Instead, he commandeered S.S Anne and rammed it into the docks.

The realistic part would probably be that there is no Pokeball with a 100% success chance...
I mean, it has been shown in the games that there are ways to nullify all Pokéballs, so why shouldn't some Pokémon have that as innate ability?
true in the older games pokeballs would miss especially a master ball, but a master ball is the only ball with a 100% catch rate and that snorlax was in the master ball

yeah, plus one of the Pokemon movie, I choose you, is talking about the Gen 1 with adding 1 legendary (for detail, you can google search). At the almost end of the movie, Ash's Pikachu did get inside of the Pokeball.

If I remember, Masterball has like a 0.0000001% chance of failure or something like that.
