Tony is the one who persuaded the other guys to make this video, their very first "theatric" style video. Until then they had just done simple videos. It really set them apart from the other groups and they embraced their inner theater kids after this. Tony and Layne now run Pattycake together.

A lot of their pre-Sing-Off stuff is theatrical in a completely different way. See Road Trip, Auditions, Chicken Song.
But that didn't do them any good on the show, because they couldn't work out how to turn it into the 3-4 minute pop songs that the show runners wanted. This (what they did with Phantom, and the kind of stuff they do now) is how, but they didn't figure it out until after the show had run its course. Just imagine, what the judges would have done if, when the show's category was "movie song", instead of the completely forgettable thing they did, they'd whipped out Poor Unfortunate Souls with Geoff as Ursula, or This is Halloween with all those character voices and everything. Even without the make-up and costuming and effects in post and such, it still would've set them apart from the crowd in a much more dramatic way.

Hey Huldra, how about a video on their history with Rachel?

Tony is the Phantom, and I've never seen him with long hair 😉
Rachel's first collab with VP was I Knew You Were Trouble / As Long As You Love Me, back in 2013; they became good friends at that time, and she sure fits perfect with them. A little later, when the guys signed up for the Sing-Off, they were told to add a female voice. They tried for Rachel, but her schedule didn't allow it.
She has a busy life, with family and work, but every now and then VP asks her for another video, and she joins whenever possible. 🔥

Thanks for your reaction! Yes, the Phantom here is Tony Wakim, former baritone singer and co-owner of PattyCake Productions with Layne Stein. Tony is still very much a part of Voice Play even though he stepped down as their baritone singer (I think of him as the silent, unrecognized member) as he did not like the demands of touring and singing and wanted to focus more on the production and day to day operation of PattyCake Productions. Tony also designs and makes a lot of the costumes including Rachel Potter's dress here ( I wish we saw Tony more as a featured guest). Rachel has been a friend with some of the Voice Play members since high school and they also worked the theme parks in Orlando together while they attended college. Voice Play had auditioned for the first season of 'Sing Off' back in 2009 and were turned down and told that the casting crew was looking for a fresh, new style to acapella that was not too traditional choir, barbershop quartet, or boy band and they really needed to think about including a female singer in their group. Home Free auditioned for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd season of the 'Sing Off' and were turned down all three times and told the same about including a female in their group. As you know, Pentatonix won the third season of 'Sing Off' back in 2011 and the promised recording contract that was part of the grand prize dropped Pentatonix after the first week telling them acapella was just a novelty that would never sell records. The 'Sing Off' was canceled when that happen so there was no forth season in 2012. The 'Sing Off' was given a bit of a reprise for a forth season in 2013 as a holiday special with less episodes, different format, and a tour afterward to promote interest and support of acapella music instead of a promised recording contract. Voice Play had posted their "I Knew You Were Trouble/As Long As You Love Me" on their page with Rachel Potter in 2013 and the casting crew of 'Sing Off' saw it, loved it and called Voice Play back and ask them to audition with Rachel Potter. Home Free had some member changes, had picked up both Tim and Austin and were touring doing a lot of Country music but were also called and asked to audition for season 4 as a country group. Even though Home Free had no female singer they sounded very good as a Country group (Country music has a huge fan base that watch these singing competition TV shows and season 4 of the 'Sing Off' was more of a mission to promote interest in acapella music and save the show). Rachel Potter was unable to join Voice Play for the 'Sing Off' because she was competing on 'X-Factor' at the time and the schedule conflicted so Voice Play had Honey Rochelle as a last minute temporary replacement. Although the 'Sing Off' was not renewed after that 4th season, it really is wonderful to see that these acapella groups have all continued to support each other, become very successful and grown such a huge fan base on the internet over the years since the 'Sing Off'. The way I see it, their mission was accomplished and everybody won.

When Tony says it's a departure for them, I think it's partly because this was the first time they really went full out on a video. Before that, most of the songs were done in the sit (or stand) and sing into microphone style. There were a couple that were more involved (they'd done Cheerleader and Once Upon a Dream by that point), but it was one of the first that involved a lot of costuming and setting the scene. Stuff that we're so used to from them these days was new 7 years ago.

Agree on Layne being a weapon, but PattyCake is just as much Tony's creativity as well.
They all worked together at Disney. Rachel and the guys.😄

Enjoyed the reaction! Patreons of PattyCake still get to hear Tony sing every so often, love it! If only he'd come back as a feature and join them in a song. I can hope!

Speaking of another level--their next drop will require you to install seatbelts on your chair. I thought Valhalla would stay at the top for a while as my favorite, but this next one? Hooooo boy! I really miss Tony singing with them. He's Layne's partner at PattyCake and his behind the scenes work is top notch, but his voice is amazing too. Rachel was originally going to be with them on the Sing Off, but she got a place singing on The Voice, and made the finals. She also worked with them at Disney and she sang Ariel's Little Mermaid parts almost every day.

They met Rachel when they all worked at Disney World many years ago.
She now lives up north with hubby and 2½ little ones.
She sings with them when she can but its getting harder for her.

You were right the first time. It is Tony Wakim who co-owns PattyCake with Layne. The swirl of the cape came pretty naturally to him. He played Dracula for several years in Universal’s Beatle juice is rock and roll graveyard review. (Geoff and Kathy played the Frankenstein monster and his bride but I don’t know if it was at the same time.)

My opinion, that Rachel was friends before Voiceplay was famous, but the idea I got was they all are part of Disney theater culture ! And Voiceplay being staged right down the road from Disney World and Epcot center in Orlando Florida - ❤❤❤

They actually asked her to be a part of VoicePlay but she moved on up to Nashville I believe where she has a child, family, and she's happy. It's nice when we get to see her. Enormously talented.

This video was one of the first few full production videos that they weren't just doing their thing sitting on stools. A lot of their early post Sing Off videos were a capella top 10 listss of an assortment of musical themes and genres. I think besides Phantom, one of VoicePlay 's first full production videos was Cheerleader.. but I may be wrong.

Good thing I saw this one a few years ago. I know they have been through lineup changes since then, I was there for some of it. But between current day and Phantom, Geoff is almost un-recognizable. The short haircut throws me off, just so used to seeing him with collar-length hair. lol Obviously his voice is easily recognizable.
