You should definitely listen to the rest of her stuff in chronological order, either reverse continuing with be the cowboy or from the beginning with lush. Lyrically, she’s played with a lot of similar themes over her career so I think if you like her writing style you’ll like them as well. But production-wise, you can definitely see her style change throughout her career. This one is by far the most synthy but they’re all pretty short and very good!!
After listening other releases, I find, that she doesn't fully realize her singing potential on Laurel Hell, but the extraordinary diversity and inventiveness of the music makes up for it. Even if not every song is completely rousing and a lot of song are maybe a bit short, Laurel Hell is an album that you can listen to over and over again without getting bored. It’s really remarkable.
a rly interesting thing abt mitski's music is that a lot of her music isn't about people and love but rather her relationship with music and her career as a whole
i was not expecting this at all but i am SO HYPED. this album is pretty different to her other stuff, though she’s never had a set genre. her lyrics are the main focal point in her music (for me at least) so if you like her lyrics in this album i would absolutely love if you reacted to the rest of her stuff :)
the end of the working for the knife music video is kind of a representation of her career and the music industry, she's still happily dancing on stage even if there isn't anybody left in the audience
okay but not every mitski song is sad either. usually it's kind of ambiguous, or open to interpretation. like for example, if you think "me and my husband" is a song about loneliness then it is one. if it's about being in an abusive relationship it is one. if you think it's about genuinely being happy in a relationship then it is.
@@wpbn5613 Absolutely agree! I think My Body's Made of Crushed Little Stars is just a happy and freeing song of her expressing her true emotions and Strawberry Blonde is just pure dopamine. But mabye that's just me being weird and it's just a mental breakdown song and a song about her expresing jealousy. So many ways to see these songs!
@@arnoldspirags9995 strawberry blonde is really happy until you look into the actual deeper meaning of it. that’s why the commenter said that if you think it’s happy, if probably isn’t lol
She always seems to have hits on every album, but then also many tracks that are not very playable casually. She’s very experimental in my opinion but mostly in her old music.
"I Guess" is a little insight into her albums story. She has been making music for so long and while she lives for it, it's also wrecking her. She's said in many interviews that she's getting burnt out on being famous. I think her music and gut wrenching emotion has resonated so deeply with her fans that people have been putting her on a pedestal and pigeonholing her into "sad girl music." She shared that she was going to quit music in 2019 but she had one more record on her contract. This album seems to be a reflection of her music career and its demands of her. It's a goodbye to celebrity and a hello to her authenticity. I'm so happy and excited for her but also so heartbroken. I'm grateful to see artists open up about the truth of having to produce for capitalism and how that affects creativity and choosing to prioritize their well being and happiness.
a lot of her prior work varies in sound from more orchestral/piano projects like "Lush" and "Retired from Sad, New Career in Business" to indie rock infused projects like "Bury Me at Makeout Creek" and "Puberty 2". she infuses both of those sounds together on the album prior to laurel hell titled "Be The Cowboy" which was her breakout project :)
ahh you should’ve listened to one of her previous albums for your first listen, this one is pretty different and i personally think Puberty 2 is her best!
you should definitely check out her other work! her older stuff definitely isn’t for everyone, but you would definitely enjoy “bury me at makeout creak” and “be the cowboy”.
some of her other stuff i have a feeling you won't like because it has some really heavy sounds/the kind of instrumentals that make you anxious. but her lyrics are always jaw dropping. a lot of her lyrics touch on what it's like to be diaspora asian-american
Please take a deep dive into her discography, you'll gonna love her experiments and chaotic energy. I also recommend Lucy Dacus' raw storytelling. Make sure to check out her discography later.
just so you can decide which album you’d rather go next these are kinda the genres: lush - pretty experimental, piano ballads and one rock song retired from sad - mostly orchestra and piano, one of my faves bury me at makeout creek - indie rock, really good melodies and punky puberty 2 - still punky and rock but with more synth and pop be the cowboy - synthpop with rock influences mostly
i promise you her music is so worth it, even if you don’t feel one of her songs give it a second try you’re bound to resonate with at least one of them
I think the intro to the Working for the Knife music video is a reference to her previous album, Be the Cowboy: Since this was the lead single, her taking off the cowboy hat is symbolizing the end of the previous era
I’ve discovered Weyes blood recently and I think you would love her. She’s incredibly talented and her vocals are insane. I deeply recommend Titanic Rising!!
when you listen to I Bet On Losing Dogs on Puberty 2 you're literally gonna shatter. it's one of my favorite songs and it's one of the most painful songs i've ever heard
Mitski has an 80s Synth pop production on this album, which she doesn't have on most other songs. She chose a different path because it's her last album that she'll ever make. Love her sm
Her haitus was her quitting music - she's verbalized it all in that rs interview. This is her after her last show in NYC: “It was beautiful,” Mitski says. “I performed, and I remembered how much I loved it. And I remember walking offstage, and I immediately started crying. Like, ‘What have I done?’ ” Lucy Dacus, who opened for Mitski that night, remembers that Mitski seemed muted as she left the stage. “I asked her, ‘How do you feel?’ ” Dacus says. “The first thing she said was, ‘Oh, I’ve made a huge mistake.’ She verbalized it, and I felt a shade of terror for her.” Essentially, Mitski is back for the forseeable future.
@@dij_on_ i would really love for this to be true, but i saw another comment about how her contract for her producing company or whatever needed one more album from her. so i think this might be it, even tho i absolutely hate the thought of that
@@graysonhubbard3979 i dont think this will be her last album! mitski has said multiple times how much she loves music, but she went on hiatus after “be the cowboy” because she felt as if she was making music for the sake of the industry, and music that she didn’t care about. she planned on quitting music, but ended up coming back with her new album, so i doubt that she would come back because of the record label/music industry considering that was the reason she quit in the first place ^^’ perhaps it’s wishful thinking, but i hope that mitski will continue to make her music for herself :)
I'm glad you loved this album. Mitski is such a unique artist. Such short but emotive songs and really interesting production throughout her whole career.
I guess is my personal favorite song. the first time i listened to it it didn't really hit me, but on my second listen the lyirc "it's been you and me since before i was me, without you i don't know quite how to live" REALLY fell into place. as someone who lost a parent, i connected so hard to those lyrics and then when i listened to the song through that lens it BROKE me
