The Aztecs worshiped Tōnatiuh, the sun god, linked to the sacrifice of Nanahuatzin, who threw himself into the sacred fire to become the fifth sun after the destruction of previous eras. The sun symbolized the daily struggle between light and darkness, renewed through human sacrifices to sustain its energy. Sacrifices at temples like the Templo Mayor represented honoring the gods and maintaining cosmic order.
