was for the time.
I think the thing was that you want to listen to his songs when you are in a very particular mood, and radio stations usually played tunes that were for dancing and stuff
I don't think it was so much that he was blacklisted, as much as he was type-cast in the same way that somebody like Spike Jones was, as a novelty act. Most people didn't want to hear his serious music... I did and still do.
SONG / PORTRET TRUE- BLUE NATURE NATURAL. CLASSIC FOREVEMORE. IN FIRST JUST FOR SONGWRITERS,. AS SONG/ VOISE NATIVE SENSIBILITY PROCESS . OF THE ONE HEART LIFE. AS VISION WITH REALITY. THANK FOR WRITER - IN MEMORY - AND HIS SONGS . FOR IMORTAL SHINE PORTRET OF THE MAN. RUTERENI- IRENA RUTE, Lithuania.
For all you people who are wondering why there is so much mention here in the comments of Angelina Jordan, she is a Norwegian singer who did the best-ever cover of this song, even though she was only 9 years old at the time ruclips.net/video/SAkZDAXJA4E/видео.html
Well, his most famous song “I put a spell on you” is thought by most people to be a Nina Simone song, so it’s understandable that people have been oblivious to “Portrait of a man”, it has nothing to do with the quality of the song.
i was searching for this song for 12 years now, i m glad i found it
and i see this comments 12days ago. welcome to deep

6th decade🙂
@@davidratcliffe1 🤣🤣🤣
When I listened this first time, I burst into tears at the end. It was about 10 years ago. I am over 40 now, nothing changed.
This song is real real deep.
That man is deep, this song was surely too flat a canvas for him. Dear lord! how many tires must have flattened his ache to a pulp
I am one. . .OMG, this man was unique ! Constipation Blues rocked my world ! I lived thru the 60's and 70's but totally missed it.
God damn what a song.
Screaming Jay is the uncrowned king of the macabre, the only one who could unite Goth and Soul.
💀
This man, this voice, nice

Any other Angelina Jordan fans who stumbled onto this? The soul lives on.

Yes, I'm here.
Yes.
Rockin Wolf's back stories are usually spot on.
@@dhamma58 ....Modern Retro Show did a side by side reaction of ANGELINA and Screamin Jay...and other songs too
Fantastic song from a great man.
This was beautiful. I think if she was still here, Amy Winehouse would’ve done a great job of this song.
Agreed
What an artist .i am also a big angie fan❤
Unbelievably emotional, absolutely beautiful
what an absolute banger of a tune
this song is beyond fantastic
This almost brought me to tears
This song totally brought me to tears. Especially when I first found it. Oh my God. I balled
Simply genius...

Amazing song. Marlon Williams' cover of this is phenomenal as well.
That is why I came here to listen to the original. So many emotions- in this song and when Marlon sings it as well....
In America in June 2020, this song is an anthem. Amazing to come across it now.
I believe that goes for the hole world, even more so now in 2021.
I love this song. Thank you
She embodies everyone.
WOW just WOW!!!

In fairness to you: Everyone has egg on their face, if compared to that particular 13 (now 15) year old girl.
Don't ever be ashamed of how you find music. I hear a lot of songs on Tok Tok I otherwise would've never heard. It's one of the only good things about the internet :)
I would have loved to see Charles Bradley cover this song. Such an amazing and emotional song I'm sure he would have done this song justice.

Absolute 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Damn. This is the song right here.
Our princess Angelina Jordan has amazing taste in music. I would also love to hear her sing this now that’s she’s a bit older.
Oh, YEH!!!! Probably around 30.
I am painting in oil, a portrait of a man
Who has taken all the heart aches,
And all the pain he can stand.
I am using all the colors of blue,
I have here on my stand.
I am painting in oil, a portrait of a man.

A portrait and I am the man.
Thank you.
Wow! Grateful to have the lyrics. Thank you.
Wow !
Thank you.
Pressed the "Like" button 100 times, but only one extra "Like" showed up!
Doom metal precursor... Something dark, and beautiful about this.
Lots of people don't even know who Screamin' Jay is I've just learnt to him years ago because of the fact that I am into music and I searched for new music all the time
Samuel White did anybody ask though?
Powerful.
All of you taking about this Angelina lady introducing you, don't realise that you first heard his work with 'I Put a Spell on You'.
my favourite
I'm here because of Angelina Jordon...June 2, 2022.
Meeeee Meeeee Meeeee
ANGELINA JORDAN SUPERFAN
Emotion....wow

Awesome. GREAT AND WONDERFUL. I LIKE IT. REALLY DO
Yes, another one.

J. Darkhearst. The best things are not well known, don't you like it?

Haunting
WOW!
Fuckin' Great
I don't know who Angelina Jordan is, and no she did not bring me hear, im just a screamin' Jay Hawkins fan.
Please check her out. The title was changed to Portrait of a child. She also sang I put a spell on you by SJH.

Smoooooooooth.
Foos gone wild brought me here!
İts a good
the guitar is sweeter than a diabetic's pee.
Portrait Of A Man............
Dammit, I fkn love acid
It's a shame the over-the-top image Screamin" Jay was forced into prevented us from hearing most of his great performances.
I'm here cuz of @foosgonewild 🙂
Big mama torson
based on a foo story
I guess the sing isn't as good as we all think? How else can you explain why this song only has 1000 upvotes in 10 years?
Well, his most famous song “I put a spell on you” is thought by most people to be a Nina Simone song, so it’s understandable that people have been oblivious to “Portrait of a man”, it has nothing to do with the quality of the song.
Looks like you need a history lesson.
Somebody should make a Joker edit to this song
Ethier the devil or god brought me to this but I’ll tell you what this brings a joyful death to my bones
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
